The Great Coffee Raid

Isak steps into the cabin, skiis pressed against his chest with his left arm, and a bit of snow on his cap. Damn trees with their low branches and all. He rests the skiis against the wall, careful to not let them hit his mittened hand before turning about to look for the stove. There was coffee, right? Right?

Not a drop of coffee to be found, But the young maid Saimi sat diligently cleaning a rifle she hasn't even fired yet. Her leg bounces as she hums to herself. Looking up at Isak comes in, smiling wide. "Isak!" she says, "How is my sister?" She wonders.

"No coffee," Niko says, clearing his throat. He sits on the floor, leaned up against the wall. "According to Jari, we haven't found a fresh supply." He stands up. "Not that it would be worth the danger to procure it, anyway," he adds.

"Still at home… or she better be, and not taking after her sister." Isak chides Saimi with a bit of a grin. To Niko, he simply shrugs. "Give Jari time, his mind might be changed." He paused for just a moment before adding, "We will need to go into a village soon to provide basic things soon… like clothing."

Saimi blushes a little, cleaning the gun harder now. "Now, Isak, I helped you a lot the other day!" she states, nodding sagely as she frowns a little. "Didn't I?" she asks, giving a little sigh. She wants to help a lot. "Anyways, not everyone can fight for Finland, but I can- so I will."

Niko walks over to the stove and says. "No coffee, but there's… water," he mutters. "You should have gone mine-clearing yesterday," he tells Isak. "Looks like Pyyvaara might be out of the question for the next raid."

Topi has been asleep over in one of the corners, but just woke up, it would seem. "Didn't look too strongly defended when I looked in there," he offers. "Aside from that armored car and the machine gun, but if we hit them from more than one side, that should be possible…"

Saimi blinks quietly. "When do we go out next?" she wondered outloud, as she finishes cleaning that rifle and checks it all- then leans it to the side- scooting closer to the fire to be warmer. She's got a little smile on her face- warmth.

"If we have to hit them at all," Isak offers. "Stealth is the goal here, I would think." When Saimi blushes he makes a show of snorting in disapproval. "None of that, if I thought you weren't holding up out here, Saimi, I'd tell you." He paused a moment and added quietly, "I just would not be right in the head with -her- here, is all." Quickly he shook free the horrific images alluded to and changed subjects in a blink. "The mines were that thick out there, or did we just not find anything?"

Niko nods to Topi. "Hopefully Sergeant gives us some more 20mm the next time he comes around just in case we receive future orders to attack Pyyvaara. If the sergeant hasn't been killed already, that is." Niko pours himself some once-boiled water and sips it, grimacing. "Can't exactly run up and throw a molotov at the armored car with that Russian machine gun providing cover. Unless we can muster enough men to effectively flank 'em… it can probably be done." He shrugs and walks over to the window to stare out.

Topi shrugs, "If we'd have enough people to attack from both north, south, east and west," he offers, before he grins at Isak. "It was only one mine around the town. And that reminds me…" He looks over at Niko again, "You still claim we owe you one?"

Antti has arrived.
Antti arrives from the East.

Saimi blinks a little, listening quietly with a smile as she grins up to Isak. "Yeah. But its good she's back at home. Someone needs to be." she says, nodding. "How are you today?" she wonders as she stands to come and hug her Brother in Law, smiling up at him. "She's well, yes?" she wonders.

"No," Niko says quietly. "That was an attempt at humor last night." The small man didn't exactly look jolly then, but he at least looks more relaxed now.

Antti skiis in from the south, rifle slung across his back, taking no care to conceal his tracks so close to the cabin. As a result, the elder of the Mannikainen brothers is moving at a good speed, breath misting the air before him as he draws near.

Topi grins as he hears that, "Well, so was my offer. We have one cleared mine from yesterday, you know…"

Isak looks at Niko for a long moment, as if confused, before finally just shaking his head in bewilderment. The hug from Saimi is breifly, wrapping his good arm around her for just long enough before taking a step back. " And if only the youngest of the Mannikainen siblings was aware the Eldest was around- she'd be going out on patrol. She'd, somehow, managed to hide herself from her brother. He might know she's around- but he's not actually seen her yet. Saimi, is however, lazing by the fire with a smile as she sits down across from Isak, with a cattish yawn.

"She's doing fine, I hope, still at home." Home was Linna, and Isak hadn't seen his wife since coming out to this little cabin in defense of country. "I'm doing fine, all things considered. You seem to be in good spirits."

Isnt that funny? Isak, the fellow Antti had taught on the Solothurn, happened to be sharing a brief, comradely hug with someone who bore a passing resemblance to his little sister. Pausing a long moment at the sight, Antti's eyes narrow, and his brow knits as he sees that the girl is, in fact, Saimi. Why in HELL was Isak all over his sister in such an improper manner?? Arms crossing over his chest, Antti mutters, "Hmm. You look comfortable, Saimi."

Saimi's body goes suddenly rigid- as she realizes she hasn't been able to escape Antti. Swallowing a bit, she turns to look at Antti. "Um. I… Antti." she stutters out. "I just… was.. We were in battle the other day together, and I was asking about our Sister…and..and." She continues, trying, "I was out of school, so I came home, and I wanted to fight for Finland like you and Matti! I did real good, really! I was out and getting shot at and everything."

Niko glances over at Antti. He unslings his rifle and walks over to where Topi is, sitting down a short distance from the man. He's clearly ignoring the family hijinks playing out before him. "At least we now know you and Vesa know what you're doing," he comments.

Topi looks over at the others, a bit thoughtfully. "Nothing like a nice family reunion, is it?" he offers with a bit of a grin as he realizes what was happening. He then nods a little at Niko. "It's a useful skill to know," he offers with a grin.

Isak didn't take a step back, but he did turn his gaze onto Antti. "I meant no offense, Antti. I just haven't seen my sister-in-law in some time." No blush, no embarassment… just a quick, stoic response.

"You were out getting shot at," Antti echoes flatly. A slowly drawn breath, before Saimi's brother mutters, "Sister, come outside. We two can talk." Perhaps oiminously, he says nothing further to Saimi just yet, simply looking to Isak at the other's words and nodding once.

Saimi would normally yell and scream and talk about how she could fight as good as anyone- but.. Antti's the closest thing she's got to a Father. Nodding she picks up and shoulders her rifle- with two notches on it- and walks out quietly. "Yes, Antti. If you want." she whispers, looking at her feet as she crosses her arms a bit. She doesn't want to be embaressed in front of the men anyways.

Niko glances over at Topi and shrugs. "Nothing like family drama, eh?" The small man pulls the bolt back on his rifle and out, examining it. "Anything to break up the monotony. Can't say I really care."

Topi chuckles, as he hears that, nodding a little bit. "I guess something like that would be happening if I met any of my family here…"

Isak mutters a quick 'Good Luck' Saimi's way before she was dragged out to tribunal, and instead finds his way to a chair near the open stove that heats the main room. His gaze turns toward Niko and Topi in the corner and he happens to catch a bit of their conversation before he grins a bit. "Oh, it could be worse," he says to the pair.

Antti turns arouns and steps outside the cabin, walking around one corner to stand along the wall that is in the lee of the wind, turning back around then to fix a 'look' on his little sister. "You're carrying a rifle," he observes plainly. "How long have you been doing that?"

Saimi follows the entire time, looking at her feet quietly. "Since I got out of school." she whispers. "About two weeks ago." she continues, "I know how to use it! Matti taught me to shoot a long time ago!" she says, nodding sagely. "I belong out here the same as any other person!" she says, frowning deeply. "I…Aren't you glad to see me?" she ventures.

Topi chuckles a bit as he hears Isak's words, "I'll take your word for it," he offers, with a shrug. Then drawing his knife and inspecting the blade rather carefully for a few moments.

Niko smirks. "Nothing like the Mannikainens to quarrel among themselves. Maybe Erkki and Arto can get into another brawl. And then the Korhonens." He closes the bolt of his rifle and engages the safety.

Isak just shakes his head quickly. "I think Erkki doesn't need family to get into brawls with."

Antti mutters back to his sister without pause, "Many days I have wanted to see you. To see Amanda, and Aila, and my little ones. But on none of those days did I ever want to see you, and be greeted with the words that russians have been shooting at you." Lips press into a tight line for a moment before he adds, "If you belonged here, why were you hiding from me, Saimi? You know this isnt right."

"He'd probably manage to get into a brawl with a tree or a rock," Topi offers, sounding a little amused.

"Because you…you never let me do anything fun!" Saimi states, whimpering a little. "I want to see Amanda and Aila and everyone too- but I want to make sure they've got a home forever. The Russians are coming, Antti and I can't stand by and let them hurt my family and friends! MY home?! I just want to be with my brothers." he says, frowning again as her eyes open wide. "I just.. I didn't want you to do this to me! I already killed two of them, isn't that enough?!"

"You think this is fun?" Antti levels back, displeased. "You know as well as I do, that the only reason we fight is that there are people and things in this world that must survive. You are one of those people. Of all the things you will do in this world, I will *not* permit dying to Ivan's lucky shot to be one of them. What if you are wounded, and Ivan catches you. what do you think that would do to Matti?" He avoids bringing up what it would do to him. "And no. Killing two is not enough."

Isak turns back to the fire then, watching it for a few long moments before he speaks loudly enough to indicate he was speaking with Topi nearby. "You have any family in the reserves?"

Flinches a little as her brother speaks to her again. "I.." she says, not able to manage more. "But.. I haven't been shot or injured! I can help! I can help, Antti!" she whispers harshly. She doesn't want to think about what Ivan would do to her. "T..they'd probably.. " she shudders- she can't imagine what those men would do to her. Horrible things. "I only went out once. A..and if I keep killing two each time I go out, It'll be okay. And.. And.." she struggles to find words. "And I know what I'm doing! I'm not a little girl anymore!"

Topi shakes his head, "No. I suspect that if the enemy has reached the area back home, my family will have gone across the river, into Sweden." He shrugs a little, glancing towards the door for a few moments.

"No brothers… or sisters?" Isak adds after a moment, considering the ugliness more than likely occuring outside.

"Saimi," Antti voices, the hard edge of displeasure fading from his tone as he uncrosses his arms and takes his sister's face between both calloused hands, eyes holding hers. "I know you dont want to think about the horrible things that could happen.. I know you want to help. I know you are'nt stupid, but just for a moment, use all those brains.. Every risk that is taken, you have to consider 'what if it fails'. What if you step on a landmine, or a russian machine gun fires blind and just happens to hit you. What if a bomb shell falls next to you.. It all sounds unlikely, but all these things have happened, Saimi. To soliders. To men who are very, very good at what we do. You can't ask me to watch my little Saimi bloodied and broken.. You are the reason we are fighting.. you are the face of the people we want to keep safe. do not take that away from me, little sister."

Topi shrugs, "Well, I have two brothers, one who works the lumber camps back in the north, and a sister who lives down in the south," he replies. "I don't think any of them are in the reserves, though."

Those eyes- the ones everyone in the family has well up with tears as Antti takes Saimi's face like that. She whimpers, trying very hard to be a strong girl- her fiery hair moves over her face as she pulls away. "I won't die. I won't! I'll fight and do well." she says, giving a smile to her Brother. "You love me, yes." she whispers. "But. Still… I need to fight. How can you expect me not to- what would it do to /me/? Antti… If I don't help you and Matti.. If I'm not with you. It'll kill me inside. I can't just sit! You know I can't." she whispers. "And I'm not going back to Helsinki. Or school." she says, nodding.

Isak nods once, quick, and adds. "Lucky man, it seems." As if Luck is something that could be ascribed to any of them, all things considered.

"You say all that as if it's your choice, whether to die or not," Antti mutters in return, drawing his hands back once Saimi pulls away. "Maybe once Ivan is gone, you'll go back to school. Until then.." He frowns again, intent stare not slipping from Saimi's. "I dont want you fighting, little sister. But for all those brains, you are too stubborn.. If I sent you away, you'd just try and fight without us. So I'll consider it. *Consider*," he emphasizes again, sternly. "And whatever I decide, you will abide, Saimi. Agreed?"

Topi shrugs a little, "Well, one's got to have a little luck, at least," he offers.

Saimi's got a look on her face as she looks again at her Brother. "But I'm..I'm helpful out on the battle field." she whispers. Giving a sigh she nods quietly. "Alright. But… I need to go and help you, so you can be sure!" she says, nodding quietly as she hugs Antti close- holding him tight. "I missed you." she whispers, nuzzling a bit.

Antti puts an arm around his sister's shoulders squeezing as he mutters under his breath, "And I missed you too, you hard-headed little thing." A moment passes quietly, before Antti queries, in a tone of deadpan jest, "So, when are you getting married?"

Isak gets up and moves over toward a pitcher further away, pouring himself some water as Topi speaks. He could not help but dip his head in a nod of acknowledgement to the man's wisdom, and raise the flask of water in a toast. "To luck… may we all be blessed with it."

Topi nods, and lifts his own water bottle. "To luck," he agrees. Then he waits a little, glancing around for a few moments, before he asks, "You're one of the local people, then?"

Isak shrugs once, tipping his head toward the west, whereever that might be. "From Linna, not too far from here. You?"

Saimi sticks her tongue out at Antti. "Maybe when Matti gets married." she says, nodding sagely as she gives a little giggle. That'll be forever from now. So good. "Anyways. Who would want to make an honest woman out of little ole me." she giggles again as she begins to turn from her Brother. "You should have seen me, when I went out! I shot them both, right in a row- through their shriveled Russian hearts."

"You'd *better* be an honest woman," Antti mutters back, with a sniff, before adding, "Back inside." To her reports of how she shot the two russians dead, he says little, save to offer aside, "And if I saw you, I wouldnt have let you go out, so maybe you ought not say 'You should have seen me'."

Topi shrugs, gesturing in the direction of the northwest. "From up in Lapland, near the Swedish border. Although I haven't been there for many months, before the war started."

Saimi frowns. "I'm useful out there. I helped with loading the machine gun and the anti-take rifle." she says, nodding as she frowns to Antti- Though again she smiles brightly to him and takes his hand to pull him inside towards the Cabin. "Come on then! Lets get in out of the cold."

"Good," Antti returns as he once again stomps the worst of the snow off his boots before opening the door and stepping inside, "Then you can help me with the tank gun, and I can keep a close eye on you."

Isak frowns at that and nods quickly to Topi. "I… know how that can feel. I have not been this long from my family. I am not used to it."

Saimi nods quietly. "Alright. I'll help then." She says, nodding sagely. "But I'm bringing my rifle." she says, nodding. "Just to be safe." she whispers to herself. "I got you a gift… While I was at school." she says as she looks up at her Brother. "I thought you'd like a picture." she says, giving a wide smile. "ITs in my bag."

"Usually, that's not my problem," Topi offers, a bit thoughtfully. "But after the war started, with no news…" He sighs a little looking at the people arriving again, "All good friends again, then?" he asks.

"Fine," Antti mutters to the notion of his sister keeping her rifle. A small sniff and faint smile at her news, "Go on then, and then get it," as she notes the location of this picture.

Saimi grins wide. "You better appreciate it. It wasn't easy to get." she says, as she walked over to her bag- and opened it up, pulling out the carefully wrapped frame. Its just a little larger then a pocket as she brings it over and offers it up to her Brother with a smile. "Open it!" she says, smiling wide. The frame looks antique- perhaps she picked it up in a shop somewhere. The glass thick, but the picture inside is new. One could hardly recognize it as Saimi- but its here, dressed like a princess almost.

Isak decides to let the matter drop… as that's a dark place he wishes to avoid. He gathered from the bits and pieces of the conversation that the man Antti was apparently one of Amanda's older brothers… strange that he could not place the man's face. Regardless, he turned away quietly as Antti was presented with the present, apparently intent on giving the pair a bit of privacy… what little could be afforded in this place.

Antti takes the parcel in his thick fingered hands, opening the aged silver frame, and looking at the picture within. His grim face warms ever so slightly with a small smile, as Saimi's brother notes evenly, "I like it very much, little sister. Thank you."

Topi shrugs a little as he listens to the others, taking another sip from his water, and looking rather lost in thought. (repose)

Saimi gives a smile. "I though you'd like it. See! I can be a pretty girl if I want." Saimi just grins as she smiles. "When do we go out next?" she wonders, of her older brother- just spending as much time near him as she can. She smiles over to Isak, winking to him. Brother In Laws are loved too. Just- she hasn't seen her Eldest brother in a while.

Isak hears word of 'going out' and turns just in time to catch Saimi's wink. He smirks, rolling his eyes again… far too eager, but at least it was for a good cause. He's not about to add fuel to her fire and suggest a location though. Instead he simply asks, "What have the regs done recently?"

Antti answers Isak first, with the words, "If we've had word this week, I hav'nt heard it. Topi, and the carpenter cleared out the mines around Pyyvaara, and Ivan parked a tin car there.. If we could magane a couple rifles, maybe take the sled down, and see what we can manage?"

"Some people are too eager for their own good," Topi mutters to himself, shaking his head a little bit.

Antti closes the picture Saimi gave him, and quietly tucks it into one of his coat pockets.

Saimi quietly leans back and gets some hot water for herself and Antti, offering some up to him. "We'll have to steel some tea." she says. nodding quietly.

"And Coffee" Isak offers, then adds, "And clothes, boots… there are a lot of just normal supplies we need."

Saimi nods quietly. "What did I say the other day. We should be taking the clothes from the Russians we shoot!" she sighs quietly. "IF only to use their shirts as wrapping for wounds. And we can't deny ourselves coats like those. Can we?"

Antti sniffs once, "Ivan freezes to death. I dont think his coats will help us much," before shrugging and noting, "I'll get the sled ready. Everyone make sure you have bullets.."

Isak shakes his head. "In the heat of combat, one might mistake one of us for them in the woods. It is too dangerous." Then to Antti, "Taking care of the Soluthurn?"

Antti nods. "I'll carry it this time. Have to keep my lead after your work on the road. Even if you did spend too many bullets doing it.."

Saimi nods quietly. "I can drive, if you like…" she says. "Do you want me to help?" she wonders, looking at Antti as she hurries to be a good Sister!

Isak lifted himself to his feet, and watched as Topi moved toward the sled and Saimi offered to drive. He glanced down at his mittened hand and back up at Antti, "I can get in and get out, or at least try to. Spent a bit of time in the woods, stalking game."

Antti nods to Saimi. "You drive. It'll save me a bit of time. Go now, get the horse hitched and ready."

Saimi nods. She hurries out- the only one who Saimi would never disobey. She grabs all her things, including her rifle and goes to get the horse ready.

«Ground Vehicles» Antti gets into Sled.

Isak shoulders his rifle and moves out of the cabin, moving up next to the sled. "I'll go on ahead."

Erkki watches the others prepare with a dour look, hobbling to the door so he can look out. "You taking Satan?" he says, referring to the horse which he's aptly named such.

«Ground Vehicles» Antti looks back toward Erkki, and calls back, "I'm not pulling the sled myself. Why you ask?"

Isak heard Erkki and moved over toward the horse, running his hand up and down the bridge of its nose (which I'm sure has a more technical name, but I don't know it). "Of course we're taking Satan, he's such a sweet animal." Then yanked his hand away when the beast nipped at him. That got a snicker from him, and he moved to retrieve his skiis.

The horse seems to be very calm and nice today, as if to spite Erkki - at least until Isak too seems to want to prove it and gets a nip for his efforts. Erkki seems to have grown fond of the beast though, despite it's very irratic and sometimes spiteful behaviour towards most humans. "Nothing. But if you're doing some raiding, see if you can grab a sack of oatmeal for him."

«Ground Vehicles» Saimi shakes her head, walking up to the horse and just whispering to him as she ties him up to the sled- getting him all happy. She pets the end of his nose and whispers to him while she pulls his head to hers- just resting a forehead. The Devil-stallion is oddly docile towards Saimi. She must be Hell's Herd Mistress! Witch! Witch!

«Game» Isak moves out of Cabin.

Isak grabs his skiis and busies himself putting them on, swishing his way up to the side of the sled. "I'll scout ahead."

Isak has left.
Isak heads off South.

«Ground Vehicles» Antti nods as he sets the Solothurn down in the sled with a thud, before hopping up himself. "Lets get moving, then."

«Ground Vehicles» Saimi gets behind the horse- who looks back at her, "Be good." she says, staring at him. Pulling the reins. Nothing. Pulling the reins again, "Come on now. Go!" she says, doing the normal bit to get the horse to get moving. "Bah! Stupid animal!" she cries out- but the horse gets moving eventually.
