Three brave men. Hah! Bad luck. You've been picked by the lieutenant for a
special job, namely scouting the enemies positions before the dawn attack.
The sergeant finishes greasing the face of Newbie Perkins with axle grease,
and then grins at you all. "Alright, lads, listen up."

Sidney the Western Australian marches in with the night to this location
with fellow squadmates. Once arrived in the grassy field, he immediately
steps to crouch low more in the shadows to remain hidden while his
squadmates and he are briefed.

Sidney's Desc
An able-bodied young man with curly blond sun-bleached hair, perhaps a
little longer than formal military regimen expects. His grooming is lax, and
the calloused hands speak of outdoors labour and physical work. Clear green
eyes are offset a bit by a slightly broad flat nose, and the hair's always
left a bit wild and stringy (think a younger Heath Ledger). When he speaks,
the twang presents a rural western Australian manner of speaking.

The soldier is clad in the standard-issued workmanlike woollen khaki jacket,
which is loose-necked and baggy, and detailed with blackened metal buttons.
The lower part of the body is covered by baggy woollen trousers topped
sturdy, lace-up, ankle-length boots made entirely of leather and hobnailed
for extra grip. Puttees are bound around the legs of the pants from ankle to
knee and useful in preventing water and mud from sloshing within, if
constrictive at times. The usual rabbit-fur-felt slouch hat characteristic
of the Australian infantry is missing, and a British steel helmet is worn on
the head.

Thomas glowers back at the sergeant, and waits.

Thomas's Desc
This wiry young man stands at just under 6' tall, and looks every bit the
gormless farmboy. He has a broad, serious face, a blunt nose, and wide-set
brown eyes that are usually set in a slight squint. It's precicely the sort
of face that is, unfortunately, very easy to forget. His features are
somewhat weathered, but it's clear that he's pretty young - no older than 23
at the most, and he seems to be in good health. Judging by his build and
general condition, he's most likely quite accostomed to a life of physical
activity. His dark hair is cut short to military standard, and he's
currently wearing a set of dirt-encrusted British BDUs which bear the
insignia of a Private. An Enfield rifle is hangs from its sling on his left
shoulder. His voice bears a slight Geordie accent.

Perkins fingers his nose speculatively after it's all greased up, offering a
slight nod of thanks to the sergeant. He looks nervous. But, then, the
Englishman seems to always be in a state of semi-nervous tension. He's
learned to keep his mouth shut and his rifle at the ready, at least, and he
does both while th sergeant talks.

Perkins's Desc
A young Englishman, he looks to be at enlistment age at least, but there's
a fresh-faced, bright-eyed look about him that makes it clear he's no
veteran. He's of an average height, with a lithe build that's more notable
for deftness and agility than brute strength. His fine-boned features may be
considered good-looking, if a bit too 'pretty', but they're usually obscured
with too much muck and dirt for it to matter much. He has clear green eyes
and golden blonde hair that's been cut short, in a military style.
He's clad in standard-issue, workmanlike woolen khaki, like every other
bloke on the line. Its lowly, lonely bar of rank insignia mark him as a
Private, and other patches pinpoint him as a member of the British Corps of
Royal Engineers. His loose, baggy jacket is detailed with blackened metal
buttons, and the lower part of his body is covered by likewise baggy woolen
trousers. Sturdy lace-up boots give his feet some protection, ankle-high and
hobnailed for extra grip. Puttees are bound around his legs from ankle to
knee, useful in keeping his feet dry and clean, if constrictive at times. A
British steel helmet is usually worn on his head.

Sidney keeps silent, his blond hair allowed to stay dirtied with the smudge
of earth and dried leaves that comes with the rough camp the troops are kept
in as the regiment moves east. He listens with eyes glistening eager to the
Sergeant, this mission apparently something new to the young man's
experience.

The Sarge smirks. "Maybe if you do well tonight you won't be in on the
actual attack.". Fat chance. "This is a reconnaissance in force. The village
is probably lightly defended, and you aren't the only squad heading in that
direction" ie there aren't many Germans in there though ICly there are
probably a damn sight more than there are codewise, as per usual you'll have
to scale up and include other NPCs a bit. "So, head north of here and see
what you can see, if you can take the village do so. After that, head into
the forests east of the village and see if Fritz has positions in the
forest, and see if you can get an idea of his strength on the north side
hill itself. Stay the hell clear of the west and southern side of the hill,
thats just a killing ground."

Thomas's glower lifts marginally at the prospect of missing the actual
attack. He can hope, can't he? Hey, maybe he'll even get a nice superficial
injury that'll leave an impressive scar behind and put him in hospital for a
comfortable amount of time. He offers the sergeant a tentative nod.

Perkins nods along, particularly as the instruction NOT to go to the western
or southern side of the hill. "Yes, Sergeant," he says, swallowing to steel
himself. Newbie he may be, but he gets the term 'killing ground' well
enough. "Quite understood."

Sidney nods and leans forward to quietly murmur. "Yes, Sarge. We head north
into the woods and flank to check the town, taking it if possible, then
extend eastwards scouting the German positions."

The sarge nods. And reaches out to give Sidney a farewell pat on the helmet.
"Alright. You're in charge. Go.".

Thomas takes a deep breath, fiddles with the strap of his rifle, and looks
blandly to Sidney.

Perkins turns to Sidney, offering his fellow soldier a grin. It's twitchy,
but it's meant to be encouraging and confident. He looks eager to get going,
if nothing else.

Sidney responds with a firm quick nod. "Allright digger." and somehow
manages a quick snap of a smile. He turns to the rest of the squad, Perkins
and Thomas, sucking in a breath before speaking. "Stealth, mates. We go due
north, out of sight of the hill's bloody guns, into the woods. There, we'll
step east and get a good look at the town from in cover. Silent and out of
sight all the way to that point, unless we come across Fritz in the woods.
I'd recommend pistols if you have them, as the rifles won't be of much use
until the enemy's firing on us."

"Righto," Thomas replies - just to show that he understands, even if he
isn't too enthusiastic about it. Not that he's ever been that enthusiastic
about anything, mind you.

Sidney adds in a lower voice. "Pistols, as when we find a bunker or foxhole,
you can bet Fritz is in it, even if we can't see 'im. We sneak down into the
hole and hunt him out, at close range." He lifts the Webley, "These babies
can fit a bayonet, too. The Enfield'll work if you don't have one."

Perkins nods to Sidney. "I haven't a pistol. Haven't much skill with them.
But I've a Mills bomb that I can make use of if things become tight."
Clearly not a situation that appeals to him. He nods, about the Enfield. "It
should be easy enough to avoid the hill, if we aren't pressed into turning
in that direction."

Sidney slowly nods. "Right." He turns to slide the extra magazine of .455
ammo for the Webley back into his ammo pouch, not seeing any others reach
for it. "So silent, everyone. This darkness only works till they shoot up a
flare." He gives a final look to Thomas and Perkins before turning north.

In answer, Thomas pats one of the grenades on his belt. "No good with
pistols, either," he adds.

Perkins nods that eager nod of his to Sidney. "Quiet as a cat, Private," he
whispers, slipping his rifle into his hands, in a ready firing position. He
turns north.

Sidney moves through the night swiftly with the two other men. Nearing the
two, though, the squad slows to surveil.

Perkins rabbits along through the darkness with the other two men, sticking
near Sidney, to catch any further instructions. He's (marginally) less
twitchy than he was on his first outing. But warier.

Sidney pauses to let his eyes adjust to the darkness ahead, then the young
ANZAC combat engineer makes a motion of his hand forward, towards the north,
pointing to his eyes and then shaking his head as the hand makes a motion of
'nada' to indicate no Germans spotted.

Perkins breathes out a soft but fervent breath of relief when Sidney's
signal indicates a lack of Jerry.

Thomas follows Sidney's hand, looking northwards, then casts a shifty look
at the darkness eastwards. He shakes his head, apparently unable to see
anything of note.

Sidney nods once, and leads the men to continue northward, himself taking

Perkins slips after Sidney, peering into the darkness east of them. "We
should be nearly on top of that village," he whispers tersely to the other
soldiers. Anything else he has to say is cut off by the sound of rifle fire
from said village.

Sidney had made it forward with Perkins ahead of Thomas, but as a German
opens fire from the village east when the latter arrives, Sidney just
motions ahead, gesturing northwards as if to urge speed. "Hep hep!"

Sidney whispers quickly. "Move on, advance, hurry. There's no cover in this

Thomas hurries after Sidney and Perkins, some way behind them. He holds his
hands up slightly to show Sidney that he's unscathed.

Perkins is keeping as quiet as he can, following close behind Sidney. He
glances behind him, squinting to make out Thomas following. "What's the move
now?" he asks Sidney. "Come at the village from the north end?"

Thomas straightens up somewhat to get a better look at what's ahead of them,
eastwards. However, he seems to see nothing of importance, and remains
silent.

Sidney slowly nods to Perkins after giving Thomas a quick nod of
acknowledgement. "North again, then east. Should put us in the forest due
north of the ville. We can recon from there how many Germans are in the
village. If it's just one, we'll sneak in and surprise him, then get out
ASAP so the forces on the hill don't see us."

Sidney adds a motion toward the east from here.

Perkins keeps silent, creeping east with Sidney. He lingers a moment, to
glance back at Thomas.

Thomas nods back, and makes to follow.

Sidney nods slowly, and starts moving along with the others, into the field

thistles which adds splashes of green amidst all the yellow.

Sidney moves crouched low, and once in the wheatfield north of the village,
turns silently to try to get a good look towards the cluster of homes and
the church by the square.

Perkins peers south as well, into the village. The belly of the beast. The
lion's den. There destination and their doom.

A few steps behind, Thomas follows Sidney's line of sight, peering in to the
darkness.

Sidney focuses his gaze, peering in the direction of the town. He lifts one
finger, nodding towards where he sees something, and makes a gesture as if
to indicate a rifleman.

Sidney whispers, "He's not in cover. We can snipe him if you want." The
young Australian looks to the two riflemen, to gauge their reaction to that.

He then lifts his rifle to his shoulder to aim.

Perkins nods to ANZAC, whispering, "A fine idea, Private Sidney. I haven't
much skill as a sniper. Just a bloke with a rifle, really." The slight
widening of his eyes indicates he, too, has seen the German.

«Ground Combat» Konstantin moves South <S>.

Sidney considers for a moment, then shakes his head. "Negative on that. Bad
choice after all." He whispers, "Too dark. He's moved."

"Bugger," Thomas mutters, and lowers the rifle again.

Sidney lifts a finger to his eyes, and motions to both of you to look east.

Perkins nods. "He went south. Can't see anymore of the blighters now…"

Thomas follows Sidney's gesture, but shakes his head. Can't see anything.

Perkins squints east, but he likewise shakes his head, spotting nothing.

Sidney adds quietly, "He's probably alerting his bedmates he's spotted a
squad doing recon. The area south is wide open, and in view of the hill."

Sidney adds a gesture east, as if to move as he lifts himself to advance in
that direction.

Thomas flashes Sidney a quick, slightly unhindged grin at that, then makes
to follow.

Tall, regal trees reach for the sky as they have for hundreds of years,
their crowns lending welcome shade in the summer and frosty artwork in the
winter. Old leaves cover the ground, but obscured by plentiful underbrush,
they are more felt than seen when walking over them. It is an oasis in an
area otherwise covered by farmland, left alone to flourish where elsewhere
the hand of man has cut down every tree for their own needs.

Sidney is holding his position, peering south as Perkins arrives. The
Australian appears to be checking that direction for signs of Fritz.

"Just see wire that way," Thomas mumbles, gesturing southwards, then east;
"That way, nothing."

Sidney lifts a finger, a single finger, and quickly mimes a rifle and points
south again.

Perkins catches up with Sidney, coming to a stop and nodding, getting his
rifle up and turning his eyes south.

Thomas raises his eyebrows at Sidney, and lifts his own rifle to a more
ready position.

Sidney whispers, "One kaiserkraut in the woods south. Don't fire, he's
covered in darkness and we'll miss."

Perkins points his rifle at the German to the south of them, but he holds
his fire. "I see him, but I don't think he sees us," he says. He hopes,
rather. "What's our next move? We have to go south if we're to reach the
village."

Sidney whispers in return. "Sneak like footpads. Silent kill with bayonets."

Thomas lowers the rifle again, if only to show Sidney that he's not about to
fire now. He just nods once, lips pursed.

Perkins swallows hard, but he nods, understanding the plan. "Bayonets.
Quite." The bayonet on his own rifle is still free of blood stains.

Erwin pauses in his movement, to look around. He speaks quietly with a
companion, barely audible in the forest.

Sidney whispers swiftly, "Another's with him I can't see. He's talking with
a mate."

Thomas looks southwards again, and squints. It seems that he's struggling to
see -either- of the two Germans.

Perkins peers intently into the darkness. He can make out enough to see the
German talking to…someone. But that someone remains undetected. "Yes. I
can't see him, but unless he's bluffing it seems he has a mate down there."

Sidney motions south, and starts moving. "Thomas, if you can't see 'em, you
will when they fire a response. I can only see one <indicates Erwin>." A nod
to Perkins, "Let's move. All of us. Engage in ambush."

"Mates, you're hit, but we've got to get back in cover. Hill's right below

Perkins is white-faced as he stares at his wounded leg, but it seems as much

Sidney ducks down, trying to keep low. "Fritz's yellow brother is still over
there…" gesturing into the woods to the east. "He's got a shot. We have to
move." The man looks back to Perkins. "We'll tend our wounds there. If
you're hit bad, you can find cover in the north and stay put."

«Game» Sidney assists Perkins!

Thomas is just a giant ball of human kindness, not. The adrenaline hasn't
quite worn off, so he's still able to ignore is own injuries somewhat, but
it's clear that he's not in tip-top condition. He gives Erwin another jab to
steer him northwards.

Perkins nods a little to Sidney, calmer now that he hasn't mentioned the
medics. He limps north.

«Ground Combat» Erwin moves North <N>.
«Ground Combat» Ernst fires his MG 08 at Thomas but misses!

Sidney tries to help Perkins move, but his own speed is slower due to trying
to stay in cover. "Move it!" to Thomas.

«Ground Combat» Thomas moves North <N>.
«Ground Combat» Perkins moves North <N>.

«Illumination» A Very light burns out.

Erwin looks about when he realises one of the Allies has vanished. He looks
a bit suspicious, but says nothing, moving to stand up against a tree.

«Ground Combat» You notice Sidney arrive at Forest.

Thomas draws his left arm close to his body, and tucks it under his right
armpit. He breathes in and out through his teeth, giving Erwin a dark look.
There are plenty of soldiers on the battlefield who'd offer a wounded
prisoner some assistance, or at least a cigarette. Thomas, however, is not
one of them.

Sidney moves in to where the others are. His body shows no blood, and he's
holding his rifle. "One German in a trench on this corner of the hill…" He
motions south. "Behind wire. German runner ran south to the hill …his
yellow mate" referring to the prisoner in a gesture.

Perkins sinks down against another tree, once he can sit again, breathing
hard. He closes his eyes and purses his lips, teeth gritted, using every
ounce of British stiffness he can to keep himself from going to pieces. He
looks up at Sidney, nodding. "They seem to be moving like ants 'round that
village. Maybe…maybe this one can tell the Lieutenant something…" He
eyes Erwin.

Sidney has a sheet of paper in his hand, folded against the rifle. Some
scrawled notes can be made out, but not read in the poor visibility.

Thomas's attention shifts from Erwin to Perkins. He looks blankly at the
other private as if he'd like to say something helpful but, apparently
unable to think of anything, remains silent. Thomas offers Perkins an
apologetic (and lopsided) shrug, then resumes staring daggers at the German.

Sidney takes a moment to get in position with the two other comrades,
shifting around to peer back to the south towards where the skirmish took
place. "Prisoner's going to slow us. How bad are your wounds?" both to
Perkins and Thomas.

"Not…not bad at all," Perkins says quickly to Sidney. His leg is nastily
gashed up, but he's fervent in denying this fact.

Sidney grimaces a bit. "I've no training in first aid, mate." as he looks
aside over to Perkins. "But you're not moving with that leg." and sadly
shakes his head. The blond combat engineer turns to regard Thomas, looking
for blood on the uniform or revealled wounds.

Thomas is trying to keep his arm out of sight and out of mind, but his
sleeve is completely soaked in blood that's mostly his. "It hurts like
bastard," he says, hoarsely. "I sorta think we're write-offs."

Sidney slowly nods. "If either of you have first aid training, I'd suggest
you pull out the kit now. After you dodgers, then tend the prisoner." He
glances south again. "I need to scout. You both wait here for me to return.
If you hear shooting, go west and flank the town south without me. Write me
off."

"I…I've a little," Perkins says. The bandaging job on his own leg isn't
terribly skilled, but he's stuffed some cloth to stall the bleeding. He
fumbles for his field kit, to make another go at it, nodding to Sidney. His
fingers shake as he does so.

«Medic Code» Perkins attempts first aid on Thomas but fails.
«Medic Code» Perkins attempts first aid on Thomas but fails.

Sidney adds "Eyes south and east. I'll just recon the north slope of the
hill. The south's for other boys." A nod to Perkins. "Good word. Do as best
you can."

Erwin stays stonily silent, as he looks over the Allied soldiers wounds with
a dull sort of look.

«Ground Combat» Sidney moves East <E>.

Thomas shakes his head at the mention of first aid training - and he doesn't
look too pleased about the prospect of having to wait around any longer,
either. He grudgingly offers his arm to Perkins so that the other Brit can
make another go at it, and pointedly looks in the other direction as Perkins
does so.

Perkins does his best to bandage Thomas's arm, but his best isn't very good.
The most he can do is wrap is and leave it to be attended by someone with
more skill. His shaking hands likely have something to do with his failure
to do much good. "I…I can't go to hospital," he mutters, as much to
himself as Thomas. "I can't. I won't…!"

"Don't be bloody daft," Thomas tells Perkins. "Nothing wrong with hospital."
He hugs his arm close to him again, still not looking at it. All the same,
he remembers his manners, and adds, "Thanks."

«Ground Combat» You notice Sidney arrive at Forest.

Sidney returns to where the others are, scowling to himself as he makes a
face. "Missjudged the hill. Let's all move west. Thomas, you're the one in
charge of the prisoner, 'right?"

"I can't!" Perkins protests, a raw edge in his tone, to Thomas. "They'll
take me off the line. It…it isn't necessary, is all." He trails off,
nodding unsteadily to Sidney when he suggests they move west. He's in no
shape to argue.

Erwin straightens when it looks like its time to move out.

Sidney leans to offer Perkins some help up, not saying a word as he does so.
A glance to the prisoner, though, as if the Australian's evaluating options
on the quick.

Thomas nods at that, and makes a half-hearted attempt at aiming his rifle at
Erwin again. Having calmly to stand next to the guy that you were trying to
kill in cold blood five minutes ago is a pretty strange experience. He
spares Perkins an incredulous look, then shakes his head. "Jesus Christ,
you're sodding dumber than I am." That said, he nods to Sidney.

Perkins accepts Sidney's aid with a grimace, his heart still racing, eyes
rather wild. But, for now, he just goes along quietly. Thomas's words make
him flinch, but he smirks as he does it. "Perhaps…I'm here, after all."

Sidney mutters, "Hurry. They might send out a squad to search for us." to
the others of the Commonwealth, giving a short nod back.

Wheatfield
==============================================
[The Grid]-----> > > > > THE LOST GENERATION < < <

Like a golden sea, the wheatfield stretches out with forest in the distance,
or far off farm houses. The land is flat and open and anyone moving through
it is easily spotted. Here and there some weed has conquered an area, mostly
thistles which adds splashes of green amidst all the yellow.

It is currently night time.

«Ground Combat» You notice Erwin arrive at Wheatfield.

Sidney takes the lead in getting back into the wheatfield, giving a quick
look round as the others join. A glance again back to the prisoner, perhaps
making it obvious the fellow in gray has his attention. "Allright. Thomas,
Perkins, continue west. I'm going to recon the hill from the wheatfield at
this corner. Again. If you hear shots, write me off and continue further
west to flank south back to our line."

«Ground Combat» Sidney reloads his Lee Enfield SMLE!

Perkins blinks at Sidney. "Alone? Private, perhaps it's best we all make to
get back. Surely we've gathered enough information. There's no call to
risk…writing you off."

Thomas regards Sidney blankly. "Yeah. Uh. You don't -have- to do this…" he
tells him.

Sidney slowly and with a firmness shakes his head. "I'm not going to fight,
I'm making notes of their positions. If they see me, I'll break off and move
away out of range and sight. If I'm dead, I don't want any of you mates to
follow me where I go, got it?"

Sidney gestures west, "Keep moving till you can retrace our steps back south
to the line. I'll join you west of town, or just north of that point."

«Game» Erwin changes his style to Stealth!

Perkins is loath to try and stop Sidney, but he has to try and protest
again. "Truly, Private, you don't need to do this. We've gathered plenty of
information, and a prisoner to boot." He does nod at the last. With that
leg, he couldn't follow even if he wanted to.

Sidney notes Erwin's step into shadows. "If the prisoner tries to run, shoot
him Thomas." He turns back to Perkins, as if to help him get a bit of help
moving west.

Thomas's nonplussed expression doesn't change. Again, he shakes his head,
and continues moving west. He's still not entirely sure that he doesn't want
to kill Erwin yet, so he watches the man beadily.

Erwin has kinda figured out by now that Thomas is looking for an excuse to
use him to fertilise the fields, so he stays very quiet, and goes wherever
Thomas points. Its almost like having a pet dog.

Sidney nods again, not following the others as he turns to the south,
studying the field as he tries to get his eyes adjusted to the visible
shapes.

Sidney mutters, "Looks clear. Move on men." back to the others, motioning
them west. "I'll cut through the ville."

Grass
==============================================
[The Grid]-----> > > > > THE LOST GENERATION < < <

A flat plain of short grass stretches out around you, broken by the
occasional bush or tree. It is rather exposed out here, the grass being too
short to hide in, and cover too sparse to hide behind.

It is currently night time.

Perkins flinches at the sound of rifle fire as he keeps heading west, his
shoulders twitching. "Bloody fool…" he murmurs to himself. After a pause
he adds, "We shouldn't have left him."

Thomas stops in his tracks, and cants his head slightly at the sound of
gunfire. "It was his choice," he mutters. "Some people, you can't tell them
nothing. He was warned."

«Ground Combat» You hear the sound of Rifles from Grass (2 2)!

Perkins shakes his head. "He's gone to his death out there." He sighs, his
head falling a little. "This is nothing like the way they described it back
in England. Nothing like…"

Thomas snorts. "You'll get used to it, pretty soon," he tells Perkins. It,
er, doesn't sound like it's meant to be very comforting.

Perkins truges, practically one-legged, along after Thomas. He shakes his
head. "I doubt I'll have a chance to get used to it…" He sighs. "Oh, I
should never have come. I should never have come. What will my father
say…?"

«Ground Combat» You notice Sidney arrive at Grass.

"Ha. You got a -choice- in coming?" Thomas asks Perkins, grimly amused by
that.

Sidney appears as a shadow in the grassy plain, holding a rifle and a pad of
notes. When his eyes make out the remainder of the squad and its prisoner,
he quickly whispers loud enough to be heard. "Squad! Sidney here. Back."

"I made my choice, yes," Perkins says sourly, not looking at Thomas.
"But…" He looks up, his eyes widening when he catches sight of the ANZAC.
As if he can't believe what he's seeing. "Private Sidney! You're alive!"
It's gasped in barely a whisper.

Thomas gives Sidney a 'hey, you're not dead yet,' kind of look upon the
ANZAC's return to the squad. He whistles, then resumes staring incredulously
at Perkins. The Private opts to remain silent on the young man's decision.
It's probably for the best.

Sidney gives a quick nod. "South, keep moving lads." He takes a glance to
Perkins leg as he moves to walk alongside the fellow.
