Counterattack

Thatcher nods his head as he adjusts the fit on his helmet. "Aye, them
german snipas have scopes on their rifles.. Count your nose hairs from
a mile away, they can."

Marlon smiles a little at Thatcher's comment, sparing a look
toward Byrd before casually Marlon settles in, remaining crouch as he
stands to the side of the trench, awaiting their fate to arrive or to be
ordered upon them. Marlon casts a glance toward Thatcher, a simple nod
conveyed to his fellow soldier before once again Marlon's gaze is moving
along the trench, taking in the lay of the tunnel lacking a ceiling
running in each direction, his lip mauled by his teeth for a moment before
he glances up to the sky once again.

Brooks nods to Byrd's question and says, "The line of sight can be
pretty clear when it's a light in the darkness they're aiming at. Have to
be careful." He nods again in agreement with Thatcher, glancing over the
edge of the trench a moment.

Ethan makes his way down the trench, his gas mask removed and a harsh
cough taking its place. Its sporatic, though it looks rather painful.
His head is ducked low, and his rifle is held in both hands, albeit a tad
more weakly than he used to. Making his way over towards Byrd, he
offers a nod, and forces himself to smile. "What's going on?"

Byrd fingers his nose as he nods distractedly back to Ethan. As if
making sure it's still on his face. "Those buggers aren't even ruddy human,
are they?" he mutters, mostly to himself. "Goddamn spooks they are.
Never sleep, never run out of ammunition, eyes look Goddamn hawks…" He
trails off, hands fidgeting on his rifle and eyes looking east.

Ethan coughs roughly, spitting some blood out onto the mud. With a
sigh, he tries again, eyes glancing eastwards for a few moments, before
looking around him. "Someone wanna bloody tell me whats happening?" He
sighs, obviously looking a little frustrated, as well as nervous.

Major Carver is off to one side, talking with some mechanics about the
state of the tank over there. They are shaking their heads a bit, and
yes, the tank is looking quite scorched and dented.

Brissac has made sure that his MG is working, and looks around for a
few momentsâ, frowning a bit at the sight of Carver discussing
something. That can *never* be good. He then shrugs a bit at Ethan's question,
"A war," he replies, calmly. Don't look at him, that's all he's sure
about at the moment.

«Ground Combat» Byrd changes his fighting style to Standard.

Glances to the mask of his gas suit to the side, the rest of
his body suited up and ready. Willy looks along the trench once again,
and then to Byrdie and finally Ethan as Marlon 'Willy' speaks up, "Lad,
expect a war..what did you come here for? The view?", the Brit soldier
smiles a little before glance up and over the trench once again in the
darkness, before lowering down once more as he mutters quietly, "Damn
Jerry's love to make as wait in anticipation of their morning invitation
for tea.."

Byrd shrugs to Ethan. Like he knows. "Not much now it seems, mate," he
answers, casting a nervous eye over at the brass. That may change.

Brooks glances back to Byrd and grins, "Oh, they run out of ammunition.
Sleep, too, saw a prisoner sleeping once. Of course, he was pretty beat
up. As for the rest, not really sure." He looks back to Ethan then and
shrugs a little, "Nothing but waiting, so far tonight, it seems."

Ethan mutters, gripping his rifle and taking a seat on one of the ammo
crates. "None of you blokes are any bloody help." He sighs, which just
so happens to throw him into another harsh coughing fit. Gathering some
blood in his cheek and spitting it out onto the ground. With another
cough, he wraps his arms around his rifle, holding it close to his chest.

Thatcher stifles a yawn with his fist, and watches as still more and
more troops line up in the trenches. The trains have been bringing them
in for the past couple of days for this effort, and just two days before
poor old thatch was due to be rotated off the line for a week of rest
and relaxation, brass decides to give the germans a push. He shakes his
head, looking at all the scared faces.

Etienne slips down into the trench, a grim look on his face. Once down
he checks his gas mask and shotgun and then settles against the side of
the trench cradling his weapon with. A long breath escapes his lips.

Carver heads down into the trench, not bothering to salute. "You've all
heard the rumours I'm sure, men. Well, they are true. We're making
another push at sunup. Got put forward slightly due to the big hole in the
wire you boys managed with the last wiring party."

Thatcher frowns. How's that for a pat on the back for a job well done?
Just to make Thatcher feel a bit guilty, that was.

Ethan winces slightly, resting his head back against the trench wall as
he looks rather depressed now. He's had enough problems these past few
weeks, and now he has to run across an open field to get shot by some
bloke who wants to be in this war about as much as anyone else? He
shifts around a little on the crate, obviously thinking a little harder
about this. He coughs every now and then, obviously in some pain.

The moral of the story is: Do your job poorly. Brissac just sighs a
little bit as he hears Carver's announcement. He leans to the trench wall,
for the moment. "Okay, you guys kill them all while they're busy
shooting at me…" he offers with a bit of forced lightness to the ther
soldiers. Then looking back to the major, "Unless that's not allowed, sir?"
he adds.

Byrd frowns some himself, in Thatcher's direction. "Goody on us," he
mutters under his breath, giving his rifle a quick check and trying to
remain very much in the background. Maybe the brass'll pass him over if
he stays very, very quiet.

Brooks sits straighter as Carver comes into the trench, and looks up to
listen to him. He nods a little seriously, glancing to some of the
others gathered. He grins slightly at Brissac's comment, but says nothing,
turning his attention back to Carver.

Carver glances back at the tank. "That light tank will be your support,
and theres a creeping barrage planned as well. If you get to the enemy
trenches, the companies holding the ground north and south of our
position will be attacking as well, but that point directly opposite us has
been deemed the weak spot, so you are going first. Course, Fritz
probably knows its the weak spot as well. Which is why you got the tank."

"The trenches are nicer on the other side" Legrand mutters in broken
English as a reply to all the negative reaction, but he doesn't seem all
that eager himself. Maybe if he stays very still he won't have to go.

Thatcher nods his head, thinking for a moment. He looks to Byrd, and
says, "When we gets ta that trench, we'll push up to the communication's
line." He taps his satchel charge. "I'll blow the trench there, so they
can't swarm us wif reinforcements."

Etienne watches the other men as Carver explains. Their reactions of
resignation are mirrored by his own. "When do we go, Major?" Not that
he's eager, but what's the point in waiting he figures.

"Maybe I'll finally get hold of some German ammo for that MG…"
Brissac mutters to himself, before he looks over at the tank, for a few
moments. That makes things look a bit better, doesn't it? Until it starts
burning, or something.

Marlon 'Willy' Willoughby looks to Thatcher and Byrd, a little
nod conveyed in their direction as the Brit pipes up, his tone quiet,
"I'll be right there with'ya, ol'chap. Have to make sure you get your
nice toys into Jerry's trench so that we can watch the fireworks,
right?", Marlon states toward Thatcher before turning his attention back
toward Major Carver, watching the man with wait in his eyes, the butt of his
rifle firmly planted against the floor of the trench while he listens
and waits.

Byrd sighs as the involvement of the tank is mentioned. Something he's
actually trained for. Bugger. He stands, taking a deep breath and
nodding to Thatcher. At least he'll have the cover of the beast. More than
can be said for most.

Thatcher frowns as Byrd gets the tap for the tank. Whenever artillery
is involved, those things have a habit of exploding. He gives the man a
silent nod, the kind of nod you'd give your friend just before he
stepped up to the gallows with the hangman looking down upon him.

Byrd catches that frown from Thatcher, paling several shades. He gulps,
casting a shifty gaze toward the tank.

Handling the tank should be easy. Get it running straight for the
German lines, jump out of it, and let it explode on the enemy before you
charge. Brissac doesn't say anything, though, just listens to what's being
said, at the moment.

Carver nods at Thatcher. "Our tactics are still bite and hold. Move to
take their front line, and then hold on until relieved." he says.
"Cutting off German reinforcements will needless to say be a sound plan."

Thatcher nods his head, and takes a second satchel charge, as there
seems to be quite a few laying about. He points to the nearest bloke, and
says, "Here, carry this for me," he says, handing the soldier a charge.
"And you stay roit on my arse, ya hear me?"

Byrd twitches his hands toward his pocket again, really wishing he
could smoke. But he restrains himself. He keeps his eyes on the tank,
trying to get some encouragement from the idea he'll be safe inside it. It
suddenly looks very small and prone to fire, however.

"So lads, what is the battle plan? Sprint across that open
field toward Jerry's bullets, and try to get into their trenches? No cover
fire..just run?", Marlon asks with a light rise in tone as he slowly
rises up from his crouch, keeping his head down all the while as he
slowly looks up and down the line.
Brissac seems to have been lost in thought, and now looks up. "Who will
be manning the tank, then?" he asks, finally.
Time passes all too quickly when an assault is planned. And so, its
sunup!
Major Carver returns to the trenches, and points at Byrd and Brissac.
"You two, you got the tank. Everybody else, be ready to go. The tank can
go slightly ahead of the rest of you, but not too far ahead. We don't
want them alerted and ready."

«Ground Combat» You are now peeking into New No Mans Land South.

At the major's orders, Thatcher doublechecks the load on his rifle, and
closes his eyes, psycheing himself up for the task.

"Perhaps all us chaps should try to file in behind the tank?
Use it as cover until we can all break off and try to make a break for
Jerry's trenches?", Marlon asks this time, trying to come up with the
best course of action that'll allow them to keep the most number of men
alive. Power of numbers was what would keep many alive today, and it was
obvious that was the way Marlon was thinking by his voiced words.

Byrd offers Brissac a wry shrug and grin. Looks like they'll be manning
it. He offers the other man a tap of his helmet, sliding off the crate
and heading to board the tank. "Don't worry, mate. Safe with me, you
are. These other blokes, they're set on being heroes, you see. Me, I just
want to keep my head down and my arse in one piece."

Thatcher peeks up over the lip of the trench. "When's the bombardment
going to start?" he wonders.

Carver shakes his head. "The tank isnt all that big. We could use a
Mark V to transport you all over there inside it… but its got thinner
armour. Up to you, though.". He eyes his watch. "Should be happening any
second."
Brissac sighs a bit, "Should have kept quiet," he mutters to himself.
He then nods at Byrd. "We'd better get ready, then?" he asks, with a
half-grin.

"Well lads? Let's go invite Jerry over for our own tea
party..once the bombardment starts, perhaps Jerry'll keep their heads down and
not notice us running into their trenches until it's too late…",
Marlon begins to rise, his hand shifting upward to adjust his helmet before
he peers toward the east, remaining crouched down beneath the safety of
the defilade the trench wall provides, his gaze shifting over the other
men as he listens and awaits.

Legrand turns around so he doesn't have his back to the trench wall,
giving the tank crew a quick glance before he grips his rifle a little
bit tighter, muttering to himself.

Etienne snorts at Byrd's pronouncement. He for one is all for keeping
head head down. At Carver's answer to Thatcher's question he glances up
at the sky, expectantly.

Brooks looks to the others and back to Carver, "If it's all the same,
sir, I think I'd rather make the run. If someone's shooting at me, I'd
at least like the ability to attempt to get out of the way."

Thatcher climbs out of the trench as the sounds of the 17 pounders can
be heard echoing over the battlefield. Towards the east, explosions and
cascades of dirt can be seen. He's got his enfield up, and looks
forward grimley.

Marlon 'Willy' rises up from his crouch, gripping his rifle a
little more tightly as he takes a deep breath and mutters more to
himself than anyone else present, "Watch over us, Lord..save the spirits of
those who die today..", and with that Marlon 'Willy' Willoughby rises up
out of the front line trenches of the Allied war machine, climbing up
over the wall and attempting to keep low as he begins to progress
forward, making sure to keep his head down, and create as little a target as
possible.

Byrd ain't a praying man, so he just tries not to snivel as he climbs
out of the trench and makes his way to the tank. He returns Brissac's
half grin. "Ready when you are, mate. Hope you're a good shot."

«Ground Vehicles» Byrd gets into Renault FT-17MG.#-1

Thatcher takes the opportunity to get in right close to the tank. He's
not wanting to get shot up right off the bat, so he makes sure he's
right behind the lumbering thing.

Brooks glances back as the others start to pull out of the trench, and
quickly moves to follow suit, rifle in hand now. He, much like the
others, moves carefully, attempting to keep quiet and down as he moves
forward with them. He keeps close to the others, but frequently glances
back towards the tank until it starts to move.

Legrand sneaks out of the trench as the crew is finally starting to get
ready, letting out a curse at the sun in various languages like some
kind of mantra.

Marlon does precisely the same as Thatcher, the two seeming to
be thinking alike as Marlon files in along with Thatcher behind the
take, Marlon's Lee Enfield held within his grasp as he glances over toward
Thatcher before looking away once again, awaiting the lumbering machine
of war to begin moving so that they can get this mission underway.

(From Renault FT-17MG) Byrd chuckles at Brissac's 'Maybe' as he climbs
into the tank and moves to hunker down in the driver's seat. "You ain't
an optimist are you, mate? I like that. Good to have a bit of realism."

Etienne joins Thatcher near the back of the tank. He nods at the man,
"Bonne idee, mon ami." He looks a the grenade in his hand, considering
whether to exchange it for the shotgun but decides to hold on to it for
now.

Thatcher smiles as he looks over Etienne with the mills bomb. "Not
willin ta part wif your best spirits, eh froggie?"

Guy has arrived.

Etienne grins, "When we're done with, drinks on on me. How's that?"

(From Renault FT-17MG) shrugs a little bit, "Well, we all are going to
die some time or the other, so it's really all about trying to delay
that day," he says, getting into the gunner's seat, and checking over the
weapons.

German trenches. "Sixty seconds men, get ready."

(From Renault FT-17MG) Byrd settles in, his hands shaking as he takes
the wheel and starts to work the controls. Maybe, someday, he'll stop
shaking before going into combat. But this ain't the day. "So, you got a
name?" he yells to Brissac, over the roar of the tank engine. "Rather
like to know who I'm fixing to meet my maker with."

Tate hawks and spits into the dirt, readying his rifle. He keeps his
eyes looking east, body tense and ready to spring.

(From Renault FT-17MG) "Jacques," Brissac replies, shrugging a little
bit. "And if our good Maker is doing like he usually does, we'll live to
fight yet another day."

Thatcher gives his crotch one last scratch as he waits behind the tank.
The diesel fumes are thick, and he coughs as he squats down to get away
from the smell.

Carver blows his whistle, its time! Go go go!

(From Renault FT-17MG) "Byrd's my name," the New Zealander yells to
Brissac, as if the man had asked. "Felix Byrd, but I don't right take much
to the Felix part. You can call me Byrdie, if you like. Most of me
mates do, back home. Hope it'll mean I can fly this bugger well enough."

The front lines once went through here, right up against the edge of
the town, and though the war has since moved on, the wreckage and rot is
still here for all to see. Old trenches, half collapsed, shell holes,
unexploded debris - and the remains of the tens of thousands of men who
died on this relatively small patch of ground.

The River Scorpe makes its way broadly eastwards from here, and the
river is being well utilised, with barges carrying war material to the
front and wounded back, while soldiers who have to make the trip marching
in ragged lines along the riverbank.

It is currently daytime.

Marlon begins at an even pace as the tank begins to roll
forward toward ¹the German lines. His rifle at the ready, but he does his
best to remain at the back of the tank, tucked in behind the lumbering
vehicle. He glances off to each side and to those trailing along with him
behind the tank as he exhales a breath, feeling the adrenaline begin to
pump with the sound of the artillery barrage fading in and out, along
with the sound of unleashing weapons from the German lines.

(From Renault FT-17MG) The small(er) tank rolls into No Man's Land,
with Byrd and Brissac in tow. And almost instantly comes under fire from
the Germans. Byrd shudders, his knuckles turning white on the controls.
"What the hell am I doing here…?" he mutters. But that's probably
lost in the roar of the machine.

Brissac. "I…HOLY FUCKING HELL!" Such is screamed when artillery hits his
tank.
Brand looks around, "Is there a medic about?"

Legrand jumps when Thatcher blows the connection, his bloody hands
slipping on the rifle as he tries to reload it. He's just starting to get
the rifle ready when he feels the sweet sweet smell of chlorine, quickly
scrambling to get his gas gear ready. "Let's go home." he mutters from
underneath the gas mask.

Thatcher screams as the chorine assaults his eyes. "BASTAAAAAADS!!!" he
rolls around in the mud, trying to get his mask on while he wheezes and
chokes on the deadly fumes.

(From Renault FT-17MG) "I knew it," Brissac mutters to himself as he
ducks down when the artillery hits the tank. "Relax, if that's the best
they can do, we're all safe here…"

Brand begins to speak to his men, "We're now at the cusp of history!
We've driven back the germans. Now.. we need to hold our trenches against
the damn germans.. Someone have to return to get us more ammos

he's awake, his face breaking into a broad grin. He tries to clap the

You're alive!" He laughs at the shouting between Brissac and Brand.
"Your bastards'll sing great tales, my friend."

Legrand tries to wipe some blood off his rifle, it keeps on running
down his arms and out on to his hands, although it has slowed down quite a
lot from before. He takes a peek towards where he's guessing the
Germans will come from, but is interrupted by the rain of dirt that the
artillery sends around.

Ethan grunts, breathing heavily through his gas mask as he steadies
himself, though he looks incredibly stressed. He takes up a position next
to Legrand, looking over to him for a half moment, before speaking
quickly, and roughly. He's cut off from speaking though from the blast from
the artillery, nearly throwing him. Grunting, he forgets trying to
speak, instead ducking behind the fortification, and steadying his rifle,
aimed eastwards.

stops swimming, but still. "I am?" Brissac asks to Byrd, a bit lightly.
"And here I thought I was dead now." He then laughs as he hears the
words from Brand. "Well, I promised their mothers not to speak too much of

slaughter to begin. He checks it once again to make sure it's fully loaded.

Ethan grunts slightly, looking rather nervous underneath his gas mask.
His rifle holds steady, though, aimed eastwards, the most likely attack
position. He's sweating heavily, and his muscles are all tensed up. The
rifles butt is firmly against his shoulder, and he makes sure to check
it one final time before the assault.

Brand looks out over the trenches into the next line, "Nothing it seems
so far."

Tate is jittery, breathing in short sips of air as he readies his rifle
and listens to the commands behind handed around.

update on how our friends are doing.

shoulder, as he peers carefully down the sights, the gas mask obviously making
a little trouble for him. His breath is still rough, though he seems to
have atleast gotten a hold of himself.
