Sergeant Pavlov roused you lot perhaps a half hour ago. The thunder of shelling and gunfire in this quarter of the city has made it impossible to sleep, and the fighting nearby has made him suspect the Germans are planning another rush on the house. He will not take one step back. Which means you all won't either! You've been stationed on the first floor to hold. Those are the only orders. Hold.

Karpov is the new kid in the group, and has taken up a position behind some rubble. Looking around carefully for now, keeping his attention on the east, for the moment.
Novikova would sigh. No sleep. Novikova looks less than thrilled at the Nazi Symphony of shelling and gunfire. She is a bit sleepy, but thanks to being a comparative lunk, she ends up manning the MG while on watch. Since she has no need of her SVT in the meantime, she's set it aside. Her hazel eyes are a bit glazed as she watches the window. "Hmm. I'd complain about the stinking Nazis but…" Well, Novikova isn't above joking at her own problems.
Elise is behind some rubble at the base of the stairs, eyes bearing dark circles from too little sleep in the past few days. Today hasn't helped any. She's borrowing Novi's rifle, keeping wary watch on the west. "You know they stink even if you can't smell them," Elise points out.
So, hold Yulia does… hold her rifle, that is, with a death grip. Shadows circle under her eyes too, and a yawn slips, covered quickly by a gloved hand. She tries to wake herself up a bit, blinking rapidly, as she too watches the window.
Karpov turns his attention over to the west after a few moments, looking a bit lost in thought for now. And tired.
Novikova smiles, "True enough." She nods at her cousin. She squirms, to settle in more comfortably. She squints, narrowing her eyes as she peers to the west. She looks to Karpov, offering a nod in greeting. Then back to peering.

Elise glances over to the new guy, but only briefly. "Here they come," she says, raising her rifle.

Elise holsters her pistol, bending down to verify that yes, Novi is still breathing. She murmurs soft thanks under her breath. Then realizing there might be more, she drags Zoya down into cover and scans west. "I don't see those other two any more. They must have pulled back. I think the new guy's still alive." She doesn't even know his name, shame.

"They did?" Yulia groans. She is more happy when they are dead rather than fading back into the woodwork to terrorize later. "But. Elise, thank you," she adds in a breath, momentarily grabbing Elise's sleeve with her left hand. Seems like the right one is being picked upon, having just hardly healed. "I thought…" The sentence fades as Yulia works for more air.
Elise watches for another few moments to make sure there are no more coming, then rummages in her pack for one of their makeshift bandages. "Here, sit down, Comrade, let me help," Elise says, applying pressure while still keeping a distracted eye to the west, just in case. A faint smile at the thanks. "You've done as much for me. You'll be all right, Comrade Doctor will fix you up good as new. They do have an odd penchant for hands," she notes with a frown.
"Da. He owes me one." Yulia's mouth twitches weakly. "And they do. Snipers, particularly. Just ask Zoya." She rolls a worried look towards said botanist. "We'll need help.. getting them back up…"
Elise looks around, dragging the back of her hand across her sweaty face. "Da. You stay here with them. I'll go and get help." She doesn't want to leave the wounded alone but as Yulia pointed out, they need help.

Elise ran upstairs to get some help, both to cart the wounded upstairs and to take over the defense on the ground floor. She helps Yulia herself, being a little small to be carrying Novi upstairs. Only once they get everyone settled does she notice the stinging in her hand. "Huh, when did that happen?"
Maschenko has been moving quite a bit more today, out from under his blankets and back to work. As well as he can, anyway — he's learned pretty darn well to suture with his off-hand, having just finished sewing someone's arm back together. Settled on his heels, he shifts around when the party from downstairs watch starts to filter back in. Seeing people being carried, he gets stiffly up to his feet. "Comrades."
Novikova is carried back, likely by one of the burlier folks. The MG is kept in its usual spot. But for once? Novi is KO'd and pale with blood loss. Kid's holier than swiss cheese in the Vatican. Yeowch. Her eyelids flicker, there's life. But she's either circling the drain or stunned but good.
Yulia's face is white and hard as stone as they troop back in. Elise's bandaging is holding well, but she stumbles a bit from feeling lightheaded. A red stain has seeped its way through the front of her uniform on her chest, and looks like her hand's ripped up again. Her shoulders quickly rise and fall and her face winces in pain as she tries to regain her breath.
Elise makes sure Yulia has a nice comfy spot, "I'll be back to check on you, Comrade Yulia," she promises, before rushing over to her cousin's side. Zoya looks worse now than Elise thought when she checked on her right after the battle, and it scares her. Sweaty cheeks grow pale beneath the grim and bloodstreaks, "Zoyuschka. I'm here. You'll be all right." She'll hold a hand, or arm, or whatever happens to be not sliced to ribbons. "Comrade Doctor?" she calls in a hoarse panic.
Another one of those being carried back would be Karpov, who's out from a wound to the head at the moment. The former footballer is still breathing, at least. So he's not dead yet, it seems.
Maschenko grimaces at the sight of the bloodied soldiers, snatching his satchel up off the floor. "Coming, Elise. Calm down…" Compassion rather than an order, as he quickly reaches out both arms to support Yulia in her stumbling. "I've got you, Yulia. Sit down. I need to see Zoya and Karpov and I'll be right back in just a minute, okay? Just rest."
«Game» It is now dawn.
Novikova is alive, perhaps merely dreaming of shoveling the heck out of the guy who shanked heer. It takes several minutes, her eyes half open. There's no verbal response. But there's /something/. Probably dazed but good. She'll rouse slowly, very, very slowly.
Clutching Maschenko's arm, Yulia coughs her assent and inches towards the nice comfy spot Elise indicated. She sways forward, using a bit too much leverage to sit down, and nearly bonks her head on the wall. Fortunately, she winds up on a curtain-blanket. Could be worse. Yulia settles in but her wide eyes keep watch on the two passed out.
Elise does her best to listen to the doctor, but calm is very far from her right now. At least there's no more shouting. "Sssh. Rest easy, Zoya. Comrade Doctor is coming." She does flick a glance over to Karpov when he's carried in, but right now her attention is focused on her cousin.
Karpov seems to have taken more of a solid hit to the head than a wound, although there's a cut and a bit of blood up there. He's still out of it, though.
Maschenko's unbandaged hand darts forward to protect Yulia's head as she goes forward, helping guide it towards that curtain-blanket as carefully as he might treat an infant's head. A quick look-over of her injuries and, once he's satisfied she's not going to bleed to death while he's triaging, he pulls the blanket over her legs and scoots over towards Novikova. "Elise." His blue eyes look for the German's. "I need some water. There's a canteen behind you, I need you to get it for me." Settled on his knees, he holds his palm near Novikova's nose to check her breathing, then starts unbuttoning her coat. "Zoya, it's Comrade Maschenko. Stay calm and breathe slowly."
Novikova is still blinking. Buh? Eventually it slows a bit, her eyebrows furrowing. She takes a deep breath. She's not staying down if she can help it, though the fellow had fine bayonetwork. She "Huh…" A soft, whispered response. Cousin. Doctor. It registers slowly. She's not struggling and stays there. Her expression is somewhat distant, as if coming down from the moon. There. Those voices. Breathing. Right. Oxygen is good stuff.
Yulia shifts against the wall with fixed gaze on the others. The activity is helping her stay awake. She was already fatigued before everyone got diced up by Nazis, but now her vision is occasionally hazy. Each breath is a stabbing whirr in her lungs, but she is learning to gauge the amount of air she can suck in without much pain. She leans just a bit forward as Novi makes a sound, anxiety in her eyes dimming by a touch.
Elise is slow to meet the doctor's gaze, brown eyes damp and wide with fear. For all the wounds Zoya has taken, she's never seen her like this before. The command nonetheless gets through. "Water, da," she murmurs, and hurries over to get it. A trembling, bloody hand (not her own) unscrews the lid and holds it out to the doctor.
Karpov blinks a little as one eye opens, then closes again. Not much else happens so far, from him.
Maschenko pulls the lapels of Novikova's coat aside, as well as her torn shirt. Medicine is not a profession that can always concern itself with modesty. He takes the canteen from Elise, using the liquid to clear the worst of the welling blood into watery rivulets. From his bag he yanks some fresh gauze, holding it out to Elise. "Wad that up. Press it right here and don't let go." His bloodied finger slashes a diagonal line in the air across the bottom of Novi's chest wound. Whatever he's about to do with the forceps he's picked up is undoubtedly something nobody would really want to watch. But Elise gets to, lucky her.
Novikova would normally protest, but. She sorta got stabbed and there's a trust in comrade Doctor not to have anyone not throw money if they stare? There's still a trust. She nods meekly. Got the wind knocked out of her sails. She's looking vaguely concerned. Or is that vaguely coming to? Hard telling. She's definitely not fighting back or escaping at least, although she winces as water hits. Chilly!
Yulia keeps watching with muted blues, head sinking forward. As they start to work, she turns her attention to the damp bandage on her right hand. She's still listening but doesn't want the visual component for now.
Elise doesn't want to watch, but it doesn't seem like she has any choice. She looks to Zoya's face for a moment. "It's going to be all right, Zoya," she murmurs, and then her eyes seek out Maschenko's, silently pleading for him to make it so. She holds pressure where she's told to.
Karpov is back into uncosciousness, and will probably be so for a long time now.
Maschenko is slightly clumsy with the forceps to start. After a botched try he lifts his bandaged left hand to his mouth and grips part of the cloth with his teeth, ripping it roughly off his healing fingers. One day doctors will faint even thinking about working on a bleeding person with an open wound — right now, worries like that are luxuries. It takes a while of him suturing, sluicing, and suturing again, often needing Elise to get fresh gauze and press down somewhere else to staunch bleeding while he goes along, but finally the injury is closed and the bleeding down to small leaks that bandages will soak up overnight. He glances at Elise, eyes tough to read, then at poor Yulia, then finally at Novikova's face. "Zoya?"
Novikova has watering, half-glazed eyes now. She's feeling some pain that seems to be bringing her around. There's a soft hiss as she grits her teeth. On one hand, she can't blame the Doctor. Pain is nature's way of saying 'stop that. slow down. dude, we just took damage. DO SOMETHING. or we're sick/infected'. But on the other hand, it's pain. If there's any protest, it's just that soft hiss and teeth gritting. "… da?" She answers, softly. It takes a long moment and her eyes are still watering. Well, that brought her around a good deal.
Elise assists as best she can, following Maschenko's directions. But it's not easy for her. Silent tears stain her cheeks, and by the end of it her face is almost as gray as Zoya's. So much blood. Such deep cuts. She manages not to faint, but it's a near thing. Throughout, her lips move, barely-audible German. If Zoya were more with it, she might recognize a soft prayer. The lack of obvious reassurance in Maschenko's gaze at the end frightens her.
Yulia peers back up from her mottled hand, hearing this time for certain Novikova's answer. It may be soft, but it was worth the wait. She strains to sit up again to see, having tipped forward a bit while looking at her bandages.
"All done." Maschenko smiles at Novikova. Crow's feet, prematurely deepened under the pressure of war rather than a lifetime of laughter. "You're still with us." Maybe it takes saying it to convince himself of it. "I know it hurts. I'm going to see if I can find you something. But Elise is here, and Yulia's here - and you, young lady, are going to get some rest."
Novikova looks pained. "'mokay, where's the nazis-" She's a little dazed and half expecting to need to shovel Reizenstein. "Wait…" Wait. If Doctor is poking at her. Groan. Her eyes close a little. "T-thank you," Her voice is hoarse. She's grateful. But dang. World of hurt. She offers a weak smile back after a long moment. "Hey… just like you and comrade Sokolofe…" She manages finally. This seems to amuse her. She looks to Elise, furrowing her eyebrows. She whispers, to spare her voice. "Cousin." She is quiet more often than not for the moment.
Elise gives Zoya a light squeeze, unable to find any words to offer at first. Just that simple gesture. Still looking ashen, she finally speaks to answer Zoya's question. "We got them. I… I'll come right back, I promise." Right this second, she needs to get away from Cousin blood and guts for a moment before she keels over. She gets to her feet, unsteadily.
A wheeze from Yulia's corner, one of relief. She can't see Maschenko's face from this angle, but his words are at least hopeful, even if they took some work to say in the face of her wounds and injuries. "Zoya. She'll be okay?" she looks up and asks Elise, if anything, just have sound confirmation.
"Ah?" Maschenko's mind doesn't process the comparison that Zoya makes. "Don't worry, Zoya. Elise is getting some air, she'll be back, hm? You rest. I'm going right over here…ten feet." He's already getting up, joints all making cracks of protest after the long while crunched into one gnarled position. The doctor scoots back until his back thumps the wall, right near Yulia, and he looks down at the poor girl. "Comrade Yulia." Man. Blood. "…having seen you shoot, I would not like to see the other guy right now."
Novikova just manages a squeeze back if she can. "Okay," She murmurs. A slow nod. She's joined the chest wound club. Though poor Maschenko gets a sympathetic wince hearing his joints. "Oil… poor Doctor," She chortles. Alas, there's no WD-40 for Ukranians. She winces at the chortle. She watches quietly and looks relieved at least /seeing/ the others. Too bad her MG brings all the Nazis to the yard. There's visible relief. After all, her last sight was a bunch of disgruntled Nazis flailing with knives. "Comrade Yulia…" Phew. Now she understands a lot more. She just goes quiet to peer over if she can.
Elise can't give Yulia the confirmation she's seeking. She's too upset, and still afraid for her cousin. She shambles out of the room, to be sick and get some air. And wash her hands and face, at least, even if her uniform is once again a lost cause.
Yulia makes another flinch of a smile, regarding Maschenko beneath half-lidded eyes. "I only learned. from watching you guys." She sort of regrets her newfound skill. It's much more humane to be patching people up rather than gunning them down; sometimes she feels animalistic with that rifle in her hand, only returning to her senses afterward. Probably a common feeling. Well, her hand won't be holding it for a while now, unless her left wants to try. She tilts her head, eyes down at the dried blood on her shirt. "Not much luck tonight. But Elise…" Voice fading, her eyes keep working towards close.
Perhaps it's some deeper irony then that the two medical 'staff' are mirror images now, chest wounds and opposite hands in tatters. Maschenko glances back at Novikova first. "It'll be alright, Zoyenka." Then back to Yulia, pulling his satchel close. "If only we could choose our lessons, I suppose," he says under his breath, bittersweet. "I'm going to have a look at these. Try and relax." Right, relax. He'll do his job, provided she doesn't kick him.
