Marchand looks up and around for any sign of brass stuck on a uniform, or the stride of a commissar from where he's seated. The man's eyes flit from volunteer to volunteer, searching for a familiar face.
There's been rumour for some time of a fresh Nationalist offensive right on the heels of the last one, but in Madrid it all seemed like it was all going on a long way away from here, in any case the XI International hasn't seemed to have been roused into action.
Until today.
New orders come in from Kleber, tellingeverybody to get their acts together asafp, as apparently not only are the Nationalists doing very well, your comrades in the XV International are hard pressed and near routed, and need immediate assistance. Really, it sounds like they needed assistance a few days ago, but it takes a while for the general staff to think these things through apparently…
Vaclav steps in from the west, the last of the company's light machine guns carried across his shoulders. Expression set into a grim frown, the big czech nods curtly in greeting to any who meet his regard. Narrowed blue eyes tick over those present, taking a silent headcount.
Alfred leans up, looking at the Corporal and then nods some before relaxing. While the veteran may look asleep, he's not.
Michael Mehlman notices a new face moving from west, he nods his head and gives a chest salute to him, "Good Evening Comrade. I am Comrade Mike." he says introducing himself.
Konstantinov is here. Where he came from is not entirely clear, but he's among the men. "Comrades!" he booms, to gain the attention of the men. "Assemble! The time for rest is over. The fascists must be routed." That said, he approaches Vaclav, puffed up into what he deems an authoritative stance.
Fritz Yakov Breathes slowly and steadily, with a gentle nod towards the Czech. 'Comrade.' He Says, that is all.
Micah goes to stand in formation, at attention, and raises his fist to salute to Kommissar.
Alfred doesn't grumble, even though he considers it. Standing up he cracks his neck and then wanders over. He salutes, crisp as ever, but his mind is elsewhere.
Marchand gets up as he hears the rumours about Kleber's orders. A final glance around in search of the captain or promoted corporal, even the Kommissar. For now, though, his movement is taking him towards the hitch of the antitank gun. "Allright. They're calling us out to fight alongside the XIVth. That means they'll need all the firepower we can muster." To Alfred, "Comrade, help me move the gun back out to hitch to the tank."
Michael Mehlman walks to the Kommissar and salutes with a fist slamming his chest, he listens the man…
Alfred nods, wandering to assist marchand.
Lind is on her feet. Whatever fever that she had a few days back is now gone, and the exhaustion as well. Some rest was what she needed, that and some food; she's looking like she's ready for a battle as she moves through the milling of fighters. The group she arrived to Spain with has been very decimated, and all spread out amongst other groups. Seeing Vaclav she makes his way to him and simply stands there silently next to him, turning her attention to the commisar as he speaks. Her hand raises in the communist salute.
Fritz Yakov The Vickers was slung one handed over his shoulder, and another hand shot to rapt attention when the Commissar is heard. Feet stanced apart slightly as he stands at attention. Awaiting orders.
Vaclav spares time to give curt aknowledgement to those of his comrades who greet him. As Konstantinov approaches and regards him, the czech gives a curt salute of the closed fist. "O'Callaghan company is ready, Comrade," the big corporal rumbles to the smaller russian. "Awaiting orders."
Marchand starts pulling the Italian antitank gun out with Alfred's help, pushing to lift the wheels from the sunken pit.
Alfred puts his shoulder into it, trying not to pinch fingers and hands.
Micah decides to assist his comrades with the towed gun.
Fritz Yakov noticing the men trying to move the AT gun, he gently places his Vickers down, and then trumbles over, and throws his weight and muscle into it.
Konstantinov issues a raised-fit salute to the troops assembling, doing it in an official and impassioned manner. Have to get the morale up before sending men off to die, and all. "Our troops shall go south, to check the Nationalist tide and keep them from reaching the Madrid-Valencia road," the commissar says to Vaclav. "Position your comrades as you see fit. I shall be there, to observe." That's his main function in battle, it seems. 'Observing.'
Micah stands up, satisfied as the Breda is attached to the rear of the ammunition truck. He looks at the Comrade Corporal for further orders.
Vaclav nods curtly once to Kons, briefly eyeing the motions of the AT gun. "Comrades! Any solider without full combat kit, redress now! All dynamite at hand. Once ready, into Truck! Our bretheran wait in battle! MOVE!" A look given to Marchand, "Comrade Marchand.. Drive truck."
Marchand nods as the men manage to finish getting the weapon hitched to the truck. "I'll drive. But be sure to be ready to leave if we start getting shelled. That truck has no armour, and one hit will blow us to pieces if it's artillery." He starts climbing, opening the door to the cab.
Lind listens with rapt attention, keeping somewhat behind and to Vaclav's left. She shifts her feet a bit, and is obviously waiting for Vaclav to be free for a moment. But she changes her mind at the orders and moves hurriedly towards the truck to get in.
Fritz Yakov Grunts and repositions the Ammo slung about his body before lifting up the Vickers again, making his way into the back of the Truck.
Vaclav voices back, in his deep, staccatto measure, "We dismount before combat. Company! Mount up!" He borrows the absent Irish captain's term for 'get your asses in'..
Micah climbs into the rear of the ammo truck, finds a seat, and stands his rifle up in front of him.
Michael Mehlman nods his head to others and gets inside the Truck
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand calls out, "Load up!"
Fritz Yakov Notice the flare, he scoops it up, and practically bounds into the Truck with a powerful pull and grab of the frame to enter it.
(From Ammo Truck) Micah looks at his comrades who have piled into the large ammo truck.
Vaclav claps his open hand on the back of the driver's cab in a short double rap. "Ready! Move now-"
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand looks around a moment, then nods as he shifts gears to set the rumbling engine in motion, the truck's wheels starting to turn as the vehicle begins to roll.
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand has the vehicle leave the city, the rubble along the roadside showing signs of battle as the road follows the river down towards the flatter land east.
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand calls back, "Where to, comrade corporal?"
Vaclav jolts and jostles along with all the others in the back of the truck, instructing aloud, after another rap on the driver's cab, "Continue south, comrade."
(From Ammo Truck) Konstantinov takes a place imperiously when he enters the vehicle, surveying the troops around him. To make certain they're riding and driving in a properly communist manner.
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand nods his head in the cab, and shifting gears once more, turns the truck to follow the road heading south.
Fritz Yakov Is staring out the back, the Vickers held to the floor with one foot. He was a dull silent man, occasionally sipping from his Canteen, maybe an odd neverous habbit.
(From Ammo Truck) Marchand spots some shelled vehicles at the roadside, and slows the truck to a stop, the hiss of braking.
Vaclav barks aloud, "Dismount! Move, MOVE!"

Lind seems to be determined to keep close to Vaclav. Maybe she's claimed him as her best chance to survive, or there's something else involved. She barely knows him. Soon as the truck stops, she's on her feet and files out after the others, but still makes an attempt to keep on the heels of Vaclav.
Fritz Yakov grabs his Vickers and jumps off the back, Grunting a bit when he lands.
Marchand opens the cab door, stepping out before closing it with a slam behind him. "Okay. Best think of the most likely place tanks will face us, comrade." to Vaclav. "The truck will need to drop that gun off to face them."
Vaclav eyes the lay of the land, nodding once to MArchand's comments. "High ground best. This road to be held open. Infantry take hill-" A motion toward the high ground to the west.. "Fascist tanks probably come along road from further west.. How far Breda shoot?"
Marchand lifts brows in question. "Road to the west, comrade? Where?" He squints looking that way. "I can't see one. The antitank gun will shoot direct fire, aim at what it can see. Not like artillery or a mortar."
Michael Mehlman hrms, "The East of the road looks like a bit higher than the road." he hrms, "We should put the Anti-Tank gun over there." he says giving an advice.
"We pass road in town, back there-" A motion north. "Road run west from town. Hrn.." A short grunt. "What you think, comrade?" He bluntly queries of marchand. No artilleryman, Vaclav isnt above asking advice.
Fritz Yakov Licks his lips slightly, truly wishing he had smoked a cigarette on the way here. 'If I may comrades..I have heard..the best way to penetrate tank armor is from Above..why not place it on the hill..surely it can fire from there ?' He also was thinking of the fact a few HE shells could go a long way in aiding the defense against swarms of Fascist Pigs..
Konstantinov slips out of the truck and promptly takes up a position lurking in the background. As is his custom. He doesn't interfere with the planning between Marchand and Vaclav. He's not really a frontline man himself. But he does lurk over their shoulders.
Lind has nothing to add to the tactics discussion but she's listening closely while checking over her rifle and making sure, once again, that it is fully loaded. She's a silent shadow to Vaclav, close by but managing somehow to be unobtrusive. If he takes a step back, so does she, not giving him an excuse to yell at her for being in the way.
Marchand hrmms, considering. "I'm mainly used to mobilility, tanks and armoured cars." He looks carefully to the line of hills along the road. "Depends on where the enemy's attacking from, but I'd agree that high ground is best. Higher the better, with infantry to support the weapon."
Micah listens as Comrades Marchand and Vaclav continue discussing deployment. He is learning as they confer, taking in what they say and adding it to his databank of military science.
Vaclav nods curtly. "Bring up hill with foot, then. tow by truck, but stop truck in lee of hill. Before get tot top, keep hill for cover from west- Front is west." Turning to the company at large he barks out, "Comrades! Dig in on High ground, west! Move!"
Michael Mehlman Hrms, "The Anti-Tank weapon should be protected by at least 1 Machine gun and 3 Rifleman."
Fritz Yakov Sighs a bit. 'Comrades, I will remain with the Breda, we will not require so many to protect it though. If we place it at the center of our defense line, we can use it to fire shells at any break. I doubt the Fascists will enjoy the explosives it can hurl any more then we would..'
Marchand slowly nods, then turns to start climbing back up into the cab of the truck. "I'll drive her up that packed dirt, following the men. Should be able to drop the gun off there."
Micah wields his rifle at the ready, and looks at the hill that is to the west.
Micah follows the Comrade Corporal, moving westward towards the hill.
Vaclav moves up the hill at a steady jog, weight of the machine gun borne across both shoulders. The top of the hill looms further west, and the corporal spares only the cursory look to make certain the company is keeping up.
Fritz Yakov Glances towards the Fence and looks about, and then towards possible approaches. 'I would suggest we leave range markers..but, it is not likely we have such time..'
Lind adjusts her braid and tucks away some lose strands of hair under a cap she's gotten from somewhere, in an attempt to keep that wild mane of hair tamed for the duration of this. Then she heads on after the others, jogging after Vaclav and making a good enough attempt to keep up with him even if she is soon enough panting; she doesn't have the constitution that some of the men here have, she just has to do her best.
Fritz Yakov Looks towards Vaclav and yells out, just loud enough to be heard. 'Comrade..We should post some one in that cave, if they are quiet enough..they can begin firing into the backs of the Fascists as they pass..' Clearly, he wasn't volunteering him self.
Vaclav barks out curtly, eyeing the ground further west.. "Vickers!" Eyeing the man with the big weapon, "Place in cave. Rest of company! Take cover, now!"
Fritz Yakov Grunts a bit, he had just been volunteered.

Micah looks down of the hill, then across the horizon. Having heard the Corporal's orders, moves for the low stone fence and lies down, steadying his rifle.

(From Ammo Truck) Marchand drives the truck over the grassy slopes, the vehicle taking longer due to travelling off a road.

"Comrade," Lind says, for the first time speaking up, looking up at Vaclav with her chin raised. "I am an expert in assisting anyone using a machine gun. I will stay with you, yes?"

Marchand hops out from the cab once the ammo truck's brakes are set, stepping around in a hurry to the back where the gun is hitched. "Have a pit or position dug in for the gun, comrade?" called over to the corporal and Commissar.
Vaclav turns his harsh blue regard on the scandinavian solider. For a moment he says nothing then simply nods once, frowning still. Looking back to Marchand he nods. "Do it now. Rifles! Moving west, with me. Vickers cover us from there. We fall back to here if hard pressed. Move!"

The ground here in the valley of the Jarama River is covered with short, brittle grass, stretching out in all directions. Too infertile for agriculture, the countryside is littered with stunted shrubs and unchecked brush, and the warm breeze smells strongly of wild thyme.

Lind crawls up next to Vaclav and gets her rifle up, leaning it on some of the rocks. Then she shows that she does know how to aid a machine gunner by lending her assistance on setting it up, should Vaclav want it.
Micah crouchwalks in from the east, having assisted digging in a position for the Breda anti-tank gun. He gets down in a firing position, resting his rifle on top of the low stone fence, and aiming at the horizon.
Jason slowly crawls in from some off apparent direction, his rifle clutched in his arms as he then comes to hide up against the fence. "Lo'. Bit quiet, eh?"
Vaclav sets out the bipod, with Lind's assistance, the scandinavian solider's work enough to recieve no complaints.. a simple rumbled, "Set," when the gun is operational.. As the other soldiers come up be barks, "Behind stones! Front is west!"

Lind moves closer to Vaclav and begins to aid him in unjamming the weapon, once more showing she knows this part. There's a reason she's not shooting anything herself - she's doing more good helping Vaclav. She shoots him a confident look, managing to keep her head cool so far.
Micah notes to Jason, "Damn, that Fascist dog is hard to hit!"

Fritz Yakov The Heavy guns howl out again, making him wince for any one who might be cause in their radius of effect.
Lind is coming in from the west, crouching, crawling, ducking and moving as fast as she can while still taking cover. Her eyes are a bit wide, she's not losing it from fear yet but having to move back took its toll on her nerves now.
Marchand has a badly bleeding hand as he lugs the machine gun down along the fence. The German rifle he'd had earlier is nowhere on him. "My hand. Medic?"

Konstantinov is safely huddled in the cave, not a scratch on him. He doesn't seem displeased about the way the battle's going, either. Until he sees the troops start to pull back. "What is going on over there?" he barks at them.

Lind does as best as she can under the circumstances, but her hands are shaking a lot as she ties that bandage around Vaclav's hand and it's doubtful it's going to aid him much. The only good it does is that she has something to do while waiting, even as she turns her gaze westwards in an attempt to do as asked.

Jason 's form very slowly crawls into the cave, then drops and tumbles into it. He has a bulletwound in his head, but actually seems to be.. Alive. SOmehow.
Marchand speaks, "Can someone move that ammo and grenade in behind the wall, or in the cave? It's out the open, and we'll need it when they press."
Konstantinov peeks out from the relative safety of the cave at the bedraggled, wounded volunteers. "Take heart, comrades!" he booms. "You have made it this far. You are soldiers. You are /communists/. You will not fall to this fascist rabble." Ever helpful with the advice, the commissar.

Micah fails to stop the bleeding with a bandage. He tosses the soiled medical supply to the floor and tries to apply another roll.
Michael Mehlman says "I killed 5 Comrade. I have 32 bullets!"
Jason shouts, "Ten for me, Comrade Corporal!"
Seeing that Vaclav (her hero of choice for some reason) takes out Engel, she turns a broad smile at Marchand. "See? We don't need to hit him either of us," she says and then leans back for a short moment of breathing. She then shakily checks her ammunition. "39 7.92-57 and 16 8mm!" she calls out.

Marchand grits his teeth as he sees the explosion, blood flung about from one memeber of the brigade. He quickly turns, trying to view north.

Marchand nods slowly. "I'm no goot hitting with this machine gun now." He grits his teeth as a new round of artillery shells fall.
Lind is stressed from the shelling. She's shaking somewhat, but even so, she's trying to inspire the others. "Keep steady, brave communists," she calls out. Her voice is inspiring, even as there is a trembling note to it.
Fritz Yakov Swears loudly in Several Langauges, and if it wasn't for the fact he was watching men be pulped, he might have sprinted out in Anger.
Vaclav looks back at Marchand, as the artillery crashes into the breda… "Huh."
Micah ducks as the Breda AT gun is hit, and knocked to the side.
Micah sighs as metal shrapnel fly everywhere.
Marchand manages quietly, "The gun's still able to fire. It's not out yet."
