River Recon South: The Successful Version

Hirsch heads for the front line, such as it is. A shallow ditch somewhere near the road. With the air of a man looking for eager volunteers. The SS are, of course, always eager. Right?

Of course, and Riechter is among the men in the trench, having swapped out his AT rifle for a standard rifle which he is carefully tending to. Never can tell what these Heer pigs do with their weapons.

Siegfried has spent his first hours at the front largely watching and waiting for someone to tell him what to do. His clothes and boots are hardly dirty and a freshly issued rifle outwardly betrays the reality that he's rather fresh here.

Wagner rests in the trench, checking his submachine gun. It's nighttime now, and he's a little more relaxed. The older man leans back a little, about to get a little more comfortable, when he notices his commanding officer. Wagner immediately stands up and slings his submachine gun behind a shoulder, walking up to him. Rather than saluting, he nods a greeting. "Orders, sir?"

Riechter isn't stupid; he's not coming off the line just because the Oberstrumfuhrer walked up… not when there are filthy Poles to be shot. A moment's attention is offered towards the NCO and the CO, though he's listening rather than watching. No point in making it obvious after all.

Fuchs makes his way into the up-front trench, boots polished to a fairly decent shine. Apparently he's been at it this very morning. Still perspiring slightly from the jog up, he wipes at his brow and slides down into the trench and moving in the direction of the SS uniforms.

Jakob wanders into the position, clambering into the trench. He looks a bit puzzled at the SS uniforms, but makes no real connection yet - after all, this IS the right OP. It must be.

Hirsch nods at Wagner. "Perhaps. Volunteers.". Not that anything is all that voluntary when officers come prowling round, mind. "There was a reconaissance conducted last night on the northern side of the enemy held bridge. I hear the Heer made a complete mess of it too, unless alerting half the Polish army was in their orders. Time to check the area around the southern edge. The Poles are undermanned and thinly spread, maybe there are gaps that can be exploited.".

Siegfried peers over the edge of the trench, largely having not seen the CO.. But when the words spoken a few feet behind him reach his ears, the blonde haired boy, as his age was likely much less than those around him, turns back to the officer and NCO standing above the trench, "Sir! Whatever the Fatherland requires, I will volunteer," as if the sudden statement was mechanical.

Riechter is on his feet the instant he hears a request for volunteers, rifle at the ready as he snaps around in a display of sharp SS eagerness. "Herr Scharfuhrer…" he notes, addressing the NCO rather than jumping the command structure. "I will gladly take part."

Apparently not one for too many words, Fuchs simply waits for Wagner to catch his gaze, and gives him a quick nod of ascent when(if) it occurs, indicating his willingness to participate.

Jakob peers around, puzzled. Maybe this /isn't/ the right OP after all. He edges towards Riechter, who looks familiar at any rate, hissing from behind the man, "Hey, isn't this our position? What's happening?"

"These men are enthusiastic to serve the Fatherland," Wagner says to Hirsch, favoring a few of the "volunteers" with a nod—rare acknowledgment and praise from this particular NCO. "I will ensure that this operation is successful." To the men again, "You heard the Obersturmfuhrer. This is recon. There will be no shooting unless we're shot at first, understood? Take ammunition and grenades. No helmets." He scowls.

Hirsch is but a humble lieutenant really, the real CO is off somewhere else, probably at Gods elbow or something. "Oberscharfuhrer Baumann is off duty at the moment?" he asks Wagner, glancing over the trench digging going on with vague distaste. "Apparently this division is advancing comparatively slowly, which will not do, given the reputation we have to live up to." he says in conversational tones at this example of defensive war. "Anyway, enough of helping the Heer dig their hiding places, time to go to war. In Baumanns absence I am sure you will do a good job, Scharfuhrer.". Said to Wagner, who is, after all, das Scharfuhrer. "Stay south of the bridge. There may be Polish supplies hidden in the forests south of the road as well, if so, bring back a report on their position. The Luftwaffe and gunners are both hungry for targets.".

"Sir," Riechter barks, giving a sharp nod at Wagner's orders. He checks his ammunition clips, ensuring he will have enough and bends for a few grenades. To Jakob, he replies; "Recon… the previous attempt was fumbled badly, apparently, we are to report on positions of Polish pi—- forces…" he explains, strapping a few grenades on.

Jakob blinks, glancing around. "You need help? I'm kind of tired of sitting around." Idiot. One of the first rules of being in the military is that YOU NEVER VOLUNTEER FOR ANYTHING.

Fuchs hears the mention of reports for supplies and forces the frown that wants to crawl across his features away. Well, at least -someone- would have some fun. Hearing the orders barked out he quickly snaps to attention, forgoing a salute, and begins to move down the trench in preparation, stooping to pick up a few grenades on his way. He trusted in the NCO to belch forth whatever orders were necessary.

Siegfried reacts reflexively, stripping the helmet from his head and lacing it into his belt, exchanging that headgear for the billed camoflauge patrol cap. Having not yet used his original issue, he deems himself otherwise prepared, but for an additional grenade he retrieves before scrambling from the trench.

"Let's not delay the Heer from getting their intelligence," Wagner mutters to the group, going over to where the rest of his gear is and gathering up the essentials. "All volunteers, come with me," he says, moving east.

Jakob shrugs, following after. He takes off his colourful scarf, stashing it mournfully in a pocket of his coat. He plods along, SMG slung low and to the side, so it doesn't impede his movement.

Siegfried files down along the trench with the rest of the gruppe, rifle slung over his right arm.

As the squad gets closer to the front, Wagner stops and removes his helmet, then his dog tags, which he places inside. He also drops his general purpose toolkit into the foxhole. "Won't be machine guns and radios where we're going… at least, not friendly ones," he comments, smirking. He drops to a knee and peers eastward. "You have a minute to get ready."

Riechter carries his rifle at the ready, having apparently seen enough action to know better than to leave it dangling in the wind. A round is chambered, but the safety left on for now, as he trots along behind Wagner. Game face in place, its hard to say if he's enjoying himself, or loathing every step… such is the stoic face of the Southlander

Jakob doesn't carry extra stuff around, so he just checks the spare magazines for the SMG, tightens straps on his gear and makes sure nothing's jingling. He's not very good with this recon shit, but he IS in an Aufklarer company. So he'd at least heard about it.

"You have your orders. No one fires a shot. Let's go," Wagner says, waving the squad forward.

Fuchs closes his eyes for a moment, focusing his thoughts with a single deep breath. With that done, he leans his rifle forward into a more ready position, opens his eyes, and begins to move forward, his normally sharp steps surprisingly devoid of noise… seems the mud is good for something at least.

Jakob slowly clambers out of the trench, making a token effort to move quietly.

«Ground Combat» Siegfried moves out of Front Line Trench.

Fuchs climbs up out of the trench, sliding along the trees in relative silence. His eyes point eastward, seeking out the dirty Poles.

Staring off into the logging camp, Riechter frowns as he peers. "I see nothing…" he whispers, perhaps a bit disappointed by this fact.

Wagner points at the logging camp to the east. "We'll cut through there, quickly," he hisses. "It looks clear."

Fuchs follows up quickly behind Wagner, the larger man's steps proving enough shadow for his own. This was always where Fuchs excelled, hiding beneath the cover of night, usually to string wire or place explosives… but simple recon is just as good.

Wagner moves to whatever shadows the cabin provides and leans against the wall in a crouch, submachine gun unslung. He glances back to ensure his squad has formed up, and begins advancing eastward, towards the river.

Siegfried stays in step, leaning slightly as he trots along near the rear of the group.

Riechter is no slouch in this either, moving along, at speed, with not a sound to give him away. Rifle still held at the ready, he peers about, apparently trusting the Scharfuhrer with his life…

Without complaint, Riechter wades quietly into the river behind Wagner and Fuchs, careful to keep his weapon above the water line. A cautious gaze is directed eastward ahead of them, just to be certain.

Jakob wades afterwards, cursing quietly to himself as the water gets into his special place. He holds his SMG above his head, not wanting to get the weapon wet too.

Siegfried slides into the water with the rest, rifle kept firmly pressed to his shoulder and just above the waterline.

Wagner points to the east. He mutters to the others. "The road bends up there. A good place for an ambush. Hold here."

«Ground Combat» Wagner moves East <E>.

«Report from Fuchs» Road north is clear.

«Ground Combat» You notice Jakob arrive at Swamp/Marsh.

Riechter spares a glance towards the road, the AT man quite aware of the danger that roads can carry upon them… especially considering the remarkable difference in the weight of this rifle to the one he's use to firing.

"Time to move south," Wagner hisses. He nods to Fuchs to proceed first. Ah, the benefits of command… being able to designate who's on point.

«Ground Combat» You notice Siegfried arrive at Swamp/Marsh.

«Ground Combat» Wladyslaw fires his Karabin wz.98a at Jakob but misses!

Fuchs nods in recognition of the order, and rests his hand against a firm part of the ground they walk on, as if seeking balance before moving on.

Wagner hand-signals for Siegfried to get down. "South, stay low," he mutters. He shoots Jakob a glare and begins crawling.

Fuchs whispers a single-word curse as the Very light goes soaring up into the sky, then glances at Wagner with a quick shake of his head. "East looks clear."

Fuchs tilts his head to the east, his face a question.

Siegfried waits silently for his cues, seemingly unbothered by the sudden light, besides shrinking a bit to make himself a smaller target.

«Ground Combat» You are now peeking into Grass.

Fuchs points to the south, whispering harshly. "Single rifle, entrenched south."

Siegfried :listens to Fuch's word, his muscles tense and excited, but his face blank.

"Doubt this is the gap the Obersturmfuhrer was looking for," Wagner mutters. "I can't see the rifle to the south."

«Game» Fuchs assists Wagner!

«Ground Combat» You look around for hidden targets in your line of sight.

Fuchs points at the trenchline. "Between those two trees, you should see it. Look again." He pauses for a moment before looking around. "We cannot continue south, not unless we get behind the line. Dare we try it and look for a larger hole?"

«Illumination» A Very light burns out.

Fuchs glances over at the stone-faced Sigfried. "East?"

Wagner nods, "I see him now." He gestures with his hand north, then south. "Looks like this trench runs along the river." He nods at Fuchs's suggestion. "Let's move while it's dark."

Fuchs shrugs quickly at Siegfried's question, looks back to the west.

«Ground Combat» You notice Riechter arrive at Forest.

Riechter lets go a breath as he brings up the rear, looking a bit like he's just seen his own grave. "Two in the slit west," he hisses… "Only saw one, but I heard him talking to some one else I couldn't see."

«Ground Combat» You look around for hidden targets in your line of sight.

Fuchs quickly holds up a single hand, apparently a signal for silence as he peers back to the west.

«Ground Combat» You are now peeking into Grass.

Wagner raises his submachine gun and grits his teeth. A lot of good that'll do at this range.

Siegfried glances at Riechter, processing his statement before letting his eyes follow Fuch's.

Fuchs holds up a single finger, indicating he sees only one, and shrugs. "Hold?"

Wagner shakes his head. "Let's continue south."

If nothing's changed since Riechter passed then both ought to still be watching the river. He grunts agreement at the Scharfuhrer, though very aware of the presence of the riflemen by the river.

Wagner points east. "We'll go east through the forest, then south, circling back towards the river."

Fuchs nods quickly, and silently waits for further instructions before moving forwrd to take his usual point position.

Siegfried nods at the squad leader's orders, readying up to move at the others' cue.

"Aye, Herr Scharfuhrer," Riechter replies, snapping a sharp nod at Wagner before dropping low and preparing to move out, his rifle still readied for Poles… Dirty stinking Poles…

Wagner nods and signals Fuchs to move.

Wagner nods. "Let's move before that changes," he says, crawling towards the river.

Riechter is trained well enough to take at face value what he hears from the pointmen. He grunts a bit at Wagner before following after him into the river.
