Armistice Day The German Side

"Armistice Day - The German Side"

Who: German and Allied Forces (guest starring the Mark V tank)
When: Nov. 11, 1918 and thereabouts
Where: The Western Front

What: Armistice Day ends in bloody defeat for the Central Powers.

«Announcement from Death!» I Stood with the Dead, so forsaken and still:
When dawn was grey I stood with the Dead.
And my slow heart said, 'You must kill, you must kill:
'Soldier, soldier, morning is red'.

On the shapes of the slain in their crumpled disgrace
I stared for a while through the thin cold rain…
'O lad that I loved, there is rain on your face,
'And your eyes are blurred and sick like the plain.'

I stood with the Dead … They were dead; they were dead;
My heart and my head beat a march of dismay:
And gusts of the wind came dulled by the guns.
'Fall in!' I shouted; 'Fall in for your pay!'

Bandaged on the arm, leg, stomache and hand, Ewald comes in slowly from the reserve line, pausing every so often to cough, a deathly serious expression on his face. "Gather round, gather round," he calls out.

von Schlesinger arrives from the East.
«Game» von Schlesinger moves into Front Line Trench.

Falk straightens (as much as one can safetly straighten in a trench) from his place along the mucky wall. He gathers near Ewald, as instructed, offering the man a nod and respectful, "Feldwebel." He is careful to avoid wincing, or even looking, at his superior's many, many bandages.

Andreas uis also present in the trench, adjusting his own bandage, before he moves over to where Ewald ordered them to gather round, and stops there, with a bit of a nod.

"The Allies hit us pretty hard yesterday, and there is no reason to expect today to be any diffrent," Ewald says, once he's gotten everyone's attention, "We expect them to begin with a barrage, as usual. As always, be prepared for gas." When Ewald notices the Hauptmann, he stops his little briefing and straightens up, "Sir!" He doesn't salute or call for attention or anything.. that would be inviting a sniper to take a shot at von S of course.

Maximilian nods to Ewald's recount, idly shifting his shoulders to resettle the smg hanging from a shoulder strap under his right arm. Following Ewald's look towatd Von Schlesinger, the young soldier's posture stiffens as well.

von Schlesinger looks deep in thought, and doesn't respond to Ewald for a few moments. He soon snaps out of his reverie, and is back to present though, and heads over to the soldiers at the front. "Still in a fit state to hold the line?" he asks Ewald. "The casualty stations are filled with gas victims." he says a bit morosely, as if clarifying just why he has to ask.

Falk's back stiffens as well when the officer joins their midst. He says nothing, holding his jaw iron-tight shut as his superiors converse. But he does listen closely.

"We'll hold the line sir or make them pay for every inch they take across it," Ewald says, nodding his head a little bit before he begins coughing.. ever so slightly. Damn mustard gas. "May I continue my briefing, sir?"

von Schlesinger nods. "Certainly, Feldwebel. But afterwards, a moment of your time.".

Maximilian remains silent, and still, as the Feldwebel and Hauptmann exchange brief words. Eyes go back to Ewald as the sergeant continues the briefing..

Andreas frowns a bit as he listens, pausing for a few moments as he glances out at the west for a few moments, before looking back to the others again.

"Of course, Sir," Ewald says, nodding his head a little bit more before he address the gathered men, "The wire out there is good. We've paid for that good wire with our sweat and blood and it will hold the enemey for a good while. While they are at the wire.. you will make them pay with all we've got. We stopped them at the wire yesterday.. and I have every confidence in all of you that we will do so again today." He frowns a little bit, "But if they cross that wire, fall back at once to our reserve trench line. We will be blowing the communcation trenchs quickly and you will not have much time."

Falk listens to the briefing with a blankly dutiful expression. Like a good soldier of the Empire.

Andreas nods a bit as he listens, looking rather thoughtful for a few moments.

Maximilian nods once, asking only, "Do we have both machine guns crewed, Feldwebel?"

von Schlesinger stays quiet as the Feldwebel speaks. He did say he'd let him get on with after all.

"From there, we will mount a counter attack and drive them back," Ewald says, "I will be on the Reserve Line, with the 08." He then shakes his head, "We're short a machine gunner."

Maximilian nods again, and goes silent, although a faint grin does begin tugging at the Gefrieter's expression, as he itches at the side of his neck.

"Anything to add, Hauptmann?" Ewald asks, turning towards the Captain.

Falk looks to the officer, his cornflower blue eyes still blank. He will do what he's ordered to do. Though it's very likely to kill him.

von Schlesinger ponders. "Actually it might be best if I simply told the entire unit, rather than just you, Feldwebel.". He looks over the crowd. "The Kaiser has seen fit to end the war. An armistice is being negotiated with the Allies. I am told that efforts were made to arrange an immediate ceasefire to save lives, but that General Foch turned down the request, so for now, we are still at war, until 11am, tomorrow.".

"They will be coming, then," Max notes quietly, eyes flicking aside to the man next to him. "Trying to steal more land before the fighting stops." A breath slowly drawn and let out.

"So we hold them off until tomorrow, and then…" Andreas mutters, a bit thoughtfully.

Falk blinks. And, likely for the first time in a long time, an expression of emotion comes to his face. "The war is ending…?" He breathes it in a whisper that sounds more shocked than anything else.

"And then we go home," Max voices aside to Andreas with a grin. "No foreigner has set foot on german soil this entire war, and that won't change now." As Ewald speaks up, Max- still grinning, nods, "Jawohl, Feldwebel."

von Schlesinger nods. "It is ending. Tomorrow. Unless the armistice negotiations break down.". A pause. "Beyond the order to stand down at 11am tomorrow in the absence of other instructions, I have no more orders for you now. I have not been told myself as to what is happening afterwards. Communications with the High Command are particularly bad at the moment.".

«Announcement from Death!» BTW Austria officially surrendered a week or two before this, though you've not been officially told this fact you might have ICly heard of it from somewhere…

Adolf arrives from the East.

"Thank you sir," Ewald says nodding his head a little bit more, "We will continue to hold this line untill you tell us otherwise." Of course, its troubling that communication with high command is bad.. but Ewald is going to do his best not to think about it.. and to distract the others.. he's going to call for volunteers. "Do I have any volunteers to man the 08-18?"

Adolf walks in singing, there are some people who is throwing eating cans and helmets towards him, but he ignores them completely and happily sings with his terrible voice. He notices Call from Ewald, "Schultz Adolf Dietriech Sir." he says, "I will man the Machine gun." he says in short and not very laud voice.

«Equipment» Maximilian has picked up Stielhandgranate.

von Schlesinger nods, and backs away. "I have some gas casualties to visit. In the meantime, good luck, men. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to serve as your company commander.".

Falk turns his head sharply at Adolf, the sound of singing breaking him out of his reverie. He glares at Adolf but does not say anything, or throw anything, at the soldier. He turns his attention back to von Schlesinger, offering the officer a jerky parting nod in respect.

"Good," Ewald says, nodding his head a little bit at Adolf, before almost saluting the captain. He catches himself. "Thank you sir. It has been an honor." He then looks back at Max, "Weiss, fill the Shutz in on the battle plan, if we're attacked. I'm going back to the reserve line to check the explosives and make other preperations."

Maximilian nods. "If it would'nt draw shots, sir, I'd call for three cheers," he ntoes with a grin to the Hauptmann's declaration of pride. Aside to Ewald, afterwards, he quips, "Oh sure, pass the real work off the the Gefreiter, while you go lie down in the rear," he jokes at the hideously wounded Feldwebel. "Schutz-" he addresses Adolph, "Get the 08/18, and as many bullets as you can carry, and hurry back here."

Andreas is unable to hold back a smile as the Hauptman moves off, nodding a bit, before he looks back towards the front again.

Ewald has left.

As Adolf comes jogging back up to the front, Max affects a grin, and voices, "Long story short: a lot of fellows are coming from that way," he points west, "Who we will shoot a great many times. Once they clear the wire, we move through the trench to the east, and set up to shoot them more. Got it? Once they clear the wire.."

Maximilian is whistling lightly under his breath, glancing up from time to time to note how near it's zenith the sun has creeped. "Must be near 11 by now.." he murmers, between tunes.

«Game» The enemy is near… Mons Front is now a war zone!

Falk is not far from Maximilian, though he's not doing much whistling this morning. "You are a merry one," he observes to Max. In a tone that suggests he, himself, is /not/ merry.

Andreas shrugs a bit as he hears Maximilian's words. "Let's just keep focus for a little while longer, until the war is over and we can go to sleep," he offers a bit lightly.

«Game» Adolf changes his style to GasDefence!

Maximilian shouts, "BUT THE SHELLS LOOK SO PRETTY WHEN THEY EXPLODE!".

Andreas shrugs a bit unable to hold back a chuckle at Maximilian's words. He ducks down, and then glances out there again very briefly. "Looks clear so far," he offers, before he asks, "So, what are you guys going to do after this is over?"

Adolf gulps as the Artillery start falling, he becomes a bit paranoid and falls down also wears his gasmask, the Enemy uses chemical weapons like water, and it is posible they are using right now..

Maximilian does dare to steal a brief look over the lip of the trench, to note, "West looks clear," before ducking back down quickly. A chuckle at Ewald's retort, and he complains, "Hey- how'd he know it was me?"

Andreas shouts, "THAT'S BECAUSE YOU WON'T HAVE HIS GUTS ALL OVER YOU.".

Falk shakes his head at Max. As much as you can shake it, when crouching to avoid being blown up. "I can see nothing to the west," he affirms to Andreas. And, after the latest thunder of the shelling has lessened he replies, "I do not know. Back to Hamburg, I suppose. Diana is waiting there for me, if her letters are to be true."

«Illumination» A Very light goes off over the battlefield!

Andreas shouts something back as he hears the shout from the reserve line, before looking out there for a few moments longer, unable to hold back a grin as he nods, and ducks down again. "Nobody else would make such a comment?" he offers to Maximilian.

Maximilian is cool, and nonplussed, despite the bombardment.. well accustomed to the shells and shrieks. "Sounds good-" he ntoes to Falk, before asking, "Does Diana have a pretty sister?"

Adolf keeps his head down with his mask, "Guys, be careful to the Gas." he says, "The enemy use that alot of times. I dont know if they are using it or not, but be cautious."

Andreas shakes his head a little at the two others. "They don't have any good watches," he offers, before he listens to the others. Shaking his head a little as he hears Adolph's words. "No indication of it yet," he offers.

Falk can't move. A bloody mess, it's impossible to tell whether the German is alive or dead.

«Announcement from Death!» Whistles blow. Cease fire! Cease fire!

Sidney charges in, the wire behind him now full cut into open passages. His rifle's shouldered, something else in his hand as he beelines towards the trench. "Coming fellas!"

Andreas starts just ducking down now, trying to move back to the relative safety of the rear.

«Ground Combat» Sidney moves into Redoubt.

Bruce finds himself locked in mortal kombat with Andreas when the whistles blow. He's badly hosed down too, so isn't in a condition to argue. He slumps to the ground, bleeding profusely from many holes.

Announcement: Afterlife shouts, "Falk has been revived!"
Announcement: Afterlife shouts, "Maximilian has been revived!"

von Schlesinger emerges from the east, looking haggard, but still dignified somehow. His monocle has been polished and is screwed into place, that helps. He heads over to Ewald. "Situation?".

«Game» Falk moves into Redoubt.

Maximilian groans from the grouns, as he hikes himself up to set his bullet torn back against the redoubt wall. A weak cough, as he grins, and notes (with pink teeth), "What he said-" with a motion toward Ewald.

Ewald does his best to hold himself at attention and snap a salute off at von Schlesinger when he enters the fortress.. but in his very perforated condition its hard. "Dire, sir. The allies drove us back to this line before the armitace took effect," he says in German, "They are asking for us to surrender our weapons. I have refused to do so, unless you order such."

von Schlesinger looks over the Canadians, and speaks in heavily accented English. "There is an armistice, yes. My excellent men have obeyed their orders to the letter, and they will obey the armistice terms to the letter as well. There is no need to take their weapons, there will be no breaches of the ceasefire here today, I can assure you.".

Sidney is down in the fortified trench and redoubt, a Webley out and aimed towards those Germans still bearing long arms. The officer with his side arm seems to be given an exception, apparently. "Lower your weapons." but it's in English. No hint the Commonwealth soldier's able to understand the German language.

Falk just lies on the floor of the trench, bleeding and broken, his handsome face twisted by the bullets of the lewis gun. He manages to prop himself upright as the Allies come in. With a groan that's as much wounded pride as pain, he lowers his rifle.

«Game» Falk unwields his Kar98k!

Maximilian raises an arm from where he half-sits, to salute the Hauptmann as well. His right hand still holds the submachine gun, though the weapon is not aimed at the foreigners, presently.

«Game» Ewald unwields his Luger P-08!
«Game» Andreas unwields his Kar98k!

Andreas has seated himself on top of his own rifle now. Looking over at Bruce, who's probably nearby. "You're a tough one," he offers in between deep breaths. Spoken in English, before he looks over at the Hauptman, and salutes the officer, a bit slowly.

William ponders. "Alright. There's been enough trouble today, no need to cause any more." he eventually relents. Reaching up into the tank he pulls out a canteen of coffee, and passes it to… Falk. He looks like he needs it. "You fought grand." he says rather charitably. And then he waves the rest of his men. "Fall back to the line west of here for now!".

Edwin looks dirty after the fierce battle. He was lucky to have escaped the carnage for the most part. He looks back and forth at his comrades and the enemy. It was strange for them to not be shooting each other for a change.

"Permission to see to the wounded, Herr Hauptmann?" Ewald asks, doing his best to keep from coughing up more blood in front of the officer or the Canadians.

Maximilian winces, and grits bloodied teeth as he levers himself up to his feet, still leaning against the redoubt wall, as he regards Ewald. "You look… well," he quips with a forced grin.

Sidney takes a step back from the Germans, looking over to William for just a second with a nod. His eyes quickly return to the enemy troopers, watching them as he responds to his fellow soldier. "John didn't make it." as he starts pulling back, walking up a plank of wood to remove himself from the trench. "They gave us a bang of a time at this bunker." squatting down to help retrieve the fallen Canadian's body, placing the man's shotgun atop his chest.

von Schlesinger nods. "Permission granted, Feldwebel." he replies, and eyes the Canadians with somewhat grudging respect. "Get the worst off to the field hospital.".

Falk just stares at William, a haunted, stunned look in his eyes. He looks to von Schlesinger before numbly taking the canteen and sipping from it. There's a robotic quality to his movements.

Edwin nods to each one of the Canadian victors. Canadians win? Never thought to see the day! He moves on to take a look at his comrades.

William shakes his head at Sidney. "Damned waste. But all things considered I guess the attack went well enough. Shame there even /was/ an attack.". He blinks at the shellshocked Falk, and cracks a forced smile. "Keep it, Fritz. And lets get out of here, Oz.".

Ewald nods his head, and tries his best to look after Andreas' chest, but.. he can barely stand himself and there is no way he's going to get that bandage on there. "Report to the field hospital," he says, before coughing badly into his hands.

Andreas remains seated at the moment, taking a few deep breaths, before he looks over at the fallen Canadian. And then looking back at Falk and Maximilian, "Looks like the girls in Hamburg will have to wait for a little longer," he remarks to them, before nodding at Ewald. "I'll just catch my breath a little…" he mutters.

Sidney has a Combat Engineer's patch on his light brown uniform, wirecutters stuck in his belt from recent use. There's a nod given to William as he and one of the other men start lifting poor John's lifeless body, weapon along with it, to carry the fallen soldier back to the line. "'Bout time" muttered. "Bloke didn't even get a chance to kiss a Belgian girl in bloody Flanders."

Maximilian reaches out and taps Ewals on the back of the shoulder. "Ahem.. Report to the Field Hospital, soldier." In a borrowed tone of authority that brooks no dissent. Slightly hampered by his own pained grin.

Edwin eyes his comrades. "Anyone need help getting to the Field Hospital?" He waits to help.

Falk winces when Andreas mentions the girls in Hamburg. Will Diana still love him, now that Armistice Day has left him a scarred monster of his former self? He just turns to look at Edwin when he offers help to the Field Hospital. He says nothing, but he doesn't look like he's in any condition to get there under his own power.

"I am fine," the Feldwebel says, frowning a little bit at Max before he begins coughing more blood into his hands. When he catches sight of Sidney's wirecutters.. he glares just a little bit. That man better stay away from the wire…

Maximilian eyes Ewald back, and leans a bit closer to voice, lower, "Don't make me call you a liar in front of everyone, old man. You're.. rather leaking. A lot. So before you keel over and need to be dragged by your boots to the field station- and I'll do it too…"

Edwin nods to the beaten up Falk who has caught his eye. No not that way, sickos. He moves over the help support the man back to the Field Hospital.

"Bloody Flanders for sure," Andreas comments, as he uses his rifle to steady himself on, getting to his feet a little bit wobbly. "Looks like we all should go over there," he says, quietly.

"Yeah. Bloody Flanders," Max echoes with a wince as he draws a breath. "Buit however bad this got- at least it didnt happen to Germany, right?" Stepping away from the wall, he slings the smg and winces deeply again. The motion of his arm paining the back muscles and ribs. "Ooooh, that's not good."

Sidney begins the trek back to the Canadian field hospital, he and another man serving as stretcher bearers for a different fallen trooper still alive. His pistol's sheathed now, and silent as he follows the orders to regroup suggested by William.

Falk accepts Edwin's aid and stumbles toward the Field Hospital.

Ewald hacks up one more goblet of blood before he gets back to his feet, "Who ever is un-injuried must stay and man the redoubt," he rasps, "The rest of you.. report to the hospital." He then nods a little bit to Max and starts to hobble that way himself.. but not before saluting the Captain one more time.

Maximilian nods, and offers a slute to echo Ewald's before commenting with a grin, "Some of us, un-injured? Don;t make me laugh, Feldwebel. Truly, dont make me laugh, I think a few ribs are broken.."

Edwin salutes the Hauptmann as he passes by supporting Falk over his left arm.

Falk arrives from the West.

Edwin continues on, through the battered front lines and towards the Field Hospital. "So, did you get hit by the gas yesterday? I still have a few burns from it."

Falk shakes his head. "Nein. I was untouched by the gas…
Falk says that rather bitterly. "So, this is peace…"

Andreas arrives from the West.

Edwin nods to Falk. "Well, how do you feel now that it's over? I fear for the Fatherland. I fear that victory will go to the Allies' brains and strip the Fatherland of its dignity."

Falk blinks at Edwin. "How do I feel…?" He doesn't seem sure how to answer that question. He sighs heavily. "I am tired. As for the Fatherland…it will survive. Nothing can take honor and glory from Germany. Nothing…" But his words have an emptiness to them.

Maximilian arrives from the West.

Edwin nods to Falk, and that seems to calm him down a little. They fought the good fight, at least. He continues onwards to the Field Hospital.

«Announcement from Death!»
Have you forgotten yet?…
For the world's events have rumbled on since those gagged days,
Like traffic checked while at the crossing of city-ways:
And the haunted gap in your mind has filled with thoughts that flow
Like clouds in the lit heaven of life; and you're a man reprieved to go,
Taking your peaceful share of Time, with joy to spare.
But the past is just the same—and War's a bloody game…
Have you forgotten yet?…
Look down, and swear by the slain of the War that you'll never forget.
