O Neill S Letter

O'Neill's Letter… — O'Neill
(This letter arrived at Mr. and Mrs. O'Neill in Alice Springs a while after the Battle of the Nek.)

Dear mother and father

When you read this letter, I'm dead. Sorry about putting it that bluntly, but that's the way it is. Getting shot repeatedly makes a person want to write the letter about his death himself.

Father, I know we didn't always agree on things, but I want you to know I've always respected you and been proud of you. Mother, you've always been there for me, and I'm sorry if I broke your heart by coming here, but it was something I had to do. For me, for the rest of the world, for everything. Just know I've helped keeping my fellow soldiers alive, even if it cost my own in the end.

Remember me.

Your son
Richard
