In Which The Viperous Does Not Really Sink

"In Which the Viperous Does Not (Really) Sink"

When: May 1940 (RL Date: June 18, 2008)
Where: HMS Viperous, the waters around Narvik

What: Some German e-boats come calling on the Viperous and the other British ships. Mayhem and torpedoes ensue.

«Game» It is now night time.

«VSpace» HMS Viperous goes to battle stations!

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «Ground Combat» Pinkerton moves out of Captain.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «Ground Combat» Hands moves out of Main Guns.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton correlates his ever-present reports with the ship's charts, scribbling notes on an overlay of the map. "Mister Pearce, contact the Bridge with an update on repairs," he calls into the tube in a bored tone.

Joanna is at the radar station in the radio room, keeping an eye on the display. She eyes the radar terminal as if half waiting for Germans to come charging out of it. The early destruction in Narvik has heightened her nerves.

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) Hands moves about from gun station to gun station making little notes on a clip board.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce moves into the engine room, surveying the damage. After a moment, he calls out into the tube, "Engineering report: We have damaged searchlights, Generator number 2 is not functioning. Some structural damage to Aft magazine, stern, and engine room."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton mutters curses, scratching at his papers. "Mister Pearce," he says tersely, "might it be shorter if you tell me what /does/ work on this… … vessel?"

Joanna can't help but wince as she hears the damage report from the engineer over the tube traffic. She purses her lips in a fretful sort of way, though the retort from the XO draws a faint smirk.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce murmurs, "I don't quite udnerstand, Mr.Pinkerton. Everything else is functional, barring the depth-charge rail. I'm impressed that they managed to get the systems here in the engine room back in working order in the first place."

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) Hands makes more checks on his clipboard as he has an enlisted man double check the loading mechanism.

Joanna idly glances over the log book from the shift before hers before making a notation of her own. Then, it's back to watching the squiggles on the radar.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton frowns, taking a long, silent few minutes to scratch out a few diagrams. "So you're telling me that aside from having our bare arse sticking out our trousers, we're otherwise fit for duty?" That may be something of an exaggeration of the damage done to the rear half of the ship, but…

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce frowns, staring at the intertube. He carefully speaks into the comm, "Mr.Pinkerton, I am not presently advised about the state of your apparel, but I can assure you that I am fully clothed. The ship should hold; she's not much worse than before." This, in his gloomy voice, does not imply much.

Joanna purses her lips again, this time to stifle a laugh at the back-and-forth about backsides between Pearce and Pinkerton. Despite her best efforts, she can't contain a faint snort.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce mutters, "Mr.Starling, you sound like there is something wrong with your nose. Perhaps you should consult the ship's physician."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton starts transcribing Pearce's assessment, and at length actually reads what he's written down. "I've heard such an assessment from my accountant, Mister Pearce, and it was equally encouraging. Nevertheless, excellent work. See what you can do about the… anything, really. Keep me updated."

Joanna clears her throat when she's addressed, dispelling any further traces of amusement before actually answering. "Just adjusting to the…Nordic air, Mr. Pearce. Quite a change. I'm in perfect health, I assure you."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster has connected.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce says "See that it doesn't get worse, Mr.Starling. I hear they can have some frightful tropical diseases here. And Certainly, Mr.Pinkerton. Not much we can do, but we'll see about it. Mr.Starling could, for one, check the second generator and the searchlights when he's off duty from the radar."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Irvine has connected.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) «Ground Combat» Renteria moves out of Engineer.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton listens to the banter over the comm, smiling faintly. The XO is reconciling reports and charts, making marks on the map overlay and otherwise puttering about. A master at busywork.

Joanna furrows her brow at the comm, mouthing 'Tropical diseases?' to herself. She gives her head a small shake, deciding not to dwell on that just now. "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Pearce. I will take that under advisement. And I will make it a point to put a hand to the generator and the searchlights at the earliest opportunity."

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce is sitting behind his desk, eyeing the intertuve.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) It's Irvine! He's been kicking around, doing puzzles, cleaning and generally trying to keep busy. Poor bastard. He wobbles dangerously as he walks, seeming unfamiliar with the concept of 'staying upright'.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster steps in from the Captain's Cabin, catching the tail end of the comms conversation and arching a brow sharply. Well, while the cat is away and all that. Silently, he moves up toward the Captain's chair, resting his arm across the back of the seat as he stands beside it, looking out toward the other ships visible out the windows.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton catches sight of the Captain and approaches him formally. "Sir, I've just received a report from Mister Pearce. Most of our searchlights are still down, as is generator #2 and the depth charge rails. Apart from this and the damage to most of the aft sections…" He smiles flatly, glancing aside. "… we oughtn't be /that/ much worse for wear than when we left port, for what that's worth."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Irvine loves cats! Too bad he's the furthest thing from them as he does his best not to fall all over himself making his way along from Point A to Point B. He salutes Foster, in passing and smacks his knee loudly on his way. WAHKAAAAANG. Irvine looks pained, his eyes watering and hobbles away.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "'That' much worse?" Foster rebounds, then manages a slight sigh before taking his arm down from the back of the chair and resting it on the railing nearby to hold himself upright. "Well, we'll do what is required." He turns at the sudden sound of Irvine smacking something hard and probably vital against a bulkhead, wincing sympathetically at the man's self-induced injury. "There are rails all about the ship for a reason, sailor."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "Duly noted sir," Irvine smiles weakly, hopping off. He seems to mean it. Poor Irvine, if only someone were to kindly duct tape him to a rail or something- Either way, the ASW guy is wandering to - wherever it is he's needed.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton turns his eyes up and away, nodding sadly to the Captain. He cringes at Irvine's ding, using the distraction to return to his charts and reports. "Mister, ah… Irving, was it?" he calls over his shoulder. "Have a rating bring us some tea up here, yes?"

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «Ground Combat» Irvine moves out of Captain.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "Irvine, yes sir." The midshipman replies. He is off to have them bring up tea to the Captain and first mate. Good times! It'll likely be up in moments.

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) «Ground Combat» Hands moves out of AA gunner.

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) Hands has disconnected.

Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 77 Rng -> 2200 yards 0 knots

Joanna was making another entry in her log when something jerked her attention back to the radar. She blinks, eyes narrowing at it to make sure she's seeing properly, before giving a shout over the comm. "Sir, I'm picking up something. Somethings, as it were. Three new contacts, all bearing about 270 from us and traveling at quite fast at 35-40 knots. They're about 10,000 yards out now."

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce mutters. "30-40 knots is really fast. I woder what that can be."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton transcribes after the first part of Joanna's report. "That's due south, Captain," he translates the bearing. "Forty knots, too slow to be aircraft, too fast for most large ships…"

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "Could be a u-boat maybe?" Irvine offers, looking up. Someone has, by now, brought up tea for Pinkerton and foster.

Radar Contact -> Medium Ship Brg -> 103 Rng -> 1504 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 261 Rng -> 6819 yards 42 knots

Radar Contact -> Small Ship Brg -> 99 Rng -> 2464 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 93 Rng -> 2134 yards 0 knots

Joanna reports again, eyes fixed almost unblinkingly on the radar now, "They're closing fast, sir. All three still approaching us, 6,800, 6,700 and 6,000 yards out respectively, still bearing about 270. They haven't slowed any. Still traveling at 41-48 knots."

You say "41-38, rather."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "A Hugh-boat?!" Pinkerton gasps, turning paler than usual. "That would be surface speed, in that case. Even if it IS night-time," he adds needlesly.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster leans into the comm tubes, and calls out, "Keep an eye on them, Starling." Apparently he's gotten used to the voices of some of the crew, even as they come through the tinny sound. The tea is taken, held in his free hand, but is generally forgotten. "At this distance, it's hard to tell, but even at that distance, they'd be coming in quiet." A pause, a flicker of thought, and the captain is once more calling out orders. "Helm to bearing 2-6-0 degrees." "Bridge to engineering, give me all these engines've got."

Radar Contact -> Medium Ship Brg -> 90 Rng -> 1647 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 270 Rng -> 4584 yards 29 knots

Radar Contact -> Small Ship Brg -> 107 Rng -> 2390 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 109 Rng -> 2178 yards 0 knots

Joanna continues watching the things getting closer and closer, "They're still speeding on. All three near or under 4,000 yards out from us now, bearing still around 260 for the lot of them. They're going at 29-32 knots."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton sets his tea down, almost having sipped it. "Aye-aye, Captain! Helm to Two Six Zero." He sets about changing course, giving orders to the watches and doing some of the manual labour himself. Even stealing a moment to drink his tea.

Radar Contact -> Medium Ship Brg -> 193 Rng -> 1631 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 334 Rng -> 2129 yards 38 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 15 Rng -> 1457 yards 34 knots

Radar Contact -> Unknown Brg -> 206 Rng -> 2340 yards 0 knots
Radar Contact -> Tiny Ship Brg -> 198 Rng -> 2288 yards 0 knots

Joanna reports in as things keep coming, "The three contacts are continuing toward us at to close. All now between 2,600 and 2,100 yards from us, speeds 36-41 knots, bearing 334, 15 and 4, respectively. They're registering as tiny ships on the radar."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster holds the binoculars up to his eyes and spots the patrol boats practically dead ahead. Fast-moving little craft, but they're obviously non-too friendly. "Mr. Irvine, to the main guns, quickly."

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce says "ENgines at full"

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster calls out then, "Helm to bearing 3-4-0 degrees."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «Ground Combat» Irvine moves out of Torpedoes.

Joanna reports again, nearly on top of her last as the latest numbers come in, "Contacts at 1211, 820 and just 296 knots now, sir. Nearly right on top of us. They're still going fast, speeds around 38 knots, on about the same bearing as before. Have you got anything on visual?"

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton changes course, calling out the confirmation. "Bearing Three Four Zero. Sir, if you would prefer to take the helm, I could direct the pom-poms onto the ships as they pass," he offers.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce adds, "10 knots. Our engines are still fairly scuppered."

Joanna tenses as the guns start booming, eyeing the radar console warily. Less to get readings now than to watch for sparking and fire coming from it. She mutters something under her breath. A prayer, perhaps.

There is the quiet booming of naval guns.

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce calls out, "We have anyone extra, I suggest they get to the AA guns, pronto."

(From (HMS Viperous-Engine room) Mr.Pearce adds, "Like I don't think we need radar right now."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "Two of the guns are out of ammunition," Irvine calls, as he fires off a couple of salvos. He's … doing his best though.

Joanna gets back to watching the radar. "They're moving away from us now. Going 36-38 knots. Fast buggers. Bearings 141, 112 and 108. All more than 2,500 yards out now."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton works to turning the ship about, to give a polite attempt at the chase.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Foster then calls out across the comms, "Radar, where are we in relation to the Pyro and Forafric?"

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Irvine is working the guns, although now it looks like he's checking over them.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton keeps the ship on course toward the Pyro and Forafric, the torpedo boats none too interested in slugging it out with the destroyer. "See if you can light up one of those boats with our remaining searchlights, Mister Irvine," he calls out, "at least until we can fire off the starshells."

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) "Yessir," Irvine replies and bolts up to the flying bridge. He skitters, yes, skitters, like Roseanna rushing for a steakhouse up into it.

Joanna eyes the radar again, once she's through with the radio. "Two of the e-boats are still keeping their distance. One's at 4648 yards, bearing 319, the other out at 3126, bearing 156. Speeds 33 and 41 knots respectively." The other they can likely see better than she can, molesting them as it is.

Joanna takes a deep breath, directing her attention away from the guns and explosions outside and to the radar console. Calming in its mechanical coldness, it is. "One of the e-boats is continuing to move off from us. It's more than 7,300 yards out now, going at 39 knots, bearing 133. The other two are still within visual range."

«VSpace» Joanna switches her radar set on.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) The hammerblow resounds through the ship, but is thankfully without secondaries. Just the audible shuddering of the biggest bell anyone aboard the Viperous is liable to have ever heard. "W-was that a hit?" Pinkerton stammers, expecting something far more dramatic—and not really knowing what to expect of a dud.

«Ground Combat» Renteria moves Forward to Command Bridge <CB>.

Radar Contact -> Medium Ship Brg -> 176 Rng -> 7686 yards 0 knots

Radar Contact -> Medium Ship Brg -> 164 Rng -> 7906 yards 0 knots

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «OOC» Conlan says "Is the E-Boat dead?"

«Announcement from Death!» Nope, that E boat survived

«Announcement from Death!» Oh no.

(From (HMS Viperous-Starboard rail) THUD. Irvine is knocked out of his seat, bruising his arm nicely. There's a little bit of cursing, from the starboard guns. But he's back up in a moment.

«Announcement from Death!» it died.

Joanna is frozen for a moment as the shudder resounds throughout the ship. For a moment she just sits where she's fallen, holding her breath, doing some shuddering of her own. But, when she finally manages to get her wits about her again, she gets to her feet and stumbles back to the radar station.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Renteria stopped mid-step as the thud vibrated the walls of the corridor he was in, his hand tight around the rail. He exhales a tense breath as seconds pass and the world doesn't explode into beautiful white light, and carries on his brisk pace.

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) Marisco rises back upright after the dud torpedo hit knocked against the side of the ship at his station. He takes a moment to steady his breathing, then looks off towards the north.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) As the resounding thud rattles the ship, Conlan shakes his head ever so slightly. He reaches in his pocket, and pulls out a pack of cigarettes. Then after placing one to his lips, he lights it, and then moves to pick up a pair of binoculars and look for any further threats. Out over the dark and rolling waters starshells slowly drop from the sky, splashing into the frigid North Atlantic — dying with a loud fizzle. Death has just been barely avoided, but the Destroyer did well — the Gunners especially so with only half of their guns in opperation. "Orders, Captain?"

(From HMS Viperous-Port rail) Marisco comms, "Marisco here. Looks like we're falling behide Instow, she's underway at 16 knots."

«Radio» <Viperous radios> Pyro, Instow, Forafric, anyone else out there. This is the Viperous. We took * torpedo hit but it apparently was a dud. Thank God. How did you lot come through this?

«Radio» <Forafric radios> No damage. Not even the paint!

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton follows Instow's wake, the heavier destroyer running at a slower speed and making a good approximate of the smaller ship's curve. "Now making for our escortees," he announces, "course set to heading 90."
(From HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Conlan comms, "Radio, mind letting the Instow know she's running circles around us, and that she'll have to slow down?"

(From HMS Viperous-Radio room) Joanna comms, "The Pyro's just over 9,000 yards out from us now, sir. Bearing 350. Also, the Forafric reports she suffered no damage during the attack. Not even a scratch on the paint, lucky devils."

Joanna adds to Conlan, "I'll radio the Instow and let them know, sir.

(From HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Conlan comms, "Mr. Marisco, please report to the Bridge, and take over spotting for the main guns. I am going to take a few minutes to inspect our stores. We need to transfer ammo to the rear battery."

(From HMS Viperous-Port rail) Marisco comms, "Aye aye sir"

(From (HMS Viperous-Port rail) «Ground Combat» Marisco moves out of AA gunner.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge)

With that said, the Sub-Lieutenant pulls on his pea-coat, and then places his hat lightly upon his head. He then moves off of the bridge, smoke trailing from his weathered lips, as he heads down to check the weapons stores.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) «Ground Combat» Pinkerton moves out of Helmsman.

(From (HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Marisco steps onto the bridge, heading directly towards the main guns command station.

Joanna keeps her seat at the radar, watching as the ships they're escorting get nearer again. Her hands are still shaking, and she folds them tightly in front of her to stop it.

(From (HMS Viperous-Starboard rail) Irvine is hanging around up above, standing fast. He looks around and hums.

«VSpace» HMS Viperous stands down from battle stations.

(From HMS Viperous-Command bridge) Pinkerton comms, "Radar, can you estimate distance to Pyro and the other? We have HMS Instow at Bearing 120, 910 yards, and Narvik at Bearing 0, 7290 yards."

(From HMS Viperous-Radio room) Joanna comms, "We're just under 7,000 yards out from the Pyro and the other ships, sir. They're stopped still, so it shouldn't take us long to reach them."
