Markus Morgenstern joined the French Foreign Legion before the war. He'd left Frankfurt, Germany, due to some legal problems and joined the Legion as yet another criminal on the run. When the war started, he was among quite a large amount of Germans who found themselves fighting their former countrymen in France and for France.

Markus Morgenstern was made corporal. He survived the war and was field promoted to Lieutenant on Armistice Day in the final attack before the hour of peace. He resides in Arras, France, where he runs a café and bar and he's married with children.
