By the 12th of April the Germans had created a 30 mile breach in the line and were only five miles from Hazebrouck. It was clear the British, with no reserves left, were facing a serious crisis. Haig, demanding French reinforcements, issued the one memorable order he made during the war.

"There must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall, and believing in the justice of our cause, each one of us must fight to the end."
