Final Affairs

Dayne gets his affairs in order. Greenwood wonders if he should do the same.

Dayne pulls open the flap of the Aid Station and moves inside, looking about as he does so.

Greenwood is almost free. Greenwood is gathering his things, preparing to head out for whatever it is a gopher Kiwi does on the front line.

Kathleen is working inside, checking on one of her patients. She smiles at something he says, and then says goodbye as she prepares to move on to someone else. She notices Dayne come in and offers him a friendly nod. "G'Day, Dayne."

Dayne moves in with a different air to him. Calmer, more centered than normal. rifle at his side, he looks to Greenwood, "Greenie, ready to get back to work?" He asks, before nodding to Kathleen, "A moment when you have one, Sister?"

Greenwood even has his shovel! Greenwood looks up and smiles, "Oh yeah. I miss tunneling about, it's kind of weird," He admits. He seems to dislike being shot, but he could tunnel to China at least. He goes quiet as Dayne nods to Kathleen.

Kathleen looks over when Dayne calls attention to Greenwood. "Aye, good to see you back on your feet so soon, Green," she says with a slight smile. "You stay safe in your tunnels there." Back to Dayne, she nods. "Oh, aye, everything all right?"

Dayne nods to Kathleen, "Aye, for the moment. Two things." He pulls out an envelope. "I know you've had these before, but.." He hands it over to Kathleen, "don't send this out till I don't make it back here for you and the other Sisters to tend me, yes? That's one."

… Green smiles back. Beam! Happy times in the tunnels. Green can dig it. He looks a bit grim though, on seeing the letter being handed over. It's cause to pause. "Maybe I should write one of those…"

Kathleen takes the letter with a somber nod, taking care to wipe her hands on her smock first. Last thing anyone needs is a messy farewell letter. "Sure I will. I'll keep it tucked away safe for you." She looks curious as to what the other thing would be. A glance over to Greenwood. "My Ma always said pray for the best but prepare for the worst. If you like, I'll hold onto yours as well." Along with her ever-growing collection, it seems. Word travels fast about Postmistress Campbell.

Dayne glances to Greenwood, nodding, "It's a good idea." He says, then, he looks back to Kathleen, "Second.." He pulls out something else, a copper disk, thick, with a chain on it, leading to a key. The metal is carved, and he holds it to her. "That's for you. It, ah, I never carried it much, thinking it might get flooded with mud or something else, but now, I don't think it's going to do me that much good. you on the other hand, are more likely to get use of it. You know I was a clockmaker. This keeps excellent time, as long as it's kept wound-up." He shrugs, "I'd like to make sure it doesn't get damaged."

"Guess I'll set to writing my next sentry shift," Greenwood comments quietly. He's silent after Dayne hands the gift to Kathleen. Although, he does have to smile. That is sweet. Green can't help but sort of keep his smile in the background and be quiet.

Kathleen gives Greenwood a faint smile at his resolution. Then she reaches out to take the watch, surprised and touched at the same time. "Och, that's sweet of you, aye. Are you sure, though? You don't want to send it back to your family?"

Dayne nods, firmly, "Oh, aye, I'm sure." He laughs, "My family couldn't take another clock from me." He smirks, and nods, "Thank you, Sister." He looks thoughtful, "I feel better." He then looks to Greenwood, "Ready to go?"

Greenwood just smiles at all of this. Aw. Greenwood is a pretty good audience aside from the shuffling of his kit. He bobs his head at Dayne, "When you are." It's apparent Greenwood holds an odd sort of respect for the fellow.

Kathleen smiles then, shifting the watch to the same hand as the letter. "Well 'tis much appreciated. I surely will get good use out of it. Thank you…" something occurs to her and she tilts her head curiously. "Never did tell me your given name. Only 'Dayne'. Would you?" A glance to Greenie to include him should he choose to offer a full introduction.

Dayne pauses, turning to look back to Kathleen, and smiles, "Ah, you're right. Lawrence, Lawrence Dayne." He nods to her and then looks to Greenwood.

Blink. "Oh, I'm Mark Greenwood," Greenwood nods. He was happily being a good audience! He smiles anyway and looks between the two. "But I think Green or Greenie is less of a mouthful for most people," He considers and shrugs.

Kathleen gives a contented nod once the names are passed on. "Lawrence and Greenie it is. You boys take care," she says with a fond smile, not holding them up any longer from the front. Much as she might like to.

Dayne chuckles, then turns to Greenwood, "Let's go, we can stop at the Trench for some paper and a pencil or something."

"Don't work too hard yourself," Greenwood points out, likely a little more aware of the horrors of being shot and cooped up in the tent after. He smiles back politely and turns to Dayne. "Okay. Sounds like a plan."

Dayne nods, and moves on out.
