Dying At Helles

Pastures

The Grid-----> > > > > THE LOST GENERATION < < <

Coordinates : 1 3

The rolling terrain of Cape Helles is quite uneven, but compared to the boulder strewn wilderness of Anzac relatively forgiving. The ground is covered with lush green grass with the odd tree or bush to break up the landscape. Some areas are even given over to farmland.

It is currently daytime.

«Game» The enemy is near… Cape Helles is now a war zone!

Its May 8th, 1915. You've been sent down to the other front on Gallipoli at Helles, where your battalion has been kept in reserve while the Brits and French have been trying to push forward and capture the hill of Achi Baba, which rears up like some great slumbering giant several miles to the east. Apparently the first day went badly, because you've been ordered forward. Captain Pierce is leading the company through the trench lines to the front.

Cross has his place in the formation and today its the middle. A pretty safe place in the order of things when it came to bullets, different story when it came to artillery. The man walks through the trenches hoping there would be little of that on the menu for today.

David is making his way down with the others, giving his rifle an extra check as he walks. Keeping silent for the moment.

Agbesi treads along, singing softly to himself. The black man looks upbeat and unconcerned about the coming offensive. Then again, the West African /always/ looks upbeat and unconcerned.

Alistair goes up and down the line, seeing to the soldiers. He talks, laughs and jokes quietly. He takes questions and offers what little help he can for the hundreds of little issues that arise with extended service in an era without sterile equipment. Alistair doesn't seem to concerned that they're about to go into battle again.

Tanner is milling about with the force of Anzacs that've been shipped over. Medical bag over his shoulder. He's toward the back of the formation, Red Cross stretchers in easy reach. That doesn't seem to put him at ease, though. He checks his bag for what must be the dozenth time, counting supplies. The number of medic toys at his disposal suddenly seems depressingly low.

One thing is clear, the previous days attacks must have been quite dismal, because when you finally get to the very front line, its one of your own trenches rather than a Turkish one. There are a few rather sullen looking British soldiers here, who studiously ignore you as you spread out down the trench, lining up.

White is dragging his feet around somewhere in the middle of the formation, keeping his eye down to avoid the worst, and to maybe to block out the rest of the world for a short moment.

Agbesi offers cheerful greetings to the British soldiers, ignoring the sullenness and the lack of replies. "Bonjour! Salute! Hello mes amis. We are here to help the Anglais, eh?"

Alistair 's attitude drops lightly when his eyes come across the English soldiers. Then there is one he recognizes, "Oy! Hamilton!" An old friend from London - a bloke that Alistair hasn't seen in years. "You old git, what the hell are you doing here? Hows Rachel and the kids?"

Pete sighs as he walks behind Agbesi, who's offering a hello to everybody there. "Agbesi, control yourself." He mutters. He keeps his head down, trying to seem like a nobody. His Jacket is covered in sand and his top button is open, letting the air fill through.

Tanner tries to offer a grin to the British soldiers as well but, when he catches a steady look from one of them, he stops all efforts to make eye contact. He goes back to rummaging through his medical satchel. Rummage, rummage, rummage. Occasional glances are directed up toward Captain Pierce. He tries to keep the increasing feeling of dread at bay, swallowing hard.

Cross knows better than to strike up any conversations with the british soldiers. Probably best to just leave them alone and focus on the task at hand. The soldier unslings his rifle as he arrives at the front and looks over his shoulder at the line of soldiers behind him probably wishing he had been back there with them.

Agbesi ignores Pete as we, settling into the trench. He hums cheerfully, peering up at the hill.

Young has been busy helping get the medics loaded up with their supplies, and securing the area where the poor wounded sods will be brought back to bleed. He crushes a spent cigarette under his heel.

David shakes his head a little bit, glancing over at Alistair and the person he was talking with, before he looks out there again, shrugging a bit to himself.

One of the Tommies Agbesi greets shakes his head a bit. "Best of luck, mate. You're going to need it if you're going that way." he replies. "They sent us over yesterday.". The rest are studiously and unrepentantly sullen, merely watching the next batch as they get ready to go.

Somewhere to the east, up on Achi Baba, a German advisor armed with field glasses is eying this very trench line. He passes some 'suggestions' to the Turkish commander. 'Looks like they might be trying again today… send word to the gunners!'.

Agbesi nods to the Brit who adressed him, still cheerful, "Maybe God will keep me alive like he has kept you alive. Bonne chance."

Alistair gives Hamilton a quick shake of the hand and then uncharacteristically hugs the man. "Will see you on the other side mate, promise." The Combat medic lifts his rifle up and continues on with the rest of the soldiers. Alistair is more experienced than the day he landed at Gallipoli, by no means invulnerable to artillery and machinegun fire, but he knows not to dwell on the terrors that they are about to face. It is far easier to ignore it until he finds himself in the crosshairs of a gunner. If he survives this fight, he'll be a better soldier and medic for it. Alistair takes a deep breath and prepares to join battle.

White looks up at the sky and then to Agbesi, "Better hope for God, that black hide of yours won't help you here under the sun. Maybe the glare from your teeth will."

Pierce spends a few moments checking down the line, and passes on some orders via his lieutenants to the men. "Apparently the Turks have this trench under observation and yesterdays assault was broken up by enemy artillery. We've been ordered to try again, and the Turkish positions have been shelled all night, but we'll need to press on as quickly as we can. The Turk trenches are quite some distance to our east, there is some open ground we'll have to cross to get there. So I want everybody moving double time. The objective is the main line of Turk trenches directly east, beyond the gully.". The orders are repeated several times, so everybody gets the message.

Kwatra Kwatra brings up the rear of the group. He mumbles a quick prayer to himself in Urdu, looking forward at the lines and gritting his teeth as an officer speaks, and adjusts his grip on his rifle

Agbesi grins at White, revealing a mouthful of, indeed, shining white teeth. "Bien sur, mon ami. I have my bullet charm. With that and help of God I will live, maybe." The black man pats a little bulge in his coat, over his stomach.

Tanner looks over at Alistair's interaction with the British soldier, cracking a faint grin. Very faint. He's not in a smiling mood today. He exchanges a look with Young, offering the doctor a shaky nod, but nothing verbal. He looks ahead, toward the hill. Another shaky nod is given to the captain's words.

Young remains in the back, sitting down on a crate to dig through some errant medical supplies. A bottle of clear liquid, unmarked. Ripped gauze packs, splattered with mud. Syrings, half with their needles broken. He can hear Pierce giving orders to those going over, but he only listens with half an ear while he works.

«Game» Kwatra changes his style to Sprint!
«Game» Agbesi changes his style to Sprint!

White unslings and grips his rifle, as it is starting to sound the time is here.

«Game» White changes his style to Sprint!
«Game» Pete changes his style to Sprint!
«Game» Tanner changes his style to Sprint!

The order comes. "Company, prepare to advance!" is shouted by NCOs, and the men shuffle forward, to the ladders.

Agbesi shift on the firing step, fixing the bayonet onto his British rifle.

Kwatra As he peers to the east Kwatra grins faintly, he mutter, in english this time "Once more unto the breach…" He chuckles at some private joke and shakes his head as he steps forward to the ladder.

Cross doesn't hear the command from the Captain but a filtered version of it from one the Corporals. The Private responds, "Got it. Charge the trench, shoot and stab anything not wearing the same uniform as me." Pvt Cross slings his rifle over a shoulder and forms in line at one of the latters. The man lets out a gently sigh that performs a quiet prayer to himself.

Young looks up as the assault team gets ready to go. He stands up, wrapping a roll of bandages in his hands, and watches in silence.

As soon as he throws White free, Alistair turns his head to face the enemy trenches. He's spots Agbesi take a fatal shot in the leg and then spots another soldier go down injured. For a moment the Combat Medic stands there petrified in horror. Alistair is frozen with his mouth frozen in terror. Just as he is about to gather his courage and help the next man, a shell lands right in his lap. The englishman lets out a terrible Wilhelm scream and goes ass over tit.

Agbesi crawls away painfully slowly, a bullet having severely mangled his leg. He still sings to himself, albeit at a fevered pitch, as he crawls through the scattered remains of his friends.

Alistair wipes the blood from his eyes and wastes no time in jogging towards the aid station. He dives in and begins to help in whatever way he can. Still covered in the red wetness of fellow soldiers he looks at Young, "Doc - how can I help?"

Kwatra groans and blinks, some luckier soldier had dragged him to the top of the trench while he was out of it and he has managed to roll down to the muddy floor of the trench. He lies there the gashes on both his arms enlarged bu the ordeal and his torso bleeding. He promptly passes out again.

Chaos reigns in the trenches. The British survivors of the massacre a couple of days ago are no help, and the officers have suffered even worse than the other ranks, as they were leading the charge. If theres a chain of command it seems to be missing a few links. There are plenty of wounded to deal with, nevertheless.

White finally makes it out of the ravine and into the trenches, the trip to visit Abdul was a lot quicker then the journey back home.

Young looks up at Alistair, glancing the man over. Still walking, that's good enough for now. "Get everyone bandaged as you can, Lydgate, and into the tents." His hands are pressed on Agbesi's leg, but the bleeding just continues.

Tanner finally manages to recover himself enough to wander over to Young. He nods at Alistair's question, an offer of his help as well, though he's beyond actually speaking now.

Walsh waves the wounded White in, to where the doctor, Young, has a makeshift medic station set up in the field. "Over here." as he tries to make out the fellow's wounds.

«Medic Code» Alistair successfully performs first aid on White!

"Tanner," Young spots the other medic and points to White and Walsh. "Go take care of White."

Agbesi grins from White to the soldier who had adressed him before, gasping, "See? With help of God and fetish, I am still alive?"

Cross was somehow one of the lucky ones. His face covered in blood with a large lasciration to his forhead. The injury had knocked the man unconscinces near the Turkish lines. When he came to moments later, perhaps the Turks felt sorry for him or maybe there were more pressing targets for their machine guns. With a guardian angle over his shoulder the man manged to low crawl back to the British lines.

Walsh nods to the doctor, "Yes, sir." He's got his little personal aid kit, suitable simply for first aid bandaging. With that he steps to approach towards White.

Tanner nods numbly, fumbling with his medical supplies and approaching White. "My God…" he gasps at the damage to the man's arms.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Alistair is already there, applying pressure to White's chest. "Work on his hand, Tan. Make sure it's all still here."

Joseph has been called up to the front lines. He's shaking. He lets out a howl as the artillery comes crashing down infront of the Trench. He ducks down into the trench next to Agbesi and shakes. He seems a bit young, and very scared.

Young stays with Agbesi as the others care for White. The sounds of screaming and pain grow ever louder as more stream from the bloody trenches back to home.

«Medic Code» Walsh attempts first aid on White but fails.

Kwatra is woken by an ANZAC boot on his wound, he groans again, he's been doing a lot of that recently. He tries to sit up agaisnt the trench wall, out of the way. After the first few attempts he manages to push himself up. His arms hanging uselessly by his side.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Walsh tries to wrap White's hand in a bandage, but with the inexperience of the non-medic, it simply slows the bleeding rather than stopping it.

White looks back at Agbesi, "God and fetish? For me it was all luck and a medic." He looks at the medics through dim eyes, "I'm pretty sure it is still there, else I don't know what I used to get back here."

«Medic Code» Tanner attempts first aid on White but fails.

Tanner applies pressure to White's right arm, but it does little to actually help the injury. He gets it wrapped. A proper doctor can look at it later.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Agbesi smiles gratefully to Young as the man bandages his chest. "Merci… Thank you, Anglais." The black man glances at White, offering him a wordless, bloodstained grin. Despite his friends being shot, despite being covered in holes, he's still alive.

A British officer bustles down the communication trench to the front, batman close at hand. He looks a bit surprised at the trench swarming with Aussies, who are supposed to be over in the Turkish lines. "Who is in charge here?" he asks, looking around for a convict with pips.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

"Stop calling me Anglais or I'll stick this needle right in your eye," Young says to Agbesi, without a shred of real venom. "Hold still, you're going to be alright."

Walsh frowns, leaning to ask White, "Want me to try patching the arm, or would ya rather wait for a real medic?" He tries to look around to spot one that's not already busy with Agbesi.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Cross crawls to the brim of the trench and gets pulled in with some assitance from a British soldier. Cross falls into the trnech with a bit of a thud and his breath knocked out of him. Gasping for breath, the man slowly starts to get his breathing under control. Still in a complete daze from his head injury, the solider just slumps up against the wall at a complet loss of what is happening around him.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Joseph looks around at all the wounded. He slings his rifle over his shoulder and crawls over to where Young is. "Oy, Doc. I've got some skill in first aid. Where can I help?" He flattens himself against the floor of the trench as the Artillery continues to pound near by.

Agbesi shakes his head at Young. "I not believe you. You okay, Anglais." The black man blinks as the officer comes strolling in. "Quoi? Moi, I am in charge of the French troops." The black man giggles to himself, slightly delirious.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Walsh turns to Agbesi as Tanner takes White to treat. "Pas d'Anglais, Agbesi. Australian."

The officer eyes the man of colour, but doesn't dignify him with a response.

A /French/ man of colour at that.

Young looks up at Joseph and motions him over with a tilt of his head. "Get more gauze and keep pressure on this man's chest," he says, referring to the bleeding Agbesi. His hands have a bandage on the man, soaked in blood. He twists and calls to the other medics. "Lydgate, Tanner! How's he doing over there?"

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

Kwatra , now that he can lean his arms agaisnt the trench wall, and the boots of his allies are only tripping over his unwounded legs, the pain isn't so all encompasing. instead he winces at the sound of not to far of shells.

Tanner looks numbly up from his efforts as the British officer comes in. He wipes his bloodied hands on his uniform, offering a shrug to Young. "I think he needs more care than I'm learned in, Doctor."

Alistair pats White, unable to do anymore. The young and minorly injured combat medic moves on to other injured med. "He's not in danger of dying. But Doc you've got to look at his arm - I don't know if he'll.." Alistair falls silent and just keeps on moving.

«Artillery» You hear artillery pounding Gully Ravine (2 3).

"Aust-ra-lian. Oui oui, you are the Anglais from Aust-ra-lia, bien sur?" Agbesi looks a little disappointed as the officer ignores him. Damn. There go his hopes of promotion.

White lifts his head up to look out to the east and the arty still flying around, "Enough already" he tries to shout, but now it's just a hiss, "Nobody out there is alive anymore."

The sound of the artillery pouding in the distance causes Cross to jerk at every thunderous boom. The soldier appears to be struggling with a lot of emotional damage…defenitly a low priority compared to the soldiers bleeding out to death in the trench all around him.

Walsh resumes his injured reserve duty of keeping watch for any Turks breaking through from the east. "Shelling's still going, but Mehmet's not advancing."

Joseph moves over to the wounded man, winceing. He applies pressure to the wound and tries to clean it up the best he can. "Christ…" He throws his body over the wounded man, covering him from the debris that the artillery uplifts. "I assume I missed the charge?" He shouts over the artillery to nobody in particular.

"You think?" Young mutters at Joseph. He lets the younger man keep up the pressure on Agbesi's chest and sits back on his heels, grabbing up a syringe and a tiny, mudspattered bottle.

Kwatra decides its time for another prayer, despite the thumping of artillery, he prays in the proper arabic, if anyone notices or understands it is a Surah, the first that came to his mind, its a short one but he is frequantly interupted by the falling of the shells so it gets dragged out a while.

Tanner moves onto the next wounded man, still white-faced and wide-eyed with horror.

«Announcement from Death!»
'Good-morning; good-morning!' the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead,
And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
'He's a cheery old card,' grunted Harry to Jack
As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack…
But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

"You're going to feel a sting. Hold still." Young mutters to Agbesi, in French, before he slides the syringe into the man's arm. The aforementioned sting is no doubt lost in the greater pain. His thumb pushes down on the back of the needle, injecting the liquid slowly.

Cross hears another explosion and nearly jumps into the air. The soldier scoots back up against the back wall of the trench and brings his knees into his chest with his arms wrapped around them. This was nothing like he had ever seen before and it was nearly enough to break the man. Trying to keep his sanity in check and prevent a nervous break down he just keeps to himself trying to cope with he had just somehow survived. The big question of 'Why he survied and so many others didn't' runs over and over in his head like a broken record.

Tanner flinches at the continued shelling, his shoulders shaking. He clenches and unclenches his hands, trying to stop the worst of the shaking. It can't be very encouraging to the wounded men he's trying to sew on.

The officer isn't seeing anybody who is actually in charge, only medics and wounded men. He heads over to Walsh, as he looks like he's got his senses and is mostly standing around idle. "If you could pass a message to your commander - General Hunter Weston is expecting a report on the action by this evening.". He eyes the medics. "We'll need a report on casualties as well." he adds on his own initiative.

Agbesi indeed doesn't stir as the needle goes into his arm - he doesn't even seem to notice. The black curiously follows Walsh and the officer with his eyes.

Kwatra 's muttered verse suddenly comes to a halt. Suddenly realising he is unarmed, Kwatra looks around. Fortunately another soldier has left a rifle propped up on the trench wall not to far away. Gritting his teeth he uses his gashed left arm to knock the weapon onto his lap. He sighs as it falls across his legs, but its not as if he'll be fit to use it anytime soon.

White once again lifts his head up, but this time to look at the officer. "We got shot up and shredded to bits, but it is hard to explain. Maybe you can tell this general to join the next attack so he can see for himself what went wrong."

Walsh looks up to the officer, blinkin as the young man doesn't expect to be addressed by one. "Report on casualties, and tell the C.O. that General Hunter Weston is expecting an AAR. Yes, sir!" without adding a salute.

Agbesi glances at White, brows drawing low. He hisses, "Careful! Les grandes seigneurs, they not like talk like that. Shame to survive only to be shot, non?"

The officer eyes White. A convict, talking like a convict. He chooses not to say anything - he's not of the Anzac formation after all - but makes a mental note. He then nods at Walsh. "Carry on, soldier." he tells him, shaking his head as he turns to one side. It is obvious why the attack failed, he thinks as he leaves - discipline, or lack thereof.

Joseph moves away from Agbesi as he becomes better. He grabs a clipboard and moves over to the bodies. He looks at the first one with a grimace. He kneels over and checks the dog tag. Richard Louise. He writes down. He moves to another. Matthew Burke. Another. John Lewis. He moves to another man. He checks the dogtags. "Stein, Pete." He mutters aloud. He writes down the name and begins to move when he spots something in the dead man's hand. "Whats this?" He moves over and pulls it out. It's a letter home. Joseph tucks it into his pocket and moves on down the line, checking the dog tag and writeing down the name.

Alistair sits weakly and nods. "Aye sir. I'll write up a list of the injured and wounded."

Walsh stays motionless for just a moment later, waiting till the British officer has stepped away. Turning to crouch back down again, the Norfolk Islander squints to try to make out the faces of any of the ANZAC NCOs that might be nearby, or perhaps the Captain or Lieutenant himself. He passes word down, "Got a message for the Captain." through the line of shocked and wounded ANZAC troopers.

With the sounds of the artillery shifting to other sections of the battlefield has allowed Cross to collect himself a little more then the mess he was just moments ago. Still slightly dazed from the head injury, the soldier manages to stand up on his two feet and look about the trench. He tries to ignor the sound of the wounded soldiers and the bloody messes around him. His arm goes to his brow to wipe away some of the blood that has managed to dry up…some of it his and some of it from those probably still out there over the top.

Young ignores all the exchanges between his countrymen and the British officers. Hands covered in blood that's becoming sticky and thick, he wipes them off on a dirty towel and continues on. "Stay still," he tells Agbesi, and calls for a stretcher bearer to come move the man into a tent when he can be better sewn up later.

David has been all out of it since he was brought back with the others. Patched up, at least in the most basic ways, he now opens his eyes, blinking a little as he glances around. "Live…" he mutters, most of his view still of what's above.
"The captain is… Back there." Agbesi reaches to point at the trenchline, but stops as he's commanded to stay still.

Kwatra passes the message on to the soldier nearest him before falling again into a daze of pain.

Walsh turns to look forward towards the Turk as Agbesi motions that way. He waits a moment, staring that way, but instead of dashing forward just crouches back down.

Agbesi catches Walsh's eyes, shaking his head. He doesn't say anything, but the meaning is clear.

Alistair turns his attention to the east suddenly. There's no way they're going to counter attack after slaughtered an entire charge.

Tanner looks up again, his own gaze turning east. He just stares with those lost, widened eyes.

Walsh says quietly in French, the rough French as a sailor might learn in New Calendonia, "He didn't make it, no?" asked of Agbesi.

"He is with God now." Agbesi offers Walsh a smile, touching the crucifix at his next with his unwounded hand.

David mutters something more, as he tries getting up, at least into a sitting position. Grimacing quite a bit, but he doesn't give up yet.

Kwatra coming back into reality, Kwatra catches the eyes of some of his comrades. He doesn't know exactly who they're looking out at but he gets the general message, his head slumps in sorrow, praying for one unknown man among all the dead and wounded.

Walsh slowly nods, turning to stare away in another direction with his eyes as the French Colonial affirms. He goes quiet now, gnawing his teeth together as the barrage disperses up the line.
