Underwood Kills Some Brits Linking Up With Armour

"Ohhhh… that. Yessir," Vaucanson replies to Rupert, and goes to gingerly peer over the edge of the trench. He mutters under his breath, "Nope. Don't see the German army just yet."

Devon accepts the papers back, evidentally knowing he'll have to make a trip to the command tent to hand them over to some aide for filing away with all the other paperwork. Hearing Wallace's words from further down, and the comments and questions spoken with a lighter air by the English foot soldier nearby, he keeps quiet now and lets his eyes look over towards the east for his own view.

"Well keep looking, private." Rupert sounds a little testy, the tense situation having placed him in less than perfect humour. Apparently, he thinks Vaucanson is Being Smart with him, a capital offense for an enlisted man. The Lt offers a nod to Wallace, murmuring, "Sergeant."

Vaucanson is most likely Being Smart, but he has the good sense to just nod back, offering a polite 'yessir' and continue peering through the trees.

Wallace moves up toward Rupert and hands the man a clipboard with a paper attached to it. "The inventory you wanted." His eyes slide back and forth between the LT and Vaucanson, trying to figure out if he actually missed something, but eventually his gaze moves back to Rupert. "Everything in order here, sir?"

Underwood is dragging his feet as he makes his way down the trench, stopping to adjust some of his equipment, and maybe mess up the inventory at the same time.

«Equipment» Underwood has dropped M68 AT Grenade.
«Equipment» Underwood has picked up Mills Bomb.

Rupert nods to Wallace, accepting the clipboard. He eyes it, but doesn't seem to be paying much attention; something is clearly weighing on him. "Looks fine. Everything is perfectly in order, sergeant." He adds, almost to himself, "Well, considering the circumstances, anyway." He glances up, somewhat surprised to see Underwood South of his Northern stronghold.

Devon has his rifle in hand, outfitted the same as most of the men despite the field gun qualifications. He takes another look up towards the north, frowning as he sees the 2-pdr's positioning. Continuing to remain quiet, the man listens as he begins to gauge the personalities in this squad.

Vaucanson yawns hugely when he thinks Rupert isn't looking and rubs at his eyes with the back of his wrist. He's clearly eavesdropping, although he at least keeps doesn't glance away from his lookout.

Wallace nods to that, then looks over Rupert's shoulder toward the north, lowering his voice. "And the others?"

Underwood isn't doing much else then grabbing a Mills, putting down the M68 with the others before he crouches down to go through his ammo supply.

"Fine, I'm sure. They're brave lads." Rupert still sounds rather absent-minded, as if his mind was partly elsewhere. "Besides, I ought to be asking you that, sergeant. I've been nursing my legs in the hospital, so I've been rather cut off from the Platoon until just now. Well, except for him. Eyes, private Vaucanson. Use them while you have them." He shoots a not unkindly Look at Vaucanson.

Devon takes a moment to doublecheck his own ammo supply. The clips all look fresh from the crate, as if in the field before he'd never had to use the rifle.

Huhwhat? Vaucanson straightenis his posture. "Yes sir!" he replies to Rupert, and has to physically stop himself from saluting out of reflex.

Wallace actually crooks a grin. "You're right, on both accounts. With the exception of a few." He slowly turns his gaze toward Vaucanson, mentally making a note of the soldier before looking back Rupert. He doesn't actually look Devon's way, but it's obvious who his next statement is about. "Who's the new one?"

"Private Manitowabi, goes by 'Dev'. Private Manitowabi is a red indian." There is no mockery about Rupert's tone, the words adressed to Wallace quite serious. "He's been transferred from the field artillery after his gun crew got strafed by a Hunn plane. I imagine he's qualified to use the AT gun."

«Announcement from Death!» So how many soldiers have we got?

Underwood grabs some extra ammo while he's at it, mostly trying to stall while eavesdropping on the conversation.

Wait, why did Wallace just give him a look like he's making a note of his face? That's never a good sign. Vaucanson glances back over his shoulder and looks wary for a few seconds, then eyeballs the trees.

Devon directs his eyes back to the officer and NCO speaking as he hears his name. "Qualified for a Stokes, 2-pounder, and 18-pound field gun." muttered, offering the piece of info in case there was attention his way.

Wallace nods. "Good, we'll need him." With that, he turns toward Devon and gives the man a quick nod. "Welcome to the squad. Hope you're not too fond of your ability to hear" Wallace quips… the man is an artilleryman after all.

Devon nods to the sergeant, a gruff smile appearing for a moment as he reaches into his pack and draws out the gunnery-man's earplugs and earmuffs. "Let the Germans hear it."

Roux shuffles along, picking up a grenade from the supplies. He doesn't look too thrilled about this. But after a moment, his face brightens. "Has anyone seen Private Becker?" He asks quietly, in French.

Rupert apparently is a little more alert than he seems, calling out in French without looking up, "We have no Private Becker in this plate, private. We do, however, have a Corporal Becker. Who is in hospital nursing winded hand."

"Truly? I will have to congratulate him, but ah," Roux seems crestfallen. He must miss his friend. He nods, and salutes. "Thank you sir!" He straightens and gets to cleaning his gun.

Lyon makes his way into the reserve trench, big medical bag slung over his shoulder instead of a rifle. Not that the hog's-leg on his hip suggests he's unwilling to fight…

Vaucanson leans heavily against the inside of the trench while he keeps watch, head cocked slightly so he's still able to earwig on the conversation in the trench, even if he can't turn around to watch any of it. "How'd Becker hurt his hand?" he asks, out of sheer nosiness.

Antoine slouches against some sandbags, head down below the trench line under his steel hat, and checks the magazine on his rifle, blowing some air on it and slipping it back in before straightening up, barely. He's certainly not sticking his head out.

Wallace actually flinches when Roux salutes the Lieutenant, and moves to the side. No use attempting to correct the situation, he doesn't speak enough french to get the point across. Instead he turns toward Vaucanson, "Sniper got him… guess we should keep a sharp eye out when on watch, eh?" Devon's earplugs get a nod and a quick grin from Wallace. "Good."

Devon spots Antoine and offers the man a nod. One of the few he'd met before. « Want a smoke? » in his Quebecois French. « Found the officer and the sergeant too. » commented as if referring to an earlier chat.

Rupert actually crouches when Roux salutes him, hissing, "Don't bloody salute, frenchman." He adds, in French, "Do not salad. Snipper will shoot me." He Eyes Roux, before scuttling a little to the side, and straightening. Phew, no snipers this time.

Vaucanson absently nods at what Wallace says. "Huh, shot in the hand. That must have ruined his sex life," he muses.
"… Salads?" Roux tilts his head, looking confused. He just looks sheepish after, "Sorry." He too ducks, trying to be small. « I don't know what that man just said… » Roux admits. « Something about snippers. Oh well. » He's learned his lesson and is settling in quietly.

"He gets to be with the nurses" Underwood mutters to Vaucanson, "You're sitting in a dirty trench with a bunch of dirty soldiers around you."

Devon snickers to himself, overhearing some things said amongst the soldiers both English and French.

Antoine looks to Devon and scratches himself, lightly across the brow, replying in his own regionally accented French, «Oh, well, I won't say no to one. Might as well, no?» he shrugs slight shoulders and gives the Canadian a vague smile. «Ah yes? Well there they are. The English Lieutenant must not have been shot as bad as it looked.»

Vaucanson snorts at Underwood. "The nurses never put out," he says. Or at least, they don't seem to put out for him. "At least if I squint, some of the trees look sort of attractive."

Jones wanders up in time to arch a brow and comment with a grin to Vaucanson, "Oh, and the trees *do* put out for you? Twisted bastard, aint ya?"

"You haven't been here long" Underwood replies to Vaucanson, staring at a tree, "I don't need to squint any more."

Looks like Roux gets to play with a radio! The Frenchman fishes it out of his things. No wonder he was so slow. « Allo? Allo? » He tests it. Squinting, he taps at it, getting a burst of static and hisses at it.

Rupert nods to Wallace, "You're in charge of this squad, Wallace. I'm going to be at your flank with the rest of the platoon." He hobbles off, his leg still a little sore. He's going to be right behind. Thirty miles behind you, in fact!

Devon digs into a pocket, pulling out two cigarettes. One's offered over to Antoine with a nod, the other put to his own lips. No lighter though, at least not yet.

Vaucanson sniffs. "Real men don't care about splinters," he tells Jones, grimly. That said, he solemnly regards Underwood. There's… not much you can say to that, really. Apart from 'get your filthy hands off my trees', perhaps.

«Game» It is now dawn.

Antoine picks the cigarette, taps it on the back of a hand, then puts it between his teeth, taking the proximity of his hand to brush his moustache along the shape of his upper lip. Then he looks up at the night sky, and over the edge of the trench before ducking, just chewing on it. «Do I light this up and hope there's no boche?»

«Ground Combat» You notice Harris arrive at Forest.

Harris treks into the front lines, an adjutant close at hand, looking grim. The sun just beginning to edge up from behind the horizon to the east, a fine blood red morning, the traditional time to attack. And what would the British Army be without tradition?

Tap tap tap. FFFFFFFZZZZZZZTALLO? Roux nearly falls over as a burst of static causes him to pull back and glare at the radio. « Allo? » He tries it again, messing with the frenquencies. His eyes go cross, and he debates headbutting the thing. Settling for adjusting it further…

Devon responds, « Boche will see. Boche will hear, eh. » He draws up to cig to stick it into the corner of his lip. He's not lighting up yet either, looking over to the new officer arriving.

Wallace was in the middle of mentioning that at least Becker -has- a sex life when he spots the arrival of the Captain out of the corner of his eye. Moving up to the Captain he doesn't salute, but his more rigid than normal posture is as good as it's going to get. "Sir?"

«Radio» Roux radios, Testing, testing, am I coming in? Over.

Vaucanson manages to catch the word 'sir' and pricks his ears, although he still doesn't look up. It pays to keep track of officers.

«Radio» War radios, Copy that, we're on the way!

Lyon doesn't smoke (mind the hair), but has just been listening to the different strains of conversation while awaiting some orders more direct than 'go to the lines.' When the Captain shows up, he straightens to about the degree of attention the other men reach.

Harris climbs down into the trench. "I've got some good news, Sergeant. 1st Armoured are making an attempt to break through to us north of here. I want your squad ready to support them when they make an appearance, should they request it.".

«Radio» Roux radios, Copied, will pass this on. Over.

"Sirs? Head Quarters says they are on the way," Roux's english is halting, jerky and painfully accented in a way that doesn't seem out of place of a parody movie. He seems pleased the radio seems to be working for him though.

Antoine chews on his cigarette, and raises his eyes to the approaching officer, glancing between him and Wallace with a few worried lines immediately etching themselves across his brow. Leaning in towards Devon, he queries with a nod in the Captain's direction, «What does the English officer say?»

Devon slips the cig back into his shirt pocket, spotting the English officer. A nudge of Antoine too, so the Frenchman's not left unaware either.
Wallace nods once, quick. "Anything else, sir?" Apparently such a task is simple, and if there's anything else they can do, like take out the garbage, they wouldn't mind it while they're out.

Devon mutters, « Says English armour making a push to break through north. This squad will be ordered to support. » over to his comrade.

Vaucanson blinks twice when he overhears Harris - he doesn't catch all of it, but he manages to get the general gist. They're going to go shoot foreign people. Going by his expression, he seems strangely indifferent to this.

Jones lets out a short breath and triple checks his grenades again. "Well.. least the waiting is over, eh?" he asides to whoever is closest. He looks not at all disappointed when it turns out to be one of the frenchman, who probably didnt understand him.

«Equipment» Vaucanson picks up Mills Bomb.

Harris shakes his head. "Expect German armour if they counterattack, so grab those M68s. For now you'll be assigned to support our Matildas. WHich are not here yet, which means you'll need your radioman ready to coordinate with them. In any case, I want you to be ready to move up and support as ordered, you did reconaissance of the enemy position the other day, I believe?".

«Equipment» Jones has dropped Stielhandgranate.

Now that Rupert has left and the news has arrived that they'll shortly be moving onwards, Vaucanson abandons his lookout to go re-stock his equipment. Harris' words have now caused him to frown slightly.

Wallace nods again, his manner curt. If he has any feelings on the matter of his orders, they're hidden. "Yes sir, we have. What's the callsign for our support?"

Antoine nods and rolls the cigarette around on his lips, «Ah well, the English have armour and it's not broken down? That's good.» he tugs the cigarette from his lips with a soft pthbltlt, and puts it away carefully in one of his least useful pouches.

"Be guid t'see the bodies who're no trying to kill us," Lyon offers in a philosophical mutter to himself. He starts counting the men they have, considering the orders and casualties likely to result.

"Gauntlet." Harris says. "If the Matildas break through we'll need to hold on to the path they smash through for us, it'll take a day or two to get everybody out of the town, and the armour won't be able to hold ground on its own. I'm sure the 1st Armoured company commander will know this, though, and you are effectively under his command for this one.".

«Equipment» Vaucanson has dropped .303 British x 120.

Devon responds to the Frenchman. These funny Canadians, having to learn both languages as part of their twisted educational system. In French, « Says Germans will counterattack with tanks. So be ready with AT grenades. » The 'red indian' chuckles with a single grunt. « The two pounder. I have my job here now, eh »

«Equipment» Wallace picks up M68 AT Grenade.

Listen for Gauntlet. Got it. Roux nods. « Gauntlet, » He repeats. He keeps the radio ready, tilting his head and listening in with wide hazel eyes.

Wallace nods once more, adding in a quick "Understood" to the Captain, and silently awaiting his dismissal.

Antoine furrows his brow a little further, and takes a small puffing breath, «Well, of course, if we have tanks, they'll have tanks. It is never an unfair fight for our side, is it?» he pats himself down, makes sure his grenades are where he left them, and nods.

Poor Roux, lugging along the radio. He nearly tips over backwards, scrambling into the truck with the others.

Harris passes Wallace a thin sheet of paper with his orders on it. "The guns in Arras will be firing what is left of their ammunition stocks, so artillery might be available if you get into a sticky situation. I need to tell the other platoons.".

Allan makes his way up from the rear, hearing something funny from the front.

Wallace takes the paper and nods. "Understood, sir." Considering that a dismissal, Wallace turns on his heel and begins to call out orders. "Alright, load for tanks, we're going to support the first armored. Get your kit in gear and head to the northern end of the trench, we'll set up squads there."

Jones shakes his head to Devon's call. "Not sure. But we're moving on ahead, anyhow.."

Devon comments, "Damned thing's pointed east. I'll have to swing it around and target anything rolling towards the trenchling from the north."

Lyon jogs up the deep trench, and hearing the shout he draws up before the gunner. "A yam not, you unnerstand, whot they call 'formally trained,' but…" The Scot shrugs and gestures at te ATG. "I done lots of jobs."

Allan glances at Devon, "If we're moving forward the gun stays here."

"I wouldn't mind staying back here loading that thing up with how things sound up north though, wouldn't be much to do once it's loaded though." Underwood comments while giving his rifle a quick check.

Jones peers a bit curiously at Devon. "Yeah, the road- you know, that big flat thing the tanks drive on most of the time? The road is to the east."

Devon nods to Lyon as he hears the Scotsman's remark. "Over there. We'll crew it. Infantry can't fight tanks full on. The tank will follow them when they run back and we'll be ready."

Devon keeps wheeling the antitank gun around, finally getting it facing the north.

Wallace turns to Devon then, with a voice that is grave indeed. "We don't have much of a choice."

Vaucanson keeps quiet and listens, absently grinding his teeth as he glances between the various people speaking.

Jones eyes the north, and fidgets a bit. "So we're just waiting for the Armour to call for help?"

Lyon helps Devon get the gun into place, then gives a little wave to Wallace. "Doon't you worry, lad. Odds as not ye'll need me as a surgeon 'fore ye need me on th'guns." For all that, he seems rather jovial.

Devon grunts back, "They'll target me first." and leaves it at that as he continues to adjust the bearing.

« Sirs, they are at 21 20 and moving south, » Roux comes rushing up, looking winded with that giant radio with him. He flails, then trips and lands on his face. Whoops. Oh god. Poor Roux scrambles up and moves along once again.

Wallace crooks a grin then and nods. "Exciting, isn't it?" His grin quickly fades, as he turns to look north, "Underwood, take Vaucanson and Jones, head west one sector, and keep eyes north" he says out to the dawn sky, gripping his rifle absently.

Devon moves back to load shells now with the Scotsman up front firing the gun.

Devon pats the barrel, "One AP round loaded."

Antoine trudges north along the trench line, bringing up the rear, and sidles up to a corner of the sandbagged wall, keeping his steel Adrian down. A few buckles are casually tightened, a few globs of spit are spat, and there's much puffing and rumbling below his moustache.

Vaucanson overhears his name, and moves over to Underwood to follow after him.

Underwood climbs out of the trench "Right", and starts to walk over to the west.

Lyon watches the proper gunner at work, making a mental note to set some time aside for proper training with the Canadian.

Jones trudges out and west with the others, idly looking nroth as he goes.

Jones notes with his eyes on the northern pasture, "North is clear," as he hunkers down on his heels, rifle held easily across his knee.

"I'd really like a smoke" Underwood makes a quick judgement call on the light and digs up a cigarette shortly after, attention to the north at the same time, he totally forgets to light it up though. "So straight ahead of us we have the foxhole on the road, and MGs behind it. Remember that if they try to make us rush straight ahead."

«Report from Underwood» North clear

Vaucanson hasn't really had a good chance to look north yet, and grunts at Jones before getting a look for himself.

«Command from Wallace» Underwood, you and your men hold position.

Jones nods with a rueful grin. "Fun." A slow breath is let out, before he asks, with a look aside at Underwood, "Want a match for that?"

"I'm running low, trying to make it last", Underwood grins at Jones while crouching down by a rock to get some rest. "And no, that's not the funniest part. The funny part is I have no idea what the other squad stumbled over around there besides that.." He eyes Vaucanson as he was one of those stumbling around there.

Jones chuckles briefly past a broader grin. "Heh. Well, least now the armour is doing the stumbling. They must be pretty far north, is we cant hear them.." He too looks aside at Vaucanson at that last..

Vaucanson clears his throat as he's being eyed. "That's all I remember seeing - the foxhole and the MGs. Northwest, I think, there were some riflemen as well."

"So no use going to that building I saw northwest then." Underwood shrugs, "Road northeast was clear though, so was the wheatfield north of there."

«Ground Combat» You notice Roux arrive at Pastures.

« Sirs, they are at … somewhere 14 and suspect the enemy is dug in at 21, 12! » Roux pants, running along and nearly on all fours from the weight of the radio. He is huffing and puffing.

«Command from Wallace» Underwood, move your crew west.

Jones nods. "Well, as we'll be running up to support the tankers, then-" he cuts off as Roux dashes in, panting. "Christ, one of you can speak french, right?" he asks iof Underwood and Vaucanson.

Roux pauses, and tries again. "21 … 12 … Germans dug in, they think. Ours - static … 14 …" His english is pained, and agonizingly drawn out.

"What the hell are you doing here? Doesn't Wallace need the radio?" Underwood asks in French, before waving the other two west, switching back to English and leaving the poor radio guy to his fate, "Move west."

"The rifles were northwest of the machinegunner's foxhole," Vaucanson clarifies. "Just north across the road. Dunno about the building, was kind of busy at the time." He opens his mouth to speak again, but thank god, Underwood can talk French.

"They left me behind…" The Frenchman looks down glumly. It's heavy this radio! He is hurrying, but Roux is no superman.
"Well, see if you can link up with Wallace, he'll need that radio." Underwood mutters in French before switching back to English. "Well, hope we have some luck, or we'll get flanked when crossing the road."

Jones lets out a short breath. "Right. Luck. Lets see how the lady feels about us today, then. Across the road, and keep moving nother, then?"

«Ground Combat» Roux moves East <E>.

Vaucanson has been across this road before, and wasn't terribly impressed with the experience. He just nods unhelpfully.

Underwood shakes his head, "Wallace might have to send a runner here, we're waiting here for now. Anyone got eyes on the house?"

Underwood arrives from the East.

Devon tries to march a prisoner towards Arras, but alas the badly wounded German dies on the way. "Lyon, the medic, got hit bad by the antitank gun. Were you able to save him, Sergeant?"

Underwood walks in from the west, rifle over shoulder and having a smoke. "I think both Vaucanson and Jones made it back, but we blundered in on this first time around."

Devon nods to that. "Tanker helped us. Me and Lyons moved up to get you guys some help, but this gun spotted 'im." looking over to the 3.7mm PaK 36."

Underwood eyes Devon, "If you don't rush off next time, maybe like wait for some orders, you won't walk into an AT gun and get blasted."

Devon slowly nods. "He saw the Germans here and took them for English. Last mistake he made." The dour man shakes his head. "Ran full into their line of fire, fully exposed."

Wallace is, fortunately for most concerned, too damn busted up to say a whole lot. He's actually kneeling in the soft dirt of the foxhole, his eyes closed. Were it not for his rhythmic breathing, one might actually think he'd managed to die sitting up.

Underwood shrugs a bit at the whole thing, "Guess it's time to dig then." And wanders off to get started.
