Arras Surrounded Time For Recon

Rupert is peering east, standing in the trench with the lenses of his binoculars glinting in the sun. He's apparently watching for enemy movement, or just spotting local wildlife.

Harris has arrived.
Andre has arrived.
Andre arrives from the North.

Wallace is moving through the trench, a clipboard under one arm. Apparently he's been working on inventory… even though the supplies are running low. He spots the LT peering out across the line and moves up to stand beside the man, clearing his throat. "Sir?"

Underwood shuffles up the trench, quite intent on just trying to find some nice spot to relax and maybe get something to eat, with all the people in command around here, he's quite obviously in the wrong place.

Rupert doesn't notice Wallace's approach until he actually adresses him, lowering the binoculars. "Yes, sergeant?" He looks at Wallace with mild curiosity, his watery blue eyes darting to the clipboard.

Mitchell has arrived.
Mitchell arrives from the North.

The sound of soft humming accompanies Llywelyn up from the southern end of the trench. Caked in mud and carrying his entrenching tolls, as he is wont do to. It's a fairly jaunty tune, though his humming stops when he sees all the rankers about. He likely had the same thought as Underwood, and now his hopes are dashed.

Bailey choses to sit as much as he can between digging and improving trenches and he's sitting now too, cleaning his rifle, smoking a cigarette.

Andre walks from the northern path, he nods his head to ones he recognises. He steps and notices Rupert, he walks towards him.

Mitchell the greenest of the green recurits arrives from the northern trench looking everybit of spit and polish.

Harris arrives, on his own, heading in from the town to the west, looking even more haggard than he has been lately.

Wallace hands over the clipboard, giving Rupert a nod. "The munitions inventory. We're looking okay for now, but that's not going to hold." He glances over his shoulder then, and slightly lowers his voice. "Got a minute?"

Tall, regal trees reach for the sky as they have for hundreds of years, their crowns lending welcome shade in the summer and frosty artwork in the winter. Old leaves cover the ground, but obscured by plentiful underbrush, they are more felt than seen when walking over them. It is an oasis in an area otherwise covered by farmland, left alone to flourish where elsewhere the hand of man has cut down every tree for their own needs.

It is currently daytime.

Rupert accepts the clipboard, looking at it carefully. He spent a long time in the quartermaster troops, so munitions is one of the few things that he really knows about. He nods to Wallace, but then he spots Harris walking up, "After this, sergeant. I think the captain wants a word." He takes a step forward, urging Wallace to join him and the company CO. "I didn't know you were inspecting the line today, sir."

Llywelyn goes to sit, not far from Bailey as things have it. He chugs some water from his canteen, rolling his shoulders back. Digging takes it out of one. He does his best not to call attention to himself, especially with Harris prowling about.

Harris shakes his head. "I'm not. Bad news, Rupert.". Its always bad news. He eyes the rest of the men, and leans a little closer. "You want it here, or you want some privacy?" he wonders.

Bailey stands up as Harris comes about, nodding respectfully at the officer but refraining from salutes. He sits down as soon as is appropriate and goes back to his work, trying to listen in.

Rupert glances around. After a moment, he clears his throat and says, "I think it's fine if you say it here, sir. My men are resolved, I'm sure that they will be unfazed even by bad news. In any case, better to have a full grasp of the situation."

Underwood crouches down close to Bailey and Llywelyn too, mostly to disapprear in the crowd, as no military news are good news he tries to ignore whatever the captain is about to say.

Wallace glances to Rupert, but keeps his trap shut for once. It is, the LT's call after all. Instead he turns his gaze on Harris, quietly waiting for that other shoe to drop.

Llywelyn takes another swallow from his canteen, enjoying the opportunity to drink and rest while he can. He sighs. Something tells him it won't last long.

Mitchell slides over towards where the others are so as to stand out from the crowd.

«OOC» Mitchell says "so as NOt to stand out"
Roux has arrived.

Andre nods his head to Rupert, "You can count on us sir. he says and turns to Harris to hear the bad news.

Harris indicates the northwards. "Arras is cut off. The Germans don't seem like they are too eager to attack your positions here, so they've smashed up our lines between here and Vimy. Far as we know German infantry are digging in up there now. They've done likewise to the south as well. We won't be get any more supplies from Paris, in any case, so you better consider ammunition from now on. I'm told that the generals are working out a solution, when someone comes up with a plan, I'll be sure to keep you updated.".

Bounding along with some supplies, it's Roux! He looks fresh and new, as one can be. Freshly discharged and all. Helpfully, he sets a crate down. Charges! Good times. The Frenchman straightens, looking around. This IS where they wanted it yes? He comes in just in time for the briefing. Although, he really doesn't speak english…

Rupert nods slowly to Harris. "Cut off, eh? Well, we'll have to do more with less, eh?" There's a note of dark humour in his voice, even if the words are "motivating". He asks, more seriously, "If the enemy are to attack, do you know what their expected direction of approach is? If we have armor coming from the North, then we better move the AT gun around a little."

Bailey :has a sudden urge to count his bullets and does so.
Bailey says "1…2…3…."

Mitchell listening peers out to the north as if expecting to see the German army rolling in.

Llywelyn unconsciously unshoulders his rifle as he listens to Harris. He also counts bullets, and makes sure the weapon isn't jammed or broken or anything. "God…" he murmurs to himself. Whether he's praying or just bemoaning is unclear.

Underwood is all maxed out, carrying around some MG clips as well, so he doesn't look to worried yet, he just nudges Bailey, "Just let me know if you need more."

Andre shakes his head, "The remainning French army will fight to the last bullet and to the last men to defend this town." he says, "We will not surrender to Germans." he says and by the look of it, he is trying to inspire people.

Bailey counts his bullets slowly and completely unnecessarily as he could make a quick count easily. He nods to Underwood. "I got 244 spare, 20 in the MG."

"Probably from the north now, Rupert, rather than the east." Harris agrees. "We're not planning on staying put though, we won't last long without supplies. We're just waiting for the word from Lord Gort and the others. Tonight I want you to organise a reconnaissance of the enemy positions north of here, so we can see what we're up against.". A pause. "Until nightfall, you can be put to work getting the platoon ready to move out. Anything we can't fit into a truck, we have to be prepared to destroy rather than leave to the Germans. Don't destroy anything yet, of course… just be aware we might be moving in a hurry.". Another pause, and then he removes his hat, to rub at his balding head. "We'll need to tell the townsfolk. I think the Lieutenant Colonel might be doing that.".

"About the same" Underwood replies to Bailey, lacking an MG it's probably more than he'll use this entire war anyway.

Wallace looks from Rupert to Harris, his brow furrowing in worry. His eyes close for a moment, and he nods slowly at the news, then quietly remarks, "Will we be pulling back to Arras or beyond, sir?"

Numbers Roux understands. "220," He points to the .303 in his bag, "80 rifle. 7.5," He nods. "Two grenades," He holds up his two fingers. Roux falls quiet. He looks around, cautiously out of the trench. Then pulls his head back in. Nope, no Germans!

Rupert stares at Harris. "Moving out." He glances back at Arras, idly fingering his wannabe moustache. He doesn't say anything for a good long time, before murmuring, "I'm happy it's the Lt. Colonel and not me, Mike. I doubt those froggies are going to be very happy." He pauses, then leans closer Harris, glancing from Wallace to the captain. His voice comes in a low hiss, too low for anyone farther away to hear, "Does this mean that they're thinking about pulling back alltogether?"

Harris looks around, doesn't really bother lowering his voice. "There are two possibilities - we break out to the south, to link up with the rest of the French army, or we make a dash for the coast. Its up to the generals to decide which. If we are ordered to head north, then… I imagine thats it for us.".

Rupert nods, then murmurs, "Oh well. I'm happy it's not something I need to worry about. So, this recon. You want the roadside scouted out, or some more specific location there?"

"Just when we were starting to make the place homey," Llywelyn mutters wryly to the men near him. It's something of a joke, though even his attempt at humor is rather grim.

Mitchell pales as the concept of being 'cutoff' begins to sink in. He takes a deep breath but remains outwardly calm as he assorbs 'night recon'.

Andre turns to Harris, "What about the civilians at Arras sir?" he asks to him, "We have an evacuation plan for them?" he asks.

Roux is lost. He just keeps nodding, loading his rifle and smiling politely. While he seems to be picking up bits and pieces of information, most of it just goes past him. Although, he does seem to lose that smile as the realization sinks in.

Bailey is already checking over the MG, preparing for the mission. He listens without a word and keeps his expression neutral. He pointedly doesn't look at the French soldiers though.

Harris eyes Andre. "The whole town? 100,000 civilians? Where are they going to go? Who will feed them if they are on the road? How will they move, the Luftwaffe have filled the roads with refugees, we'll barely be able to move ourselves." he ponders, speaking his mind aloud. He turns back to Rupert, and says, "I'll be back at nightfall, with your recon area. Make sure you are ready.".

Wallace rolls his shoulders and sucks in a slow breath, then lets it out. Whatever worry is washed away, resignation sliding across features. For now, he's content to sit back and listen to the orders that he's sure are forthcoming. When he hears that they don't have a specific area just yet, he turns his gaze on Rupert, silently waiting for the go-ahead to begin preparations.

Rupert nods stiffly to Harris. "Very good sir, I'll get the men ready." He glances around at his men, "You heard the Captain! Sergeant Wallace, make sure that the AT gun is moved to the North, that the platoon has its extra gear packed into the trucks, and that the men are ready for tonight's action. I want every shiny thing either covered with dark tape or blackened with ash." He lowers his voice, "You had something you needed to talk to me about, sergeant?"

Llywelyn swallows as he listens to Harris. Not that he doesn't see the truth of it, but it makes him pale all the same. He glances over at Roux, a look of sorrow in his eyes, before he has to turn away from the Frenchman altogether.

Sidney lifts his head up, a trench shovel in his hand from where he'd been furthering the improvement of the fortifications of the line. "What was that?" as if having heard some talking but unsure what it was about. A short nod to the Welshman Llywelyn, then straightening himself up to more proper posture as he spots the LT.

Some things transcend language. This is one of them. The feeling of dread, and looks. His eyes widen a bit at Llywelyn's glance, then he looks down as the man turns away. Roux shifts uncomfortably, not fully understanding what's being /said/, but what is going on at least. He just … looks down, grimly.

"Well, that's the end of visits to the hospital for now" Underwood mumbles to the men closest to him, "Hope everyone we have there is fit enough to be moved."

Wallace shakes his head quickly, muttering just loud enough for the LT to hear, "Already answered" , and he moves further down the trench, pointing at Bailey and Llywelyn. "You two, handle the gun." He then turns and waves Andre over. "You, follow me." And he begins to move toward the southern end of the trench to make sure the equipment is properly covered.

Mitchell goes about the business of packing his gear making sure everything is clearly marked and ready for transport. Once finished he then sets to the task of covering anything on his person that might reflect light even going to far as to darken his face with ash.

Rupert shakes his head at Sidney, "No need to dig that fortress here after all, lance-corporal. Looks like we're going to be moving soon." He offers a smile, but it's a touch weak, and his eyes shift to Arras town. Oh, them poor froggies.

Llywelyn looks over at Bailey, offering the big Englishmen a short nod. The gun. Aye.

Sidney ohhs quietly, nodding with a glance to the other men a moment. "The tanks. Heard north o' here. Got the word yesterday, sir." is a more quiet response to Rupert as if putting the information together. He steps around, sliding the shovel back into his rucksack as he reaches to help move the antitank gun.

Andre nods his head to Wallace, "Understood." he says and walks with him.

Bailey gets up and limps over to start moving the unwieldy 2 pdr bigass gun northwards, making a dour face at that.

Poor Froggies indeed. Roux is helping put dark tape on things, as best as he can. He also opens his backpack, to deposit a few grenades and things. Must've brought some up to help out. "Bombs," Roux mumbles in heavily accented english, pointing at the satchel charges and grenades.
(— It's a bömb. —)

Llywelyn sighs as he rises, stretching. Time for sitting about is over, it seems. He helps Bailey move the gun north, his own expression grim.

Sidney draws around the small satchel with is own British satchel charge, nodding to Roux's word as if understanding what was meant well enough. He doesn't offer a spoken response, though, keeping mum as he waits for movement and directives from the officers.

Wallace points out the boxes of black tape. "Pick up that box and follow me" he says to Andre, the begins to move along the trench, handing out black tape to those that need it.

Andre nods his head and grabs the equipment from the door, appears to be some bullets loaded in it, he is trying his best to move the items but the thing is pretty heavy…

Mitchell meticulously covers every button, snap hook, and buckle on his person with the tape.

Sidney steps to help Roux move some of the satchel charges, picking up one to add to his own.

Rupert returns a few hours later, lugging his Thompson with him. He squats in the trench, passing a lighter below its metal surfaces to take out the glint.

Roux fades into the background, helping tape things and shift around spare ammunition, he pauses. "Make sure you have gren-" Pause, "Ade," The Frenchman adds helpfully in halting, jerking english. "In box." He nods.

Sidney nods back to the French soldat, though by that time his own arms are full.

Antoine trudges in along the trench from the west, head low, and pauses as he leans against one of the trench walls, patting himself down, buckling up a few things, fastening others. He's already rather dirtied up, and stops Andre with a light tap on the shoulder to get some tape and finish dulling down what his lack of grooming hasn't. Then he trudges over to a nearby box and helps himself to an M68.

Mitchell nervously shifts his weight from one foot to the next awaiting order.

Sidney is stepping with the group, keeping quiet for now with the latest news of movement and German advance. The ANZAC Combat Engineer keeps the demo satchels safely lifted clear of the dirt and out of the reach of the ambling French cattle in the pasture.

Rupert is crouched in the low grass near the trench, waiting for orders from the company CO. He's even fixed a few branches to his Brodie helmet, making him look like a complete and utter twerp.

Bailey got that 2 pdr moved together with Llywellyn and is now moving along with the Lieutenant, crouched down not far from him with the machine gun set down for now. Giving him a moments rest from hauling it around.

Andre nods his head and waits for Harris or Rupert to give the order to go for the mission.

Mitchell very quietly says a prayer, you could swear you heard him mutter something like "don't let me screw up, amen."

Underwood is crouched down at the edge of the trench, staring out in the dark while he waits, something he's quite good at doing.

Llywelyn just waits near Bailey, trying not to look too downcast.

Antoine shuffles on after the others, doing his best to stay towards the rear, though he's not blatant about it or anything, he just happens to drag his boots a little more heavily. He's got a wretched cigarette end between his teeth, unlit, and he chews on it as he looks about glumly.

Rupert calls out, "Now listen up, we're doing reconnaissance tonight, not an assault! So I want zero casualties. If we make contact and come under fire tonight, we pull back in good order, while firing on the enemy. But I want it to be bloody clear that we're not firing the first shot."

Harris returns, heads over to Rupert, whispers some orders. There we go. Done.

Sidney nods back, "Sir." to Rupert, "If we spot enemy tanks in position, permission to lay antitank mines as part of this recon?" He waits then, sliding one of the satchel charges around to where he might fix something up on the fly.

Llywelyn nods and gets off a "Yes, sir" to Rupert. Not firing is fine with him.

Wallace nods in answer to the orders, moving over to crouch beside Rupert. Silently he waited for the others to complete their questions, his eyes to the north as if contemplating some great master plan.

Rupert continues, "The target is the area between 19,9 and 21,9, and the road north of there. We move there, and take out targets of opportunity if they present themselves, but only if it looks more or less safe. We're going to be advancing in two parties, one led by Sergeant
Wallace, one led by me." He shows his map to Wallace, "You lot are going to advance straight north of here, and I'm moving at the same time two miles to the West. Lets make sure that we both have at least one person who's sneaky enough to act as a point scout."

Bailey remains quiet and questionless, just waiting to be told in which direction to move and in which party.

Rupert glances around, "Questions? If not… Sidney, Welsh chap, and you two," He points at Antoine and Vaucanson, "You're with me. The rest, with Wallace."

Vaucanson, who has been keeping schtum the whole while, nods back to Rupert and adjuts the strap of his rifle. "Yessir."

Bailey nods to Rupert and then looks at Wallace to aknowledge he's understood. He adds a grunt and another nod, and picks up the MG again, ready to get moving northwards.

Sidney nods back to Rupert from where he's standing. "About laying some antitank mines if we spot Gerry armour on the road, sir?" A hand draws down to pat the satchel charge as if to reference it. "Permission, sir?"

Mitchell moves over to join Wallace.

Rupert nods to Sidney, "It depends on the situation. Lets see."

Llywelyn blinks at Rupert. Welsh chap likely applies to him. He sticks with Rupert, then.

Wallace finds a quiet moment when everyone seems to be shifting about, and leans over to Rupert, muttering "Lose the twigs", before moving over toward where his team is assembled. "Alright, which of you wants the honor of leading the way?"

Rupert blinks at Wallace, touching the twigs on his helmet. He looks crestfallen for a moment, before rather irritable snapping them off. He waves his Thompson, "Allright men, lets move."

Antoine glances at Rupert, brow knitting lightly as he's pointed out, then looks about to figure out what's going on. After a couple of seconds, he heads over in the officer's direction and stands there, expectantly petting his rifle.

Sidney nods back, "Yes, sir." falling in with Llywelyn and the lieutenant.

Underwood just stares right past Wallace's shoulder, not about to volunteer for that.

«Command from Rupert» Lets keep in touch with our movements, sergeant. I'll give you the word when we're ready to move.

Bailey points to his leg. "Wounded, sir." Then he taps the MG. "And this one's heavy." Yeah, he's got GOOD reasons to not scout anything!

Andre Shakes his head, "I will." he says. "I am a Soldier of France." he says in a broken english.

Wallace nods, turning to the Frenchman, Andre. "You lead. Wait for my command." And with that, he begins doing a last-minute check of his gear to make sure things are clipped in place.

Wallace looks around those assembled, and lets one hand rest on the ground to help support his crouching form. "All ready?"

Mitchell answers in a hushed voice, "Ready"

Andre nods his head to Wallace, "As you wish." he says and keeps his calm status for now. "Yes sir." he says.

«Command from Rupert» Wallace, I'm going to move north soon to make sure it's safe, send someone ahead when I move.

Bailey slips some more ammunition into the MG while he waits for orders to move. He looks up and nods at Wallace. "Yes, Sergeant."

"Ready" Underwood mutters as a reply to Wallace from somewhere back in the dark.

«Command from Rupert» Move the scout north

Wallace points to Andre, then points to the north. "You. Move." Apparently the usually jovial sargeant is all business out here on the move.

«Ground Combat» Andre moves North <N>.

Mitchell remains still as he watches Andre move off into the dark.

«Command from Rupert» 19,9 is clear. My squad, move North.

«Game» Underwood changes his style to Stealth!

Bailey shifts a little where he's crouched down on his knees, looking around himself without seeing much in the dark. He's just waiting for the signal to move up north.

«Command from Rupert» Bring your squad forward, and tell me when they're ready to move again. I think we can move forwards en masse for this next one.

Mitchell awaits the signal from Wallace to move out.

"Alright, we all move north. Bailey, eyes east, Underwood, eyes west when we arrive. Let's go." Wallace then gets up from his spot and begins to slip through the underbrush, in a sad attempt at staying out of sight.

Underwood duckwalks and crawls into the area, shifting his attention west.

Bailey moves carefully through the underbrush, crouched down and spying left, right and onwards but tries to keep his eyes on the ground too to not step on something that'll snap under his feet. He stops and gets settled in, turning his attention east.

Mitchell moves up and takes a knee keeping watch to the north.

«Ground Combat» You notice Wallace arrive at Pastures.

"It looks all clear to the west" Underwood reports quietly to Wallace when he comes into view. He's sitting on his heels, peering out in the darkness, and he could probably miss an elephant out there.

Mitchell notices Wallace move up into the area and whispers, "clear to the north."

Andre waits for orders from Wallace to move forward. He nods his head, "North is clear sir." he says.

"Clear to the east," Bailey reports in a harsh whisper. The machine gun is resting at his feet again but he has a hand on it, ready to sling it up and move on moment's notice.

Wallace takes in the reports, his eyes turned to the north as he surveys the land they're about to take over. "Let me know when you're ready to move on, chaps." (When you have ticks to +move).

Andre nods his head, "Shall I move north to scout sir?"

Bailey glances to Wallace. "ALl ready, Sarge," he murmurs and picks up the machine gun again.

"Ready" Underwood shifts his weight around, still staring out over the west side.

«Command from Rupert» Houses at 20,9 are clear.

Rupert calls out, "Take out the krauts in that trench, and then fall back!

Llywelyn lets his mills bomb fly. His aim isn't bad but it's off enough that it doesn't do any good. "Flaming…bloody…hell…" he curses, somewhere between panting and sobbing as he raises another grenade.

Rupert shakes his head at Sidney, muttering out, "Christ." He hobbles over to the engineer, riffling his pockets for personal information and other stuff that he wants to be taking back to his folks.

Llywelyn scrambles to get out of the foxhole. He has no intention of sticking around. But, as he climbs out, his eyes fall on Sidney's body. "Sir…sir..Surely we can't leave him here?!"

Antoine is pinned down over by the foxhole, watching the two Germans run out of it as he ducks from the whistling shots overhead. "Merde." he spits out and stands to pull back, rifle up, firing off a shot before running.

Wallace turns to Bailey then and points to the north west. "Suppression on 22,10, I want that MG tired and dazed. The rest of you get ready, Underwood, keep an eye to our north to make sure we're not flanked."

"I think the lt is a bit groggy from his wounds though" Underwood mumbles as a suggestion, but at the same time he gets ready to move out.

Underwood stands at the edge of the trench, looking as blank as ever as he eyes the men moving in behind him.

Mitchell brings up the rear and reports, "All clear to the rear."

Andre keeps his head down inside the trench, he is looking at northern path in a view he is in full offensive mode, he is covering retreating infantry.

Mitchell has left.
Mitchell heads off South.
Mitchell has arrived.

Mitchell plops down in the bottom of the trench and lets out a long breath releasing the tension of his first combat mission.

Bailey scrambles into the trench and catches his breath for awhile.

Rupert has arrived.
Rupert arrives from the South.
«Game» Rupert moves into Reserve Trench.
Llywelyn has arrived.

Antoine has arrived.

Andre shakes his head as he notices Rupert, "We should call an ambulance for him." he says.

Rupert drags himself into the trench, looking like shit. His words are curt, "Lost Sidney, Vaucanson and I are wounded. There was an MG nest north of the foxhole, and some more riflemen to the Northwest. Wallace, did you suffer any casualties?"

Llywelyn climbs back into the trench, unharmed by their latest adventure. Physically, at least. He just slumps down, sitting with his head against the dirt wall, a blankly somber expression on his face.

Once Vaucanson's adrenaline wears off, he looks just as gloomy as the rest of the squad. One would -hope- that's due to Sidney's death, although the fact that he's bleeding certainly can't help. Like Llywelyn, he sits down heavily against the inside of the trench, keeping a weather eye on Rupert.

Antoine drops into the trench. He's dirty, but unharmed. After a few steps, he leans on a wall and lets himself slide down to the ground, where he digs in his pockets for a cigarette end, brought up to his bloodless lips on pale shaky fingers. Then he stares at the rifle across his lap and spits into the soil between his boots.

Andre Turns to Wallace, "May I get this hand checked sir?" he asks to Wallace

Wallace slides down into the trench somewhere before Rupert and his team return. When asked about casualties, he shakes his head. "A few minor wounds, but not much we can do about it here."

Rupert nods to Wallace, "Take over here, sergeant. See to the men. I need to get to the med station - you, with me."
Rupert points to Vaucanson.

Rupert has left.
Rupert heads off South.

Vaucanson stands up, and trudges after Rupert.

Antoine undoes his chin strap and pulls his helmet off, letting it rest on a knee as he wipes both hands at his sweaty face and back over his slick hair, before slumping back against the trench, staring up at the sky as he puffs on his cigarette stub.
