The mixed Islamic and Christian ancestry of Crete is apparent in its architecture - most villages have both a mosque and a church. The villages here are old - civilisation has had plenty of time to develop in Crete - and so they are built to last, with small whitewashed stone buildings being the usual villagers house. Narrow cobblestoned streets, often on quite steep gradients as this is a hilly country, wend their way chaotically through the tangle of close knit buildings.

Leopold is sitting in the church, just inside the door chewing on some dried rations

Engel is re-wrapping a clean bandage over his right hand. The wound has healed to barely a scratch, so it's at the point where he can tend to it himself without much danger of infection. He hums to himself while he concentrates on that, some jaunty modern tune.

Goethe is hidden away inside the church, behind a pew. As he checks his extra magazines and cleans the submachinegun, he quietly hums a swing tune.

Bastian has been nursing a gut wound ever since a recent partisan attack. It hasn't gone septic, but has been quite a distraction. He seems to have recovered some of himself, though, and is finishing a cleaning of his weapon.

Adolf has stepped outside of the church and is leaning against a house, keeping watch in the streets of the small village…waiting for an attack.

Hartmann leans by a window, a watchful eye outside, MP40 dangling from his right hand.

Its a couple of nights after the drop (ICly, anyway…) and fighting has been continuous though, fortunately for you, mostly in the distance. Mostly. Stromm is back, his arm in a bandage but apparently still fit for duty, as he prowls into the church. "Alright platoon, form up, enough garrison duty for you.".

Engel's ear catches the tune Goethe is humming and he picks it up himself, changing the melody of his own soft humming a little to match it. He adds a quiet "Ba-dum-bum-bum…" under his breath. Restraining the urge to whistle. Stromm's voice interrupts his happy tune. He sighs, straightening up. "Do you think we'll need the radio, Hauptmann?" he asks. Sounding hopeful the answer will be 'no.'

Adolf grins as he sees the Hauptmann. "Glad to see you alive Hauptmann."He walks in behind him.

Leopold stands up immediantly at the sound of authority, his helmet slips over his eyes and he has to bring his hand up to re-adjust it before drawing his Lugger

Goethe goes quiet with the sound of the commissioned officer's voice, the young fellow rising to shoulder his MP40 and adjust the modified paratrooper's stahlhelm. He does send a smile over towards Engel with a look, hearing the other's momentary joining in with his swing melody humming.

Bastian closes the bolt twice, then shoves in a magazine and chases his troops out of he church. "You heard the man, form up. Shortest up front tallest in back," he scowls, "you know the drill." Not that the men really need the reminder, it's just reinforcement.

«Game» Bastian moves out of Church.
«Game» Leopold moves out of Church.
«Game» Engel moves out of Church.
«Game» Goethe moves out of Church.

Hartmann glances across. Several folks he hasn't met yet, being a straggler from Leutnant Droege's section. He straightens up, follows the rest.

«Game» Hartmann moves out of Church.

Leopold moves to the middle of the gathering group looking at his gun criticly before nodding to himself

Adolf walks towards the end of the line, being one of the tallest.

Stromm 'encourages' a few laggards, until everybody is out of the church, armed, ready for action. "I'm going to give you all a quick sitrep of the overall situation here, before we start to make our contribution today. Suffice to say the situation is bad, hopefully you will be doing something about that.".

Engel returns Goethe's grin with a light shrug. The rest was nice while it lasted. He falls in near the middle of the pack, neither particularly looming or short. He's taken the radio with him out of the church, groaning a little at the weight of the thing on his back. He can't keep a frown off his face as Stromm starts. Bad? Not encouraging.

Hartmann glances back at the church, frowning at something.

Goethe listens without comment, the lean younger fellow getting into line at about the middle. He seems a bit distracted, eyes glancing across in the direction of the nearby airfield where exploding shells at times echo across the pastureland and smoke rises in the distance.

Weiss has connected.

Leopold frowns as he cocks his ear towards Stromm, he begins to mutter something indistidinct; his eyes closed

Bastian stands in front, not only from his position but also with all the tall Jagers about. They have formed up at the Hauptmann Stromm's command, ready to receive a sitrep and mission.

So, Stromm explains. "Our forces in the eastern end of the island, at Heraklion, have apparently failed completely in their objectives, and most of them are believed to have been captured. Our situation here is little better, as we have achieved none of our primary objectives - particularly the capture of the airfield - and the vast majority of our supplies, and all of our reinforcements, that were sent by sea from the mainland have been turned back or sunk by the Allied navy. In short, its do or die time. But thats what the fallschirm are trained to do.".

Leopold falls silent as Stromm continues, after raising his pistol to his lips and kissing it near the hammer

Engel has been trained well enough not to groan during Stromm's words. But still, he barely managed it. He gulps softly at the 'do or die time' line. He's quiet, a grim look coming to his usually light-hearted face.

Although he's still a bit bandaged up, Weiss is listening to what's being said. His expression is rather serious as he hears the words, nodding a little bit to himself.

Hartmann settles his MP40 more comfortably on its strap, waits for the details.

Goethe is still seeming detached, though there are clues he's listening though perhaps his reaction's a bit odd. After the description of the German force's status in such miserable terms by the CO, Goethe seems to smile a bit and lift his chin in a way counter to expectation. His eyes don't settle on any one person or point of the horizon, rather they still continue to bounce a bit as if following a silent tune created by the distant gunfire nearer to Maleme.

Bastian sets his jaw, staying at attention. His guts are knotting, and it's not just the injury. The urge to shift his weight is stifled, showing only in the tight rolling of his shoulders. Already the Unterfeldwebel is imagining a desperate attempt to seize the airfield.

Stromm finishes off, by leading into what it is these poor paras are going to be doing. "General Student has made the decision to focus all our strength here, at Maleme, and make a final attempt to clear the airfield. While you have been resting here behind the lines…", well, dealing with near fanatic Cretan civilian resistance, anyway, "the airfield has mostly been captured, the problem is enemy artillery which is well in range of the airfield and denies us its use. The artillery is set up on a hill to the immediate south of the airfield.". A hill! Oh joyous day!

Hartmann glances up. To Bastian, "Had we better get the rest of the 9mm ammo, then, sir?"

Adolf quietly sighs and mutters under his breath, "Why does it always have to be a hill.."

Engel may not be the most battle-hardened of men, but even he knows enough to pale at mention of the hill. He swallows again and lets out a breath that's very akin to a sigh.

"Uphill, we will reach the top…" Weiss mutters to himself, glancing over at Adolf. "Because the hill is there," he remarks, a bit absently. He glances around at the others, rather thoughtfully.

Leopold lowers his head and mutters almost silently again

Adolf clears his throat and speaks aloud, "Sir, wouldn't it make sense to have us drop behind The Artillery, then attack it from the rear flank?" He asks Stromm respectfully as he can.

Bastian performs a sharp about-face and glares at the assembled men. "Lock it up, Jagers!" he snaps, "You're here to listen and kill. Not talk!" The sergeant pivots again to face the captain and apologizes with a simple, "Hauptmann."

Hartmann waits. After all, he asked the Sergeant a question.

Goethe lets loose a grin for a moment, which he turns his head to hide and smother to show at least a bit of discipline. "Merry May, a bright sunny day, all up the Cretan hill we go." whispered, followed by silently mouthing the sound 'boom'.

Leopold raises his head and stands crossing himself with his free left hand

Engel keeps his mouth shut, even tightening his jaw further at Bastian's words. He tries to look /slightly/ less grim about this mission, but he can't summon up much enthusiasm.

Weiss nods a little bit as he considers that, going silent again now.

Hartmann folds his arms, waits to see who's going to open their mouth this time.

Leopold begins shifting his weight slightly from foot to foot restlessly. Giving his weapon another look over and rubbing a fleck of dirt from off its barrel

Goethe does look towards the officer when it's mentioned the attack on the heights would be at dusk, nodding his head to that and seeming to be perhaps a little more focused and encouraged by the news.

Bastian takes it in stride, starting to work out a plan in his head. A quick glance is given over the shoulder at his men and their equipment; he waits for the Hauptmann to finish before laying in with the questions.

"The attack /cannot/ be allowed to bog down. This is an enemy artillery position we are attacking. We have only light troops because our reinforcements mostly did not make it. If the enemy have time to start laying down barrages on us its all over. I want to see maximum aggression and spirit tonight." Stromm warns. "You will all have the opportunity to study a map of the area with what intelligence we have, and our objectives, I suggest you all spend some time doing that so if you fall out of the chain of command you know what to do. Are there any other questions?".

Engel shoulders his radio, looking at Bastian quizzically. And rather hopefully. "Will we need the radio, do you think?" he asks the ranking folk. Still sounding hopeful they won't.

The Unterfeldwebel lets the Jagers ask the questions themselves, now that the officer has spoken. They've earned it. After Engel's question on the radio is answered he pipes in with, "Sir, does Company have any more grenades in the stores for us? An assault will be markedly more bloody without them."

"I'll see if I can prise some from what passes for our supply organisation." Stromm promises.

Goethe lifts his chin and speaks with an added volume not typical for himself. "Sir. When we capture the Kiwi artillery, permission to turn it around and shell the enemy, sir!" His shoulders straighten, perhaps with whimsical bravado. And in hearing the Unterfeldwebel's question, one hand at his side motions towards three stielhandgranate's he's armed with himself.

Hartmann raises a hand. "I'm guessing we should share out the rest of the 9mm? - there's about a thousand rounds in the church still."

"If we capture the guns intact, I have no doubt that we will be making good use of them ourselves." Stromm agrees.

Weiss listens in quiet, frowning once in a while, but without adding any questions of his own.

Bastian turns to the men. "Load up all the ammo you can from the church. You, new guy," he barks, pointing to Leopold. "Where's your rifle?"

«Game» Hartmann moves into Church.
«Game» Engel moves into Church.
«Equipment» Engel has dropped Radio.
«Game» Engel moves out of Church.

Leopold Turning towards Bastain "the plutoons supply drop got lost in the terrain sir"

Engel jogs back into the church to stash his radio, looking like an eager puppy to rid himself of the thing. He's even smiling when he ducks back out to rejoin the squad. Perhaps this won't be so bad, after all.

«Game» It is now dusk.

Bastian waves Leopold into the church. "Grab that British Enfield, the rest of the ammo for the machinegun, and as much British ammunition as you can handle after that. You'll be working with the machinegunner." He gestures to Adolf.

Leopold nods and gets to the church

Weiss gets himself some grenades, then looks around rather carefully, studying the others for a few moments.

Goethe notices the old rifle still set between two ammo crates. "Got a rifle over here, a spare." He himself has his submachinegun, but points to the Kar98k.

Engel stows his luger pistol in favor of another grenade, getting himself fully equipped before they set off.

Leopold examines the british weapon curiously as hemoves over near Adolf

Hartmann says "One more spare grenade here."

Adolf glances at Leopold. "Grab some extra Machine Gun Ammo."

Goethe makes a face, looking over the men gathering their gear. He's got three grenades on his belt, plus a holstered pistol and an MP40 machine pistol.

You've been gathered up!

Goethe is readied to quickmarch with the rest of them as the dusk hour comes. Gear set, kit readied, mentally prepared for action. "READY!" called out.

Leopold nods and falls in behind Adolf

Engel rubs his hands together, letting out a long breath. A nervous gesture, perhaps. He looks eager to do /something/, though, at least. "Ready, Unterfeldwebel," he affirms with a short nod.

Hartmann slips into line with Leopold and Adolf. "Ready."

Weiss nods, readying his weapon one last time, "Ready," he replies.

Adolf nods his head. "Hartmann, move in first. I'll move in, then Leopold behind me."

"Alright, whoever makes contact, the other team try to flank them. Go." With that, the teams split.

Goethe quickly moves behind Bastian with Weiss and Engel, following the NCO through the shadowed pasture.

Engel sprints lightly along with his squad, a slight smile coming to his face as he runs. The physical activity provides a release from the tension, for him. An excuse not to think about what is to come.

Bastian is running with the squad; none of the Jagers are unwounded,b ut none of them seem to be lagging. "Alright, slow down. We've got the advantage of darkness on our side, let's keep it," he pants.

Bastian is lucky. Crawling up a slope allows for something more of a standing posture, using the legs a lot more to gain height. Unfortunately, it also means his head is the closest to the enemy. The FJ helmet, while nicely padded and a hell of a lot more comfortable than the classic Stahlhelm, is no closer to bullet-proof than its cousin. With incredible luck, the bullets crack but do not penetrate the steel. They do retain enough energy to dive deep into his chest and arms without overpenetrating, proving that no matter what you do, Murphy is out to get you.

The countryside of Crete is fairly rugged, the island itself being a mountainous lump of granite that rears up out of the Med. So wherever you travel that isn't cultivated it seems that the island is crisscrossed with gullies and streams, making the use of vehicles quite difficult and crosscountry travel on foot tiring.

It is currently dusk.

Engel eyes Leopold. "Best stay in cover while you can. Trench goes north and east." He watches Goethe approach the gun, ducking a little.

Goethe takes one of the enemy grenades and pulls the pin, snapping it into the artillery piece's barrel from the loading position. "Fire in the hole, boys!" and jumps away.

Hartmann enters, blood dripping from a hand. And looking decidedly cheesed off.

Weiss ducks a bit away from the gun as Goethe works on it, grinning momentarily.

Leopold leans agaisnt the trench wall and looks over his rifle

Goethe calls out, "Looks like they ran away from the gun up the hill east, too. Hey guys, one of you swingers do the same to it?" and grins just before the explosion.

Hartmann :lolls back against the side of the trench for a moment, blood streaming into his eyes from a cut to the head, and more from shrapnel in chest and knee. "Thought you.. said the damn trench'd be better … cover."

Engel bites off a "Heh" of a half-laugh under his breath. "No 'better cover' out here, it seems. You think you can make it?"

Hartmann shrugs, immediately wincing and wishing he hadn't. "Not… dead… yet." A twisted grin. "Adolf is if I catch… him, though."

McHattie doesn't think 'at this moment' really cuts it given whats going on.

Goethe stops the bleeding, and gets a gunfull of shot in reward!

Stu sees lots of Kraut reinforcements, thinks its time to go.

Goethe rolls over, aiming that submachine gun now!

«Ground Combat» Tiernan fires his Lee Enfield SMLE at Goethe but misses!

Engel flails at the Kiwi with his knife, his arms torn up pretty badly at this point. But he still has some strength left in him.

«Ground Combat» Goethe fires his MP40 at Tiernan but misses!

«Ground Combat» Engel attacks McHattie in melee combat with his Gravity knife but misses!

Goethe fires another burst, but alas the pain affects his aim there too.

«Ground Combat» Tiernan fires his Lee Enfield SMLE at Goethe and hits!
Goethe suffers 8 wound damage to his left chest.

«Ground Combat» Goethe has been taken out!

McHattie is in a bad way. As bad as Hartmann apparently is. He slumps down, while trying to fend off Engel still. "Enough, friend!".

Goethe dies promptly, falling flat on his face collapsed on where the wounded Weiss lays flat.

Engel raises his knife again. Blood is thick on it, but as much of it's his as is McHattie. "You…surrender?" he asks in weak English. Though the sound of further rifle fire makes him look up, at firing Tiernan and Goethe. He gulps.

Goethe had his heart riddled with bullets. There is no apparent breath coming from his body.

Hartmann thinks now would be a good time to crawl away, since Tiernan might have forgotten him.

«Ground Combat» Leopold fires his Kar98k at Tiernan but misses!

McHattie nods at that, throws his rifle away, backs away from Engel, and in doing so, promptly trips over Goethes corpse and ends up in a muddy, probably tetanus filled puddle. Infantry sucks.

Tiernan kneels down and backpedals, putting some space between the Germa with the Schmeisser. It's done out of fear, but gives him room to line up his shot. "Patrick!" he yelps to McHattie. "Let's get out of here! Before more of 'em show up!"

«Ground Combat» McHattie attempts to disengage from close quarters combat with Engel, and succeeds!.

Engel is in a pretty bad way, for his part. He tries to scramble upright, away from McHattie, ready to get the hell out of there right now.

«Ground Combat» Tiernan attempts to disengage from close quarters combat with Hartmann, and does not succeed..

McHattie is, alas, cut up in the head, quite badly. He's confused, not really aware of whats going on. And all he sees aroudn him are German uniforms, so he's not too comprehending of Tiernan's suggestion.

Tiernan crouches down, grabbing McHattie by the back of his collar. He eyes the Germans, waving his rifle at them one-handed and wide-eyed as he tries to drag his comrade off.

«Ground Combat» Leopold fires his Kar98k at Tiernan and hits!
Hits hard cover.

«Ground Combat» Tiernan attempts to disengage from close quarters combat with Hartmann, and succeeds!.

Hartmann does his best to crawl away. Engel might be, Leopold apparently has other ideas.

McHattie gets grabbed by Tiernan, and stumbles away to the east, half getting up in the process. If they want this hill that bad, they can have it!

«Ground Combat» McHattie moves East <E>.

Weiss gets free from the downed Goethe, starts crawling back towards the west, trying to get his life-saver there as well.

«Ground Combat» Weiss moves West <W>.
«Ground Combat» Hartmann moves West <W>.

Engel stumbles away himself, looking down at Goethe before he goes.

Goethe has left.

«Ground Combat» Engel moves West <W>.

Leopold stops, panting, he raises his rifle and squeazes the trigger again and again

«Ground Combat» Leopold fires his Kar98k at Tiernan but misses!

Engel legs it away as fast as he can, breathing hard, as much from pain and raw animal fear as tiredness. His legs are still in good working order. It's the rest of him that's been peppered with Kiwi bullets.

Hartmann flops against the side of the trench. If that mortar starts up again, he's probably too gone to care, face a mask of blood, hand slick with it, a couple of cracked ribs and one blood-stained trouser leg.

Leopold lowers his gun and looks around frowning a little

Announcement: Afterlife shouts, "Goethe has been revived!"

«Announcement from Death!» After the rather haphazard counterattack, it all goes quiet.

«Game» It is now night time.

Leopold lets out a long sigh and leans agaisnt a nearby trench wall, looking around it as if he can't believe what he saw

«Game» Maleme is no longer a war zone!

«Ground Combat» Leopold reloads his Kar98k!

Hartmann hangs his head. "/Himmell/…." He closes his eyes. "Did we…. do it?"
Bastian arrives from the West.

Bastian bleeeeeeeedz

Weiss rolls over as he managed to crawl back this far, muttering something to himself.

Engel coughs, sagging back against the dirt, adrenaline wearing off and giving way to exhaustion and horror. "I…I don't know. Are…are we alive?"

Leopold slings his gun over his shoulder and drops to his knees in the mud to pray

Some time passes. The German position on the hill looks extremely tenuous, and you are all pretty sure that if the Kiwis came back then that'd be that, and if what Stromm says is true, that'd be that for the entire operation. However, for whatever reason, inexplicable to you own commanders, they do not come back. After a short while, and under cover of darkness, reinforcements creep up onto the darkened slopes of the hill. A squad of said reinforcements drops into this trench, led by a feld. "Gott.". He crosses himself briefly while surveying the carnage. "Spread out, I want a tripwire force east of here in case they come back. If they do come back, we're leaving! You.". He points at one of his Jagers. "Help get this squad to the rear.".

The Jager in question looks over at your sorry lot. "Who cannot walk?". he hopes its not 'everyone'.

Engel coughs again. "I…I can walk. If someone helps me up…" That seems to be the larger problem. He stares at the jagers in amazement, as if disbelieving they've really come. He'd sort of resigned himself to doing and dying at this point.

Weiss spits some blood down on the ground, "I'll have some trouble with it, at least…" he says, voice relatively clear.

Leopold stoops down to help Engel

Hartmann struggles to his feet, sways, grabs on to the edge of the trench. "It…. maybe."

Descriptions:
Leopold's Desc
Here is a tall, lightly built young man. He is in his early twenties. He has a squat nose and black hair peeps out from under his helmet. He is clean shaven. The space between his forehead and his chin is crowded; much room is taken by broad lips. His eyes sport dark brown pupils easily mistaken for bad even in good light. His frame is wiry if thin. He wears a grey uniform, upon it pinned the battalions insignia. His leggings and black boots are covered in mud. He still wears his harness even though the strings of the parachute have been cut. His helmet sports several dents but is still recognisable as a Stahelm. A utility belt hangs at his waist and he wears a mud covered back pack.

Bastian's Desc
With red hair that speaks of Nordic ancestry and stunning blue eyes this man is of good, but not perfect, Aryan ancestry. Politically attractive, he is also just this side of ruggedly handsome to those of less contrivial concerns. Age and battle have weathered his face some, though he still can't be a day over thirty if that. High cheekbones and a firm-set jaw match his strong, if lean, figure. Just shy of six feet, whatever strength of presence he has is normally only felt when speaking with him, and then the little wrinkles to either side of his mouth show for what they are: laugh lines.
Over his field-blue Luftwaffe tunic, this Fallschirmjaeger Unterscharfuhrer wears a "knochensack" (jump smock) in 3rd-pattern "tan-water" camouflage. His M-38 parachutist's helmet bears subdued German national tri-color shield decal on its right side and the Luftwaffe's eagle emblem on its left. The surface is covered in a ragged striping of brown, green, and tan; fitted fishnet covers this, a common way of attaching leaves and branches as additional camouflage. Only two stylized wings marr his sleeve, the rest of his his jump smock unadorned save one final detail: The Fallschirmspringerabzeichen (Parachute Jumper qualification Badge) marking him a member of the elite Fallschirmjaeger.
An oak- and laurel- leaf wreath surrounds a large diving eagle clutching the swastika. The Luftwaffe version also introduces laurel leaves on one side of the wreath. Oak leaves are a symbol of strength. Laurel leaves, ever since ancient Greek athletes were first crowned with them, represent victory, excellence and achievement. Thus both are fitting in a badge awarded to the elite paratroopers who qualified for it by completing no less than six parachute jumps, including one at night. He wears an enlisted ranks belt with a steel buckle. An iron cross in black is encircled by laurel leaves and the words "GOTT MIT UNS" in copper. One of the interesting things about the Fallschirmjaeger uniform was side laced jump-boots, his without hobnails that may increase grip and durability, but also the noise each step makes.

Engel's Desc
Fabian Engel is a man of about twenty-five years, a little above average height but not terribly tall, with the slim but tightly-muscled build of a natural athlete. Probably a runner or swimmer rather than a bulkier sport. He has sandy hair, golden brown bordering on blonde, and a clean-shaven face with sharp blue eyes and strong, well-defined features that most might consider handsome. His speech is marked by an Austrian accent, with a choice of words and manner to it that suggests an aristocratic background. He wears the uniform of a German Luftwaffe paratrooper with pride, even swagger, though he only ranks as quite lowly.

Weiss' Desc
Standing at five and a half feet, this young man, looking to be in his early twenties. He's rather heavily built for his height, and looks like someone that's spent his time working out regularily. He's got eyes of a greenish blue color, a nose slightly bigger than the average, and two rows of pale, thin lips that frame his well-taken care of teeth. When he speaks, it's with a Mecklenburger accent.
He's currently wearing the uniform of the German 7th Flieger Division.

Hartmann's Desc
Your typical blond Aryan male, Jurgen Hartmann is slim to the point of being wiry, and light on his feet, with clear blue eyes. He has an almost cat-like grace to his movements, quick and neat.
He's wearing the uniform of a soldier in the Luftlande Sturmregiment of the Fallschirmjaeger, comouflage smock over somewhat faded greenish/brown trousers and boots. His belt is festooned with spare magazines for the MP40 that hangs from its strap at his shoulder, and his head protected with a standard issue helmet.

Goethe's Desc
This soldier wears the field blue uniform of the German Luftwaffe, with brown leather belts and straps. A young man, likely still in his teens, his rank of jager is indicated on the shoulder strap. Upon his head rests the new modified pattern steel Stahlhelm of the fallschirm, a helmet without a visor customized for the paratroopers, and over his body he wears a grey paratrooper jumpsuit. His legs are covered in blue uniform breeches, and a pair of brown shoes is donned over his feet.
