Achtung Spitfire

August 1940

"We shall show mercy - but we shall not ask for it."
- Winston Churchill

Hussar is standing near the Whirlwind, stretching his arms with what looks like great enjoyment; probably happy to have the use of his limbs back, after so long. He shoots a curious look at Byrd, calling out, "What are you looking for?"

Byrd had bent himself over limberly to peer at the backside of the Hurricane, so he has to straighten up from that to answer to Hussar. He grins. "Just giving the birds a look-see. Used to work on them back in New Zealand, rather than fly them." He winces. "I think the mechanics here have things a bit tougher. Amazing, ain't it? What something as small as a bit of artillery can do to a fine machine like this?" He gives the Hurricane a pat, rather sympathetically. "Poor gal."

Blunt walks out of his office, and looks around the green field, and specifically the somewhat thinned out ranks of the Hurricanes. Which are indeed looking beat up. "Not bad aircraft." he muses, aloud.
"You give the birds with the skirts a looksee, no? The plane is just metal, my friend." Hussar shoots Byrd a jaunty smile. He blinks as he realizes the CO is on the airfield, snapping to attention and calling out, "Atten-shun!" It sounds a bit silly, there on the open field.

From behind one of the Hurricanes there's a few moments of rather angry cursing, before Murray gets up from there, moving to attention as soon as he gets to his feet.

Byrd winks at Hussar, chuckling at his comment and wandering over toward the Whirlwind. "Maybe. Still, I'd rather take out a girl who was in top-form than one who had a back-side full of load." He seems about to ramble more in this vein but snaps up straighter when Hussar yells. He even salutes Blunt and manages a barked, "Sir!"

Blunt blinks at the formalities. "At ease, men. We're not in the army - or the Luftwaffe. No need to be so formal by the aircraft. Unless I'm shouting at someone, of course." he says, without a hint of irony. "Got a somewhat different job for you, we're getting some replacement aircraft, which means we need someone to fly them in.".

Hussar eyes Byrd from the corners of his eyes. He relaxes a little at Blunt's words - which is to say, not much. His brows draw down at the mention of replacement aircraft, "Replacements, sir?" He looks hopeful. It Can Only Get Better.

Byrd's eyes like up like a kid who's been presented with a shiny new Christmas package. He's always eager to fly, and this is even better than going up in Ye Olde Hurricane. "Righto, sir. What've they sent us?"

Murray blinks a bit as he hears about the replacement aircraft. "What kind of repl…" He trails off as the others are asking the question, watching the CO rather carefully for now.

Blunt smiles faintly at the enthusiasm of at least one. "Spitfires. We're going to be a mixed squadron. A bit unusual but as this is a single squadron airfield we do tend to operate on smaller scale from the sector airfields.". A pause. "Its going to mean a couple of hours on a bus to Biggin Hill, though. And then flying back.".

Hussar tries to stifle his grin, murmuring evenly, "I doubt that will be a problem, sir." Spitfires! This is what he joined the RAF for.

Byrd right beams at that, practically radiating glee. Spits! "Can't say I'd mind a bus ride, sir," he replies, managing to repress the urge to jump up and down.
"I'm sure the bus ride will be no problem for anyone, sir," Murray offers, unable to hold back a small grin as he sees Byrd's expression.

Blunt smirks. "I didnt' think so. 9 o'clock, so you got an hour to get ready. You'll be leaving Biggin Hill around midday hopefully. I imagine the flight won't take so long. The bus is already arranged.".

(* A quick bus ride later… *)

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar cruises along at 70 per cent power.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd cruises as well, getting a feel for the aircraft. Despite his boyish eagerness on the ground he's tentative with the machine at first, going slow to see how she flies. He sticks close to Hussar.

From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar rises up, falling behind the two other spitfires as he loses some speed.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd raises his pitch angle, taking her up, up, up into the wild blue yonder.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar naturally has his engines at full power as he rises, only cutting back as he takes a more shallow pitch.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray climbs a bit as well, testing how the aircraft handles, now. Adding the engine power to it.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd gradually increases his engine power, a grin spreading over his face as his Spit gains altitude.

«Radio» Cowslip radios on 999 : 79? We got a slight change of plan. Head for RAF Lympne, and then orbit and wait.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar frowns at the radio message, revving his engine to full power as he heads that way.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd levels off when he reaches 15,000. He's also surprised by the radio message, fiddling with the controls to set his bearing toward Lympne.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray levels out now, and eases up the power a little bit. Looking around outside the cockpit, before he heads off with the others.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar calls out, "Full power, lads."

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd grins, revving his engine up as far as she'll go. "Roger, Hussar. Just getting her warmed up." He has the manners to at least put his radio down before letting out a thrilled, "Woooooo!" She goes fast.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar does a circle in the air, just for kicks. "She sure does turn fast."

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray nods a little bit as he gets to full speed. "Full power," he confirms, before he starts rolling over a little in the air, to test how the bird handles. "Quite nice."

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd laughs as he watches Hussar and Murray turn in the air. He does a wheel about himself, not to be outdone. "I always did like fast girls," he says, still grinning as he sets his course right again.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar shakes his head at Byrd's voice on the radio, keeping his course for Lympne.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray grins a bit as he hears Byrd's words, "So I've heard," he remarks rather lightly.

«Radio» Cowslip radios on 999 : 102 Squadron at Lympne are refuelling on the ground, and a Luftwaffe fighter-bomber patrol is nearby. They may well be targeting the airfield. Will keep you updated.

«Radio» Hussar radios on 999 : Roger that

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd chuckles, settling back to just enjoy the ride. He gets a bit more serious as the radio message mentions Luftwaffe. The prospect of getting shot down in your new toy makes playing with it rather different.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar starts climbing slowly for altitude again, apparently thinking that the Bf110s are going to be flying high.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd angles up a notch as he hits within 10 miles of Lympne. In case Hussar's on to something about going higher.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar slows down as the plane approaches Lympne, apparently not eager to do much orbiting.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray does a bit of a climb again as well, looking around carefully.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd slows as well. He's in no hurry to get there before his fellows.

«Radio» Hussar radios on 999 : Approaching Lympne. Got radar contact on the enemy?

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray looks around as he reaches Lympne, frowning a bit as he looks in all directions.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd tries to sharpen his eyes as they close in on Lympne, searching for Luftwaffe behind every cloud, as it were.

«Radio» Cowslip radios on 999 : 10 miles south of Lympne, headed west. As you must be getting low on fuel, vector 195, buster.

«Radio» Hussar radios on 999 : Copy that, setting a heading for 195 and **** up.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar revs his engine to full strength, setting a heading for the enemy.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar zooms south-southwest, his plane moving fast.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd rogers that, swiveling his controls about after the info from the radio message.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray follows with the others, looking around to see where the enemies might be.

«Radio» Cowslip radios on 999 : Your intercept has changed course. Now headed for Rye Chain Home. Vector 220, range 18000 yards.

«Radio» Hussar radios on 999 : Roger that, *** 220.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar changes course, the Spitfire shifting heading effortlessly.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd adjusts his heading to change course as well, that grin creeping onto his face again. "She handles right nice, don't she?" he mutters to himself.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar calls out, "Bogey spotted!"

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray turns the Spitfire as well, following the others carefully.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar flies towards one of the planes, "I'm marking that one!" He points to a dark shape on the horizon (#1812)! Mark different targets."

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner is blissfully unaware.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray nods a bit to himself as he follows the others.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar loses sight of the enemy aircraft again, squinting furiously at the horizon.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd sets his pitch down when he sees Hussar starting to fly lower. He scans the sky, in search of Germans, but he can't see the blighters yet. Nevertheless, he tries to keep up with Hussar.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar curses, "Those things are flying fast. It's going to take us a while to intercept."

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray frowns as he looks around again, dipping down a little, before he mutters something to himself.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd nods, tracking Hussar far more than he's tracking enemy aircraft for now. "Roger. Got eyes like a falcon, don't you, mate? Well, keep them sighted. I'd like to see these birds for myself."

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray nods. "Amen," he replies to Byrd's words.

«Radio» Cowslip radios on 999 : Vector 260, 79. Range 9000 yards.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar squints hard at the horizon, "8000 yards and closing."

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd squints as he changes his heading, blinking. He curses. Bloody sun.

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner is coming up on the target. Excellent.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray frowns, "Should have brought the sunglasses," he mutters.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar loses sight of the enemy plane… Again! Flying into the sun is making spotting the enemy planes almost impossible.

(From (#1785) Spitfire Mk1A) Murray mutters under his breath as he looks around. "Now where are those…?"

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar curses, "It's no use! The blighters are right in front of us, but I can't bloody well see them."

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar slows down, apparently unwilling to overshoot the enemy planes,

[Squadchatter] «Radio» Hussar radios on 999 : Can I get a *** They're right in the sun, no visual.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd flows as well, blinking painfully in the wash of sunlight. He keeps his ears tuned to the radio, worse than blind without its guidance.

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner drops bombs, and misses by a mile. And a half.

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner is clearly over Rye though, or thereabouts.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar heads to the north of Rye Channel, apparently trying to get out of the sun.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd heads toward Rye as well, still blinking to try and clear the haze from his eyes.

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner lurches forward, the Bf110 free of the weight of the bombs, which have done little more than terrify the cows. And then the 110s swing around ponderously, heading for home.

(From (#1811) Spitfire Mk1A) Hussar heads towards Baumgartner's plane.

(From (#1813) Bf110) Baumgartner sees one! "Achtung, Spitfire!"

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd sees one now, his eyes starting to clear. He frowns, setting his fingers to attempt some damage. Though at 6 miles out, he'll have to wait awhile yet.

«Radio» Byrd radios on 999 : I've got visual on three bogeys. Closest is **** 8,000 yards out.

(From (#1812) Bf110) Lorenz is in a turning fight again, but theres not much chance of winning. In fact the Spit is glued to his tail. Giving the tailgunner some practice.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd takes a hit to the engine. He bites off a curse. Well, undamaged was nice while it lasted.

(From (#1812) Bf110) Lorenz goes into another long, shallow dive, after seeing smoke coming off the Spitfires fuselage. Maybe it'll be slowed down just enough… and the 110 is fairly roaring along.

(From (#1805) Spitfire Mk1A) Byrd keeps after the 110 perhaps longer than is wise but it's soon clear the bomber is outrunning him. He curses, radioing home.

(From Spitfire Mk1A #1785) Murray is working on getting towards home, frowning a bit as it seems to go rather slow.

(From Spitfire Mk1A #1811) Hussar zooms towards the airfield, wagging his wings and waving, hyped about his first victories.

«Radio» Byrd radios on 999 : Looks like the bomber's running home, ** I'll do the *** Headed back.

(* Back at the airfield *)

Byrd comes in for a landing, none the worse for ware, though he looks a little disappointed. Though certainly not with his plane. He looks the Spit over after he's hopped out of it, wincing almost apologetically. Coulda been worse, at least.

Hussar clambers out of the plane, pointing at the MG holes in the engine cover and shouting to the mechanics gathering out the planes, "It's just a scratch! Two of the jerries got worse." As he hits the tarmac, he suddenly stops there, near the plane. Wait. He just killed two men. And just like that, whether it's from spent adrenaline or air sickness or guilt or what, he bends over, throwing up near the wheels of his plane.

Byrd looks up and over at Hussar as the man climbs out, watching the Pole with open admiration. He half starts to jog over and congratulate him. Though he pauses when the man vomiting. He'll leave him to that.

Murray has managed to limp back home, and landed, and now climbs out of the plane, frowning a bit as he turns to look at the aircraft. "Looks like I took a few hits," he mutters.
