Belleau Wood Part 7

On the 13th June the Germans counterattacked. An attack by three divisions with plenty of artillery support strikes Bouresches and almost recaptures the town. A planned relief by reinforcements from Lucy-le-Bocage is disrupted by gas and shelling on the interconnecting road, and the brigade suffers heavy casualties before even reaching the battle. Gunnery Sergeant Stockham is awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for placing his gas mask on a wounded Marine while assisting others on the road.

Despite massive commitment of troops, the Germans are unable to recapture the town. Meanwhile in the woods themselves the Germans counterattack there as well, and succeed in pushing the Marines back a little, but both sides again suffer extremely heavy casualties.
